There are no complete records of all behinds scorers from the beginning of the VFL/AFL.

Fitzroy had 15 in R5 1993; they're the only other team to do it since 1984. Paul may be able to give an answer back to the early 70's.

on this when was the last game played where no one from either team kicked 2 goals...

Port v Richmond, R11 1999.

If anyone could supply a list of players kicking 5 or more goals on debut, and also of anyone getting 3 Brownlow votes on debut I'd be most grateful.

Thank you very much indeed Ron. Terrific stuff! Certainly John Coleman in particular had to be rather unlucky to have missed out on the 3 votes back in 1949!!

Sorry, should've clarified that round-by-round Brownlow votes only extend back to 1984. Prior to that there was no indication of which match the votes were awarded for (apart from some years in the 1930's, for which I can't find records).

have never understood how that happened.

even in those days you would've thought someone recorded the game by game brownlow votes. i really find it amazing.

also i can't believe no one thought there was some sort of lack of transperency.

There was far less pomp and ceremony surrounding the Brownlow back then. Certainly no formal presentation. Even in the 1960's, some winners heard the result on the radio news.

When they began televising the count in the 1970's, all the 1's were grouped together and counted first (though the counting of the 1's usually took place in the background while season highlights were shown), followed by the 2's and 3's. Lots of controversy ensued about the VFL stage-managing the finish to make it more exciting. Then in 1981 the announcement at the beginning of the count that, in the event of a tie, no countback would take place and, for the first time, each player would receive a medal. Voila, three-way tie. Not to mention the sensational betting plunges on Blight, Couch etc.

That page is a wonderful supply of very interesting stats.

Chris Newman who has played 192 games for 61 wins, 4 draws and 127 losses, has a career win percentage of 32.81%. If he and the Tigers fail to win more than three of the next 8 games he plays in, what would his record stand as a 200-game player in terms of wins/losses? Would he be the only member of the 200-club to have played in less than 1/3 of his games as wins?

When was the last time a team winning only 1 match in the first 8 ROUNDS (not matches) came home with a bunch of wins and played finals.

Ie, St Kilda this year.

Please note, I am well aware that St Kilda this year, and Hawthorn last year, won only 1/7 matches to start the year, and both won their 8th match. However, due to the bye St Kilda's 2nd win was not recorded until Round 9.

Fitzroy (1-7 and last in 1984) is the only occurrence.

Thanks Ron, so that would actually be the worst start to a team eventually playing finals, and presumably Saints this year would be 3rd or 4th, or 5th.

After 7 matches the next after Fitzroy 1984 is:

Hawthorn 1996 1-5-1 70.32%

(Percentage 15% lower than St Kilda after 7 matches in 2011.)

14 teams have been 2-5-0 and made the finals.

3 teams have been 2-6-0 and made the finals.
