Was trying to work this out by hand, but figured some of the database crew here might be faster at it:

How many of each type of draft pick (ND, PS, R) have the various clubs used in the last ten drafts (2002 - 2011)?

Whilst my database is currently "under construction", I think I've got this one down at this stage.

Total Selections (2,172): Pre-season (93), National (1,263), Rookie (816).....Not Utilized (211)

A - 125: 4, 73, 48...8
B - 152: 2, 76, 74...24
CA - 142: 7, 84, 51...8
CO - 120: 5, 72, 43...3
E - 122: 9, 69, 44...7
F - 125: 6, 78, 41...8
G - 98: 3, 58, 37...2
GC - 77: 2, 53, 22...10
GWS - 76: 6, 57, 13...18
H - 122: 4, 68, 50...5
K - 121: 4, 76, 41...8
M - 111: 6, 63, 42...7
PA - 125: 8, 70, 47...12
R - 144: 12, 83, 49...25
ST - 141: 5, 86, 50...25
SY - 152: 3, 72, 77...24
WC - 101: 3, 56, 42...0
WB - 118: 4, 69, 45...17

This includes selections that were "not utilized", will see how much of an impact that has.

i have tried looking for these stats but have had no luck.

I want to know who leads all the major stats groups (kicks, HBs, goals, marks etc) for the pre season competition over the years.

eg Robert Harvey has had 432 kicks in his 41 preseason games over his preseason career

The availability of pre-season stats is a fairly recent development. I doubt they'd even have been recorded for the entirety of Harvey's career.

How many home and away games have there been in VFL/AFL history in which both teams finished with the same amount of goals?

In other words, what percentage of drawn games would we have had we stayed with the original VFA format of only counting goals scored to determine the winners and losers?

919 times matches have had equal goals. 66 of which were draws. 83 draws have had uneven goal tallies.

So, 919 draws instead of 149 if behinds were not worth 1 point.
6.58% of matches instead of 1.07%.

7.64% of West Coast's matches would have been draws - 5.24% of Brisbane's - the highest and lowest percentage of even goal scores of current teams.

Carlton would have 165 draws (the most), 84 fewer wins and 66 fewer losses.

50 times finals would have been drawn compared to 8 with behinds scoring as 1 point.

I'm not sure on your figures. According to footywire Essendon has used 47 ND picks since 2002 (inclusive), and 41 rookie picks.

Richmond has used 53, and 34 rookie picks.

Even with your 'not used' numbers these don't add up.

There will be discrepancies on how different people group selections.

For instance, Stewart Crameri went pick 75 in the 2011 National Draft (as a Rookie Elevation).

These elevations have been incorporated in the ND since 2008.

Sure, but there's a huge difference between 53 and 34 & 83 and 49. Where did those extra 45 picks come from? Richmond only has 25 unsued picks, so the other 20 were rookie elevations?

Is Tom Kavanagh (Melbourne, son of Brent Crosswell) the only father/son playerever to not have his father's surname?

Yes - in the post-1986 National Draft era.

There was talk around 2.5 years ago that a club was going to chase a father-son selection that was rather "sensitive", the father/player from a generation ago had sired a child that had gone on and been raised by another bloke. Club had to toss up turning the kid's world upside-down vs letting him go.

Lad fell off the radar anyway.

Can't beat that, but Ivan Bartul was on Melbourne's list from '93 to '96 without playing a game. I always thought he never came over from WA at all but he does appear in the 1994 team photo (and his spectacular pose doesn't seem to be a mid 90's Photoshop job http://demonwiki.org/Ivan+Bartul) so who knows what he was up to.

Paddy Steinfort (Rich 1997-2001) could give David Ugrinic a run for his money.

A question out of left field, has there been a case where a player was born on the same day another player made his debut?

I have 2921 such instances in my database! Most recent is 9/8/1992 - Adam Kerinaiua debuted for Brisbane and Alex Browne (2 games last year for Essendon) was born. Earliest is 15/5/1897 - future Richmond player Harry Pollock was born on the day that 25 players made their VFL debuts.

A few noteworthy current ones:
13/6/92 - Anthony Koutoufides debuted, Jack Darling born
1/4/91 - Gavin Wanganeen debuted, Jasper Pittard born
18/4/87 - John Worsfold debuted, Brett Deledio born
28/5/83 - Chris Langford debuted, Ben Rutten born

What about two such players playing in the same game?

Now that's rare. Has never happened as far as I can tell.
I was looking for Dustin Fletcher's birthdate amongst current players, he certainly debuted before some current AFL-listed players were born.

What about those who have played an AFL match in the same year?

What about those who have played an AFL match in the same year?

I've got 309 cases of players born after another player in the same match debuted, most recently the 20/9/08 Preliminary Final when Cyril Rioli (b.14/7/89) played against Robert Harvey (debuted 6/8/88).

For the record, the older players involved in these are

75 times - Kevin Murray
55 - Ted Whitten snr
46 - Vic Cumberland
45 - Robert Harvey
27 - Michael Tuck
21 - Paul Salmon
12 - Syd Barker snr
5 - Roger Merrett, Alby Morrison
3 - Tony Lockett, Kevin Bartlett, Jim Jackson, Bill Mahoney
2 - Dick Reynolds
1 - Simon Madden, John Nicholls, Jack Dyer snr, Dave McNamara

The most involvements by young players are Peter Welsh (the Footscray player, not Hawthorn/Richmond) and Chris Smith (Fitzroy), 21 times each. These are all related to playing alongside Whitten and Murray.

There have been 83 players drafted with a DOB later than Fletcher's debut game (R2 1993, 3/4/93).

Essendon has drafted Hunter, O'Brien, Dalgleish and Kavanagh.

Given that they are expected to debut this year, Dustin Fletcher would've played seventeen matches and won a flag before the likes of Buntine, Yagmoor, Sexton, Cunningham and Coniglio were even born.
