Yes, Bolton being out hurts Sydney, but if Geelong play 3 talls against the Swans I think that will improve Sydney's chances a lot. It will magnify the Swan's greatest strength this season, namely the run out of the backline. I really hope Thompson does this.

As long as SJ keeps mobile, he is capable of matching up well on medium defenders. If he starts with slow mo Steve again we will be not be able to play him with that many talls. Lets hope he stays fit

That's the key. As much as the commentators fawn over his tricks (which can be pretty good), I think Johnson plays his best footy when he covers lots of ground and wears out opponents through superior endurance. It's an element of his game most people still don't realise. He runs players into the ground when he's in top form. That's what he has to do on Sunday.

Steve played well today but... I wonder if his kick from outside 50 will be highlighted thru the week. Pretty sure Chappy run around the back to recieve the handpass and got ignored. Certainly Hawkins put a half lead in and pulled up , not sure if this was because he knew he would get the ball passed to him or he really didn't want the set shot. Actually should have been on the line in the end.
For mine you have to take the good with the bad with a player like Steve but he has never been a huge kick , he should know the distance he can get a goal from. If its good enough for others to pass the ball in that position then maybe he also should do the team thing too.

I dont think any of the Cats forwards aside from Johnson will have a huge game (like 5 or more goals) as we have the KPD to cover them

Hey guys i've been watching SJ lately and he has defineitly been looking good after the first poor rounds. Is he playing more upfield this year? im worried about his hip surgery and it might plgue him later on

If you have been watching him do you care to tell us if he is playing up the field or not ? ;)

Funny enough I don't think he's playing at his best. He's getting results, 6 goals is phenominal but IMO I think he's been more wasteful lately than he has been when at his absolute best. It's not innacuracy i'm talking about either. It's the way he's moving and I still think he's playing for free kicks too much.

I haven't seen that in his last two games. I think he's turned it around (mostly). Was probably taking shots he had no right to in the last quarter yesterday but given the state of the game at the time I'm willing to forgive that.

I just watched the replay of the Brisbane game again. Stevie did a lot more than just kick goals. A lot of second and third efforts and earning his own ball. I agree he's not at his best yet, but he is so much better than his first few matches this year and when he peaks he'll be awesome!

I reckon having Pods back in the side will shuffle the opposition defenders along and give Stevie even more rope.

I yelled at the TV in delight (sad, huh) at one point, where Stevie J WON a free kick for being first at the ball. No playing for frees, no throwing his arms up - just eyes on the ball and commitment to get to it first. Lions defender ended up in his back, free kick awarded to Johnson.

I hope he does this more often. :thumbsu:

You're not wrong with the bolded part. Not only did SJ kick six himself, he also set up another five for his teammates. :thumbsu:

That pass to Hogan surrounded by 4 Brisbane players in the 3rd quarter was vintage SJ.

It was a wonderful performance from Dog and further proof that he simply must stay in the forward half of the ground.

I don't know if his kick chasing up the ground is a directive from the coaches box or Dog simply looking to get involved and help out but as soon as he does it our forward line becomes far less dangerous.

Keep him in the forward half and we'll continue reaping the rewards.

I laughed when it happened because he had to take possession of the ball before he had a chance to flay his arms out but ... I would be naieve to think he didn't play for the in the back to compensate.

I think it is a measure of his attitude in the game. When he has the wrong attitude he plays for the frees and tries to do stuff that never works out. When he has the right attitude in the game he plays for the ball, produces bits of magic, and is more unselfish in setting up his team-mates for goals.

Averaging 3.1 goals a game this season (so far a career-high), Johnson now has 46 goals (sixth in league) and 18 goal assists (equal-third in league) despite missing three games. Looks back to his best since his three weeks off. Will be hard to stop as he picks up momentum into the finals.

Looks like he may top 60 goals in a season for the first time this year.

Has looked a lot better the last two games after his break too. Handy to have him peaking towards the pointy end of the season as opposed to last year when he started off phenomenally and then faded out with his injury.

So much creativity at half forward. I love the passes he gives to Gaz and vice-versa - you can tell they are great mates looking out for each other.

harry o ran off him all night...he needs to get better defensively.
37 inside 50s tonight. We had 25 shots at goal. Think are problems are elsewhere (although O'Brien was good).

our whole forward line (with the exception of Travis) needs to. Pies looked like they had 3 extra blokes down there tonight. killed us out of defence

Harry O is the hottest back man going around. Even though he only started ON Stevie J he broke his confidence.

Into fourth in the Coleman Medal.

I think the lesson we have to learn against the best sides is that we need to play through Podsiadly and Mooney when going long, and Johnson can crumb. Or hit Johnson on the short lead. They are his strengths. Last week we were relying on him taking contested marks against O'Brien which just doesn't happen.

Yep.

Seriously though, why did we have to 're-learn' this? Which coach is in charge of the freakin' obvious?
