Whatcha reckon?

He seems a handy goal-kicking option and this is something I've been wondering about for a while - you guys down there would have a better idea so fill me in please.

he's good around goals, yeah.. but he's needed elsewhere.

i reckon he'll be playing near the goals this week anyway.. cause at the main training session this week he was in the goal square for the whole time... soo yeah, should be interesting if he does!

No. We tried it and it failed. Stenglein was recruited after he was a FB for the WA U18 side which he captained. Once he got here we instructed Magpies to play him at CHF with no real success. He dropped a few kilos and improved his endurance so he can be a tagger where he is best suited.

He is not really big enough for a KP at AFL level but it does become obvious that he is a VERY good overhead mark for a midfielder which probably has something to do with him being a KP player at young age.

I doubt he will play anywhere but midfield this week as he is needed there the most, especially with Goodwin and Bode out of the side.;)

Not for me Leigh. We have a hell of a lot better options than that to play the spearhead. Burton, Welsh, Hentschel. All players that would play the FF spot naturally.

As Stiffy said Stinga is a teenage CHB turned into a run with player. He has to take Goody's place this week in the mid-field where we got creamed last week.

Win the mid-field, win the game.

I dont recall that. I seem to remember him playing at CHF for PAMFC quite well for at least a month. I'm sure I saw him in the best players at that time as I remember talking to Port fans at work about him. Is there a port fan out there that can confirm this?

I wouldnt try playing him at CHF at AFL level though.

Just clarifying, I'm not saying he should be groomed for the CHF role.

Although that's an important area to be looked at, I agree he shouldn't be considered there.

At best he could be a "burst" forward such as Roo. I couldn't see him filling the position for a whole game. It would be a waste anyway without Goody, we need him back in the middle.

This week I would put Hentschel at FF, Welshy & Burton out of the pockets and Perrie at CHF. This setup would allow for changes throughout the game. All four have played the FF role successfully before. The other thinking is maybe play Hentschel at CHB as he did for the Eagles last week and put Kenny up at CHF with Perrie at FF. That would change the setup of both the forward and defence so it may not be ideal but certainly worth a thought.

No. He is more valuable in the middle or as a run with player.
Is there a chance he wont play tomorrow? (ensuring he gets over his injury with another 2 weeks off)
Otherwise why pick Shirley?

It seems strange to me going into the game with both these "tagging" types when what we need to do is go for it.

Hentschel did ok mopping up across the back half last week. Play him there again.

Harsh call.

He always performed well at the Magpies in the forward line i thought. Certainly put in 100%

Hmmm... Macca19 complimenting a Crows player... I wonder what Jars458 will have to say about this. :p

The crows have really missed stinger in the last 2 weeks. Especially in the Hawthorn game where he would have been more than useful... following Crawford! Stinger is a well established run with player who has great ability in clearing the ball around the packs and at the centre bounces. He is needed in the centre and on the danger players of the opposition.

I would be interested in seeing him play a more offensive role especially now with the inclusion of Shirley. However I don't think he is suited to being a key forward. He has a good mark though and may be useful as a pinch hitter in the forward line. I would sure enjoy it if Stinger kicked more goals!

An interesting thought Leigh!

OK boys let me clarify that.

Stenglein is a goes and will give you 100% where ever you play him. To start off with, he was played at CHF for Magpies. Crows drafted him hopeing that he would grow a couple of cms which would make him a KPP. He had the build (95 kg at a time) all he needed was a bit more height. It didn't happen. I have no doubt he would be a very good CHF at SANFL level but he is not that type of player for AFL as he doesn't have the build.

Similarly, last season we drafted Finnin and hope he would grow a bit and fill out to be tall enough for KP. Didn't happen.

Stenglein is best suited as a tagger not a KPP. ;)

I am confident that Stenglein will play. Personally there are 2 options as to why Shirley was brought in:

1. Stenglein to take over the role that Goody has played up to now and Shirley to take over Stengleins role.

2. Because we are missing 2 of our best midfielders, we'll tag 2 of their best player.

As for Hentschel, I agree with you topjars. It would probably be better for his development to play at CHB at this early stage of his AFL career. This will allow him a bit more freedom, where he can run off his opponent and provide some run off half back flank. Playing him at FF means that he will be tightly checked which would make it harder for him to adapt to AFL footy.

No, Stinger is much more valuable as a run-with player for team balance. Also, I think there is a real advantage of having taller midfielders - gives more marking power around the ground. Also, have better options as talls in our forward line.

I actually think McGregor could be worth another try up forward (as in a few whole games in a row rather than patches like is now). He has improved his marking and his strength/body work recently and now seems to have the size and presence to make an impact as a foward. And in some games this year he has gone forward in bursts and has had an impact.

Perrie's good form gives us more options and with Stevens coming back after missing a lot of footy I wouldn't mind him being tried back in defence where he played a couple of years ago - just to get back into some form because he was struggling early.

Then we could see Carey, Perrie and McGregor up forward at once with McG at CHF. Stevens will add some run and attack from defence. I'd like to see it tried once or twice.

The main problem with Stinga up forward is that he is a very erratic shot on goal, not as bad as Begley but close.

He should be either in the midfield or on a half back flank.

As far as Macca complimenting a Crows player - the exception thta proves the rule:D

Pretty hard for Macca to criticise Stenglein who is an established AFL player and a good to very good one at that.

It would be like me bagging Roger James. Just can't do it no matter how much you want to!!:D

when players are coming back from a long layoff with injury, they usually have a good 1st game and then they are right off the boil in the second game.
So Stiffy, was Burton the exception that proves this rule? ;)
