Still need a KPP

So we still need a KPP at the club for next year. Would be great to snag one with pick 16 that could put pressure on our starting 22 immediately.

Who are the forwards available and who are the backs? Who do we think could slot in next year if need be?

I just asked the same question on the Draft preview thread...

it seems from the BF phantom drafts that the main options are;

Jackson Paine - KPF
Fraser McInnes (probably go earlier)
Michael Talia - KPD
Sam Frost - forward or back
Julian Dobosz - forward or back
Zyrus Manson - KPF

Paine and McInnes seem to be the main options at 16, the others would be a reach that early but the real draft does tend to go very differently than the phantoms.

Firstly I am happy that we didnt sell the farm, or screw up our Salary Cap by paying Clark 700k+ for 4 seasons.

On top of looking to draft 1 KPP with either 16 or 20, I think we need to look at the 2nd tier league to find a KPP for our small players to play around while a young KPP develops.

Jackson Paine (VIC – KPF/Mid)Height: 193cm, Weight: 87kg, DOB: 21/06/1993
Recruited from: Sandringham Dragons
Style: Matthew Pavlich
Player comparison:
Range: 10-35
Profile: Really like Paine as a forward. Particularly strong mark on the lead but also marks strongly overhead. Marks at the highest point which is what you look for in all good forwards. Really hard working type who seems to enjoy the contest. Good work rate. Can push into the midfield and play really well in there as well as up forward. Good field kick for someone his size.
Why: Possibly a little early for Paine, but GWS need some more key position players and Paine would be a good choice. Liked Paine’s work throughout the U18 champs playing as the no.2 marking target alongside Patton so I think he could be a nice fit for GWS.

Fraser McInnes (WA – KPF/KPD)Height: 194cm, Weight: 91kg, DOB: 19/07/1993
Recruited from: Perth Football Club
Style: Dustin Fletcher
Player comparison:
Range: 10-45
Profile: Key position player with great potential at his size. Strong mark overhead. Very mobile and should grow out well. Has had some injury difficulties but looks good. Versatility is there for him to play a range of positions, but possibly like him more as a key forward. 1st round quality talent who despite not playing throughout the U18 champs is slowly rising up the standings.

Zyrus Manson (WA – KPF)
Height: 195cm, Weight: 84kg, DOB: 24/04/1993
Recruited from: Claremont
Style: Lance Franklin?
Player comparison:
Range: 10-undrafted
Profile: Haven’t seen so much as a second of footage of this guy, but the one thing from all those I’ve spoken to about Manson is that the talent is there. Has a massive running vertical jump as his draft combine score would indicate. Ability to take over games like probably no other talent in this draft outside of maybe Patton. But doesn’t yet understand team structures, and hasn’t played much serious team football so it is a big time high risk, high reward selection because he could be anything if he can apply himself, but could also become nothing very quickly. Also there is the go home factor.
Why: In that one key forward in this draft with the talent to take Carlton to a premiership. It will no doubt take him a couple of years as it takes all key forwards to develop, but once he has had those few years in the AFL system he could be as good as any key forward around the league. Carlton have the resources and players around him (Betts, Garlett and Yarran to support) to make Manson work. In a fairly average draft why not take a shot?

Range: 10-30
Profile: Probably the best key position defender in this draft. Big contested mark. Has a very good endurance base. Has a strong work rate and really has great strength for his age and really seems to enjoy wrestling with his opposing big men often out marking his direct opponent in a contest. Speed is fairly average. Needs to keep working on his kicking and build more consistency by foot.

Sam Frost (VIC – KPD/KPF)Height: 193cm, Weight: 85kg, DOB: 28/08/1993

Range: 10-45
Profile: Athletic KPP from a volleyball background. Has absolutely crazy dash for someone his size! Not afraid to take on his man which is a good sign considering his athletic attributes. Has shown bits both up forward and down back, so could be effective at either end depending on needs. Like him most at centre half back with his pace providing that dash. Can tell he has played a number of other sports with some of the things he can do. Really started on fire at the U18 Champs. Allot to work with. Great potential. Need to develop consistency. Needs to develop more consistency in kicking because it is all over the place.

Julian Dobosz (TAS - KPF)
Height: 193cm, Weight: 85kg, DOB: 17/11/1992

Range: 15-45
Profile: Sensational talent and has that full forward ability few have. Is very new to the game which makes him incredibly interesting. The thing that stands out to me with Dobosz is his ability to read the ball better than his opponent which seems to allow him to get to the right positions more often than not. Very high level athlete and is incredibly quick. Showed that he is a big time goal kicker throughout the year while also putting in some very strong performances during the u18 championships. Would like for him to work a bit harder defensively. Tackling still doesn’t look completely natural to him and needs allot of work. But for someone so new to the game, looking very promising.

I agree. We should target a KPF as our mature age pickup. I've got no idea who though..

My thoughts exactly, we need someone who doesn't need to bulk up and can throw their weight around right from the start. Find a kid that likes the carbs!

Who are the best mature age KPP in WAFL/SANFL/VFL?

Haydn Busher and Tom Lee are my favourites from the WAFL, and I've talked them up for what seems like a long time now. I'd take them both as rookies.

Not a lot in the SANFL. Someone posted the article about Ben Gazzola just before. He is a ready made body, but still new to the game. I like him as a rookie list prospect, but he wouldn't be seen as possible depth all that early. Best bet from the SANFL in regards to KPPs would be some 18/19 year olds, likely to go late in the rookie draft. But again, nothing ready made.

Jarrad Boumann is probably the pick of the mature aged KPPs in the VFL, along with Tim Mohr. Hawthorn were very interested in getting Boumann from GWS as a pre-listed player, so he could be an option there.

What I would do, is talk to Will Thursfield from Richmond. Seems likely that he might be delisted, so I would try to get him to nominate for the PSD. He'd be very solid depth for down back. Better (and cheaper) option than Zac Dawson.

For me, use our 16 and 20 on best player available and then use our later picks and rookie list for talls.

Strongly agree with targetting free agency in 2012. It's actually so close. Clubs will already be posturing to secure certain players. Star players heading towards the end of their career will be courted heavily. Especially players around the 27-28 age group. They have mutiple good seasons remaining and are at the peak of their career.

Imagine adding a Daniel Wells for free to the list. He fits the age group and years served perfectly. There are hundreds of WA players out there. Not to mention non-WA targets.

I'm certain Bondy has thought about it. There is a reason we have had a propensity to draft WA players with our early picks over the last few years. Hill, Fyfe, Morabito, Broughton, Ballantyne will be harder to dislodge from our list given they are from WA. Mundy will be targetted heavily by Melbourne clubs, he is a star target to 10 Victorian clubs and also will be approachable. Lucky our club has the foresight to sign him to a long term contract.

As far as the draft goes i'd love if Matthew Buntine slid to our first pick but he's looking like a top 10 prospect. I like the jibe of Liam Sumnar also. I'm of the opinion we still don't have enough class in terms of small backs and small forwards though obviously our need for KPP also needs to be addressed.

Jordan Lockyer would be a valuable addition around the pick 20 mark. Super professional, competitive natured kid with a reasonable petigree. Could be a very solid 3rd tall in the backline. Tahlia, McInnes, Kersten as possible tall targets.

It would be great to get Busher on the list. Perhaps get that Marlon kid with a 2nd or 3rd rounder. He's a huge risk, was reluctant to even come down and play a few colts game so he's eligible to be drafted. Mind you when he bothered he snagged a lazy 8. I doubt any interstate club would bother, he'll almost certainly head home same as that kid who went to Richmond.

I would be interested in eithe Callum Wilson or McCaffer from Collingwood. We could get either on the cheap i.e PSD or very late draft pick trade. Wilson has looked really good at AFL level when he has an opportunity - good straight kick and big body and leads well. He has fallen behind Lynch, Darling, Nat and probably now Lycett coming through. He may even be delisted by Eagles. And for McCaffer - he has looked good as another big body lead up forward who if anyone else has noticed never gets pushed off the ball and doesnt go to ground.
