We're having a little chat on the Melbourne board about trade targets specifically mids

We figure we would have picks 2-5 maybe a pp 10-12 and a second rounder 20-22

Obviously the first pick is off the table but would you guys look at pick 20-22 for someone like steel sidebottom?
Maybe even pick 11 and you send us back your second rounder

Pick 11 + Jack Watts for Sidebottom & Pick 24 ?

Well at his best he is a gun an that's why we would be happy to give up pick 11 for him

I don't know what value you hold on your other mids but what about if we put 11 on the table for daisy so you wouldn't have to worry about free agency , not that I think that's a chance anyway

Considering he was drafted at pick 11, in the top 3 or 4 players in over both 2010 grandfinals (you could argue he should have been given the norm smith). Also coming 3rd in the coaches votes for collingwood this year. I imagine pick 11 wouldn't be enough. For half a year last year atleast he was in all australian form. Allot of people in the forum probably discount him because he isn't an in and under player who goes and gets the footy. Is an outside player who uses the ball well (probably a bit out of form over last mo0nth).

I would imagine Pick 11 and a player capable of going straight into our best 18. he is still only 22 and the best footy is ahead of him

Why are people being plebs? He's come on our board and asked a question about a possible trade, and if you don't think that it'll happen just tell him that, not scream and insult his club.

I would only trade Steele away for Jack Watts + a good first rounder, and even then I would be hesitant.

The fact he said a first round is obviously off the table didn't sit well with me.

Or Sidebottom for pick 11 (which we got him for) and we give them a second rounder aswell ... whatever it was.

Didn't read that bit about the first round being off limits, but even so we shouldn't act like that.

Steele Sidebottom's form over the past 18 months has been woeful.

Truth be told, he deserves to be dropped after a pathetic first half effort last week against Port.

For me, has until the end of this season to prove his worth as a required player. Forget the talk of his 2010 form because that is as relevant as the current 2013 shape of our list and position on the ladder.

If any club offered a first rounder we should seriously look at it. If we were offered anything in the top 7 or so, I'd personally pack his bags and drive him to his new club.

Not saying that sidebottom definently isn't worth it just that I couldn't see us passing up on a young midfielder we so desperately need , it would have to be a Pendlebury type player to get that pick and that's not realistic

You would think a top 10 pick minimum for Sidey, maybe even a bit of a sweeter as well. Has been struggling for form in recent weeks but he had an amazing start to the season, already has the runs on the board, and is still young (21 or 22?). Pie's would be crazy to give him up tho.
If the Dee's are looking for mature midfield talent then best look elsewhere, pies mid's are either stars and would cost too much or are battlers who would probably struggle in the weak melbourne midfield. I would think The Dee's would be better off looking at Carltons list, they are suppose to have a pletha of good mids right? Could try and bring Mclean back home?

Sidebottom's age and profile mean that we would not be interesting in trading unless it were for a top 10 pick at the least. As has already been said he's a healthy 22, is about our best finals player, is our best endurance athlete and is a goalkicking midfielder. The fact that he's played second fiddle to Swan, Pendlebury, Beams and Thomas for most of his career means he has been underrated by the public but I doubt this would be the case at Collingwood or any of the other AFL clubs. He'd walk into Melbourne and be your second best midfielder straight away imo.

tbh I would only really consider Sidebottom leaving if he were packaged in a trade to get no 1/ Boyd. Other than that I think his age and potential make him to important to the future of our club to just trade away.

To get Pendlebury you would have to give up 2 picks in the top 8 (3+8) and one in early 20s for us to even consider it.

Obviously Sidebottom for pick 11 wont work, you need to make a deal using pick 2 (as long as we get Boyd with that) for Steele + a fringe player/2nd rounder

I would happily trade Sidebottom for a late 1st rounder or and early 2nd rounder. I would also love to get Watts from Melbourne I think the bloke is finally get there and with more supply would be a decent forward for us if we can't get a deal to get Boyd.

I'd like to see side bottom play as a traditional centreman. I feel that that could be his spot- drifting forward kicking goals and hitting targets on a lead. His foot skills are much better when on the run in space as opposed to when he is kicking over a mark or going sideways

plus he is our best gut running midfielder, how often do u see sidebottom in the last line of defence only to see him in the forward line moments later. people need to chill out about his current form, our mids are so depleted at the moment and his workrate is always elite. watch his form increase when he gets better players around him like beams and thomas. we basically missing 2 jets in the mids and its been hurting us all year.

Sidebottom we would wnat your 1st pick so it would be pick 2-5 we would probably have to throw our 1st pick in aswell

His a gun his only 23 and you guys would just stuff your 1st pick up anyway

This is a trade that would never happen and yet has alot of merret for both sides

I can see it happening. Both clubs are taking a risk, Melbourne a little more so but they need to be brave if they are going to be a little more competitive next year.
Whilst Sidebottom's form has been down last couple of seasons, we all know that he is capable of reaching the elite status. Would you believe that he was way ahead of Beams in 2010.

Pick 11 + Jack Watts for Sidebottom & Pick 24 - Take it :)

I dont think Sidebottoms form has been down over the last couple of seasons. His first half of 2012 he was in all australian form, which dropped off (perahps age is a factor). Then first 6 or 7 games he would be in our top 5 performed. Last few weeks hasn't been as effective. But if the midfield isn't getting the ball it greatly effects the outside players like himself (he will never be someone who gets his own footy), which makes him performing badly seem allot worse.

That's the sort of trade that pivots on jack watts , sidebottom will be a gun it's all on watts

We all overrate Steele fairly heavily on here don't we.....
Don't agree with OP but he's not exactly tearing the World apart with his football this year.

Obviously his footy this year has been pretty poor but he is definitely worth more than Dawes. I love Steele but I agree that he is an expendable player. However, we can't let him and Thomas (who I think will leave) go at the same time.

Last year we had Swan, daisy, Pendle, beams, sidebottom, Blair, wellingham, fasolo, Johnson, dids plus other cameos running through the middle compared to this year- Swan, caff (returning from injury), Pendle, j Thomas, ball (returning froninjury), sidebottom, Blair, Harry, dwyer. The new additions into the midfield this year don't have the smarts, experience, skill set or fitness yet to be able to compete with last years. A bigger load is on the shoulders of pendles, swan, ball and even sidey to cover more ground and play more minutes. This combined with how often we turn the ball over and the loss of run from injuries and young defenders affects how we run out games. Many games this year we have been very good for 2 and a half quarters but struggle after that.

At the moment he has a few mids in front of him. But we are going to need this guy desperately when Swan and Ball leave.

He will be one of our best mids in a few years no doubt about it.
