The 70s were a strange era for Brownlows - well, every era has it's foibles, I guess. But in the 70's we had 5 ruckmen win the Brownlow - Thomson, Gary Dempsey, Moss, Teasdale and Moore. Gary Dempsey polled in the Top 10 every year in the 70s. Some years had 3 ruckmen in the Top 10. Since then,
Barry Round in 81, Peter Moore in 84, Stynes in 91 and Wynd in 92. Then none. In the last 10 years, there have been a total of 2 ruckmen finish anywhere in the top 10 - Sandilands and Goldstein - once each and neither really got close.

Adam Goodes was AA Ruck in 2003 when he won the Brownlow.

I haven't look so excuse me if it has already been asked...

Which player has played in the most losing grand final teams?

Although 5 were losing and one a draw.
1977 in two grand finals.
then 1979, 1980 and 81 and finally 1983 with another club at Essendon.

Thanks! :thumbsu:

I was worried McVeigh might be on the leaderboard with his 3 losses.

Great list. Surprised how many others played in similar amount to Kink.
Kink only one in my lifetime. Curious if any of the others were same as Kink as never getting to experience playing in a winning grand final. I suspect they all tasted some success back in 40's, 30's or 20's ?

All of them got to play in at least one winning grand final side (except the unfortunate Kink). Several of them did exceptionally well, and there's obviously some of the game's legends on the list.

Wins Name Club Year(s)
2 Jack Titus Richmond (1932, 1934)
5 Gordon Coventry Collingwood (1927-1930, 1935)
2 Tom O'Halloran Richmond (1932, 1934)
1 Jack Bisset Richmond/South Melbourne (1933)
2 Jack Dyer (snr.) Richmond (1934, 1943)
4 Dick Reynolds Essendon (1942, 1946, 1949-1950)
4 Bill Hutchison Essendon (1942, 1946, 1949-1950)
0 Rene Kink Collingwood/Essendon

Richmond lost 5 Grand finals between 27-33 Which accounts for most of Ohallaran and Titus' Grand finals. Another 3 Grand Finals losses between 40 and 44 accounts for Titus' last and the rest of Dyer's.

Actually feel sorry for Kink.
1983 or 1980 tasting some joy I would have allowed if I was God.

Nice of you to offer up those couple of years! Not 1979 or 1981??!!

Rubbing salt into the wound Kink was still at Essendon in 1984 (missed the year through injury) and 1985 (played 11), when he might have finally been a premiership player.

Wow, the 1984 and 85 cruelty I forgot about.

As for 79 and 81 ,dream on. My sense of pity and charity only goes so far.:p

With Adelaide (Toyota) and Richmond (Jeep) in a Grand Final, which was the last GF to feature main sponsors from the same industry?
Which Guernsey did west coast play in in 2005-06?

I think hungry hacks was their main sponsor on one Guernsey, but sgio in the other
If the sgio one, the answer would be that as both had insurance sponsors.

If not, 2004? Port (vodaphone) vs Brisbane (aapt) - both telecommunications

IIRC it was Hungry Jacks for 2006 but not sure about 2005.

Weird question. ha ha.
How did that even pop into your head to ask ?
Got no idea but when we played North in 99 grand final sense North had Mazda as some type of sponsor around then and we had Hyundai for sometime so closest I can think of.

Two posts before your question is a discussion that includes West Coast and Sydney playing in the Grand Final against each other two years in a row.

It happens all the time. Again, unless I’m missing something.

Oh, I see what you mean. Yeah, I not even read that. My post was independent from that stream of thought.
So can see what context you were thinking.

What I was getting at, is I just caught the end of radio discussion and thought I heard they say last time the same clubs played in final series was 1972 and 73. If I heard right, I thought wow and how rare that all the same teams make a final series two times in a row. I checked up and saw that indeed 72 and 73 had all the same clubs in both finals series. Had not checked beyond that glance so I just posted a question to see if anyone can remember it happening before.

They were also saying this first season that all players in grand final are playing their first grand final ever.
Not happened since 1897.

So you mean the entirety of the top 8 (or whatever number it has been during the past) was the exact same two years in a row?

If so, now that’s a fantastic question!

Yep, that was my question and naturally as finals series has grown to 4 club series, to 5 club series , to 6 club series and now final 8, it gets even more unlikely for two years in a row not have the some changes in clubs involved.
