What are some of the longest game streaks in between two teams playing finals? For example, from 1945 to 2007 Collingwood and South/Sydney played 105 matches against each other in between meeting in another final. I'm sure there would be longer streaks than this.

Numbers include the previous finals meeting and the next finals meeting. I have included two unbroken streaks including Fitzroy which will of course remain in perpetuity.

Games | Teams | Span
\143|Fitzroy vs St. Kilda|1913-1996
\131|Melbourne vs Richmond|1940-2018
\123|Fitzroy vs Geelong|1923-1996
\119|Geelong vs South Melbourne|1934-2005
\108|Essendon vs Footscray|1953-2018
\106|Fitzroy vs South Melbourne|1924-1986
\105|Fitzroy vs Melbourne|1900-1960
\105|Collingwood vs South Melbourne|1945-2007

I know this would have been asked before, but what is the largest combined losing margin for a team who has gone out in straight sets?

Not sure but one contender is North of 1983.
Semi Final
Hawthorn 0.2 6.6 9.8 13.10 88 Sat 10-Sep-1983 2:30 PM Att: 41,063 Venue: Waverley Park
North Melbourne 2.4 3.6 5.9 6.12 48 Hawthorn won by 40 pts

Preliminary Final
Essendon 8.2 12.5 17.10 25.14 164 Sat 17-Sep-1983 2:30 PM Att: 63,785 Venue: Waverley Park
North Melbourne 2.1 9.2 10.3 12.6 78 Essendon won by 86 pts

126 points combined will certainly be topped if look further.
I still remember they even lost a game during the season by 150 points when they were on top of ladder. Was a weird season, that one.

Ok, this would be hard to top...
1987 Swans....
Finals
Qualifying Final

Hawthorn 5.7 9.10 16.13 23.18 156 Sat 05-Sep-1987 2:30 PM Att: 47,752 Venue: Waverley Park
Sydney 2.4 5.7 7.9 8.9 57 Hawthorn won by 99 pts
Semi Final

Melbourne 2.4 10.13 17.18 21.23 149 Sun 13-Sep-1987 2:30 PM Att: 80,292 Venue: M.C.G.
Sydney 3.3 6.6 8.12 10.13 73 Melbourne won by 76 pts

Combined total of 175 points, out in straight sets.
Previous season they also went out in straight sets in narrow losses.
The Edelsten Era....

Cats straight exit in 1934 must have been huge at time considering scoring then nothing like it was 50 years later when North and Swans went out in straights sets in big ways.
1934 Finals

Semi Final
Richmond 3.5 5.10 11.15 19.20 134 Sat 29-Sep-1934 2:30 PM Att: 35,934 Venue: M.C.G.
Geelong 1.4 5.4 6.6 7.8 50 Richmond won by 84 pts
Preliminary Final

South Melbourne 4.2 6.6 10.9 15.18 108 Sat 06-Oct-1934 2:30 PM Att: 30,400 Venue: M.C.G.
Geelong 2.2 4.4 5.5 7.6 48 South Melbourne won by 60 pts

144 points combined huge back then.
But 1987 Swans has biggest combined losses for straight sets exists.

I've not looked back in challenge system times where minor premier could challenge after semi-final loss but there won't be anything like these combined losses from 1934, 1983 and 1987.

I'd be interested to know how many best 22 players and for how many games each club has lost through injury and suspension this year. It seems like Collingwood has had a wretched run of injuries to best 22 players. North has generally only had a few players out, but they've been good players and for long periods.

I appreciate best 22 is a matter of judgement, but injuries to players ranked 25-40+ is less relevant.

Anyone have a source?

ha ha. Talk about blocking bad experiences from your memory. Completely overlooked that one.

Speaking of straight sets, Richmond VFL just did that today.

Finished 1st then lost to Williamstown (4th) and Essendon (8th).

But the combined losing margin wouldn't bruise a grape.

The Sydney Swans' inglorious elimination from the 2018 finals series at the hands of the GWS Giants with a 49-point hiding at the SCG was another example of the Swans losing at their home ground this year where they were previously very hard to beat. Sydney had a number of losses at home this year, including dropping a game to easybeats the Gold Coast Suns, yet obviously still made the finals.

Does anyone know any other cases of teams that made the finals or were mid-ladder teams that struggled on their home ground? I remember in the late 1990s Geelong developed a bit of a hoodoo at Kardinia Park and lost quite a few matches there that on paper the Cats should have won, but there must be other examples.

In 1993 there were only 20 games for home and away series. So 10 designated home games and 10 away games. We only won half our home games that year. Two of those home wins were a 1 point win over Swans in final round and a 2 point win over Hawks in round two. So could have easily been less than 50% designated home games if things went a little more other way in those two games. Made the grand final despite that relatively poor home record. Only lost 1 away game.
1993 Carlton

Away 8-1-1

Thanks mate for this. Really helpful.

Does anyone know where individual game hitouts to advantage stats can be found?

The last three games at the MCG have had over 90,000, is this a new record?

All five MCG finals in 1972 drew above 90K.

Four in a row happened every finals series from 1966-71.

Three in a row happened in 1956, 1965, and 2017 PF/GF/2018 R1.

Should get 90K next week if Collingwood wins today.
