One of the toughest questions ever asked for which the data clearly exists, and really taxed the CPU!

The answer is 20 matches for St. Kilda. Their R3 1922 team contained no players from their R16 1920 side.

Record in the modern era is 59 matches for Sydney, R9 1990 to R3 1993.

Record for one coach is 42 matches for Gerald Brosnan at University, R18 1911 to R6 1914.

Modern record for one coach is 119 matches for Kevin Sheedy at Essendon, R21 1987 to R1 1993.

Jeff Hogg, who played at Richmond from 1986-1993 and Fitzroy from 1994-1996 had one of the longest careers on record without a finals appearance, and ended his career with 33 straight losses for the Lions. After playing in Fitzroy's upset win over Hawthorn in Round 12 1994, Hogg's remaining 9 matches that season were all losses, as were his 10 games in 1995 and all 14 games in 1996. There were only four wins for Fitzroy in this period against Sydney, St. Kilda, Adelaide and Fremantle, but Hogg was not in any of these victorious Lion teams.

I'm sure there must have been players for very poor teams before World War 2 (St. Kilda, University, North Melbourne & Hawthorn) who finished their careers on longer losing streaks than Jeff Hogg, but have there been any post WW2 players to come close to or exceed Hogg's losing streak to end their playing days?

Technically yeah, as he didn't retire until October. But his last game was in May, and Fletcher was the oldest player on match day for the season.

I don't have a list of retirement dates for players who may have toiled on for a year or two in the Reserves or attempted to return from injury after playing their last senior match.

Similar thing in 1987 with Schimmelbusch and Tuck. Schimma is older but retired midyear and Tuck surpassed him later in the year as the oldest on match day.

Thanks Ron The Bear, I knew Jeff Hogg's record must have been close to the record and was only eclipsed by one, fellow Fitzroy player Graham Campbell 30 years earlier. I didn't realize that Hogg's teammate Simon Atkins also finished his career on 33 straight losses, but he missed the Lions' last ever victory over Fremantle in Round 8 1996. Interestingly, at the start of his Fitzroy stint Jeff Hogg had a 4-3 win/loss record after 7 games for the Lions, playing in 4 of their wins early in the 1994 season and missing a number of games that they lost through injury, but it was all downhill from there.

There are some other interesting cases on this list. Wayne Lamb started his career with a draw in 1992, but that was the closest he ever came to a victory in his career. Ruckman Brad Tunbridge was a shining light in some very ordinary Swans' teams in the early 1990s, but his career just seemed to mysteriously end, and he never played another senior match after his 50th game in the nightmare 162-point thrashing from the Brisbane Bears at the GABBA. Barry Griffiths (Hawthorn), Mal Owens (Melbourne) and Russell McHenry (Swans) failed to win at all in their careers.

Richmond made the GF under Schmidt. Jack Dyer had a lot to say about his predecessor (Checker Hughes) but practically nothing on Schmidt. The club felt they should've won the flag in 1933 and gave the job to captain Bentley. According to Jim Main's Encyclopedia of AFL Coaches, Schmidt the player was "a perfectionist whose hectoring annoyed teammates".

Just to clarify... I mean contested marks for the attacking team. I feel like there are fewer and fewer each year... want to see what the stats say.
