I think Maxwell's comment was fair enough but as far as I'm concerned it was a comment that should have been made to Wade and the coaches in person behind closed doors.

Agree yet nothing is ever closed doors. At least he had the stones to put his face to it rather than an unnamed source comment getting out. Wade and Smith are captains not dictators.

How the hell does Maxwell get dropped for an innocnet comment?

While I agree bullying, the old boys club and exclusion in Australian Cricket was out of control in the 70s to 00s yet have we gone too far in the other direction?

Maxwell expressed a concern and Wade couldn't take it. Why? What was so wrong in what he said? Can't anyone have an opinion? Wade could just say criticism noted.

Unless it is same old same old and just who is mates with who and jobs for the boys. In which case nothing has changed.

Disgraceful conduct from Wade and Smith. Shit leadership from Smith especially. This is the national team selection after all.

He was dropped about four months ago so is presumably the reserve

How can his batting average be better than he plays?

It is what it is.

Because averages are a flawed statistic when taken in isolation. For a sport that rates players based on stats so much, the complete lack of analysis is really confusing. I think medians should be taken into account a lot more as it shows how reliable/consistent a player is rather than an average.

All that being said, Smith's average seems about right to me. Fantastic batsman.

Steve Smith also averages 42 over a much larger sample size and is only 23.

I take it you're predicting a prolific test career for him as well?

Yes, yes I am :P

Smith is the new Benaud. Will consolidate as a batsman over the next 12 months and then his leggies will become a very valuable bonus to the team.

Also very likely to be Australia's next captain imo.

What a call that was.

Not so much the Benaud/Leggie part, but calling him as captain back then

Interesting to see if someone had the time to compare them

Just looked at Finch as an example, averages 36, median of 20.5 but that wouldn't surprise many as he is a nothing or big score type of player

Steve Smith, average of 43, median of 26

Actually doubt too many players would ever have a high median score

This article does a pretty decent analysis of it - http://www.cricketweb.net/batting-medians/ - and suggests that a median above 30 is a pretty good yard stick.

Median's will always be significantly lower then average when the upper limit has no defined maximum, as is the case with run scoring.

Also in a cricketing context, not outs always increase a batsmen's average but there is no method for incorporating not outs to a median score, so that will increase the gap between average and median.

The argument at the time of selection was Head v Maxwell. Head was probably in the form of his life at the time but he's fallen in a hole once again and is back to averaging mid 30's for the year. Maxwell only had a small sample size but his form wasn't great although he was coming off a very good season last year.

Early days yet but I'll give the selectors some credit for backing him. If he bats like that every innings I'd be surprised if he doesn't make that number 6 spot his.

Maxwell, but only because he's the other option.

Watching Steve Smith bat makes me violently ill. I can't stand it.

If we need a leggie so desperately get 'Davey' Warner to work on his. They're better than Smith's as it is.

Fair enough.

To be honest I don't think either of them will end up as Test cricketers of any note, although I think Smith is the better player.

:drunk:

Unless you have a quote of yourself claiming he'll be the next best since Bradman, I wouldn't go digging up old posts from others.

I'm happy to say that after his first few tests I didn't think Smith would make it and was very surprised to see him picked for the last Indian series. He's now one of my favourite cricketers of all time and is up there with one of the best I've seen from any country. That includes Tendulkar.
