Interesting that so many St Kilda supporters are leaving him out of their best 22's.

No doubt his 2005 was disappointing and especially his final game of the season but he wasn't on his lonesome there. No doubt too he did struggle for fitness like many others last year.

Just interested why so few still rate him.

IMO, fit and in form he's a walkup for our best 22.

yeh good solid player just we lack footspeed in the midfield and you can't have the likes of him,harvey,thompson,mcgough etc. in the same team although I still see him as being in our best 22

I like Powelly, hes a tough hard in-and-under type who excels when given a tagging role. I rate him as an essential player. He gets the hard ball out to our skilled on-ballers and makes them look good.

He had a bad back last season that made him look slower than he is, and I admit that he is not the quickest by foot, but his mind is sharp and clear. He doesn't panic. His handballs to free players starts our running movements and yet he follows up with blocks, putting his body on the line.

Players like Ball and Dal Santo cop enough rough stuff, let Powell get in there and protect them.

Yeah i think powelly still in our best 22, but has to be more consistent.

He lacks speed and alot of his kicks go to nowhere.

He's still got a bit of value in him and i'd have him in our starting 22

I expect Powelly and Thommo to prove me wrong yet again.

In my case it's not a case of not rating him, I just hope that a few of the younger players will step up and take their place. McQualter for instance. The kid can not only win a lot of the ball but his attack at the man and the ball is similar to Powell. Oh, and his disposal is slightly better.

Powelly's the type of player who's difficult to fit in your best 22 but plays almost every game anyway. Same with Blake and Thompson. Those three players have some pretty shocking faults but all have a major upside.

While I don't put him in our best 22, Powelly should have a much better season this year with proper preparation, and he should last out the year well as he's not being over-worked at training.

It's hard to squeeze him in after the memory of his 2005 season lingering.

Amazing how some were saying he was nearing retirement after his poor finals series - a year earlier you would have thought he had 3-4 years left in him.

I noticed that too.

Harvey can retire when he likes, but surely 'Mini' Thompson and 'Frankie' Peckett are due after this season. It seemed that many people threw Powell in with these guys as if he is the same age.

IMO, fit and in form he's a walkup for our best 22.

His experience brings a lot to the team and will be a player that play of the bench in 2006, IMO he'll miss a fair few games via 2nds pressure and rotation with other older players.

However he is still a vital player in 2006

Thats exactly what I hope.

Powelly's been great since he's been here, but we need a few of the younger midfielders to start helping Ball with some of the grunt work in the midfield and not relying on vets who may not have more than one year left. Especially come finals time.
