It just come to my attention (and how fast has time been, although probably not for Matty) that this Tuesday will be D Day for him.

I'm really nervous about the wait. Let's hope something good will come out of this and he can be back this year playing with the Cats and giving us more of that 'winning edge' he's been giving us over the years.

Worst case scenario: If it does happen, the questions are asked "What about players admitted to using drugs? Or the bullsh*t 3 strikes and your out rule (this applies to a certain Hawthorn player that has been tested positive twice!). Stokesy never used the stuff and gets a harder penalty!

Keep supporting him, guys:thumbsu:.

Re: Tuesday - D Day for Stokes

I love how the misspelling of his given name has even extended to the legal arena which has him down in their system as "Matthew John Stokes".

Dismissal on a technicality? ;)

I'm not nervous about the wait. The way I see it is if the prosecution had enough evidence on Stokes to make a conviction stick, the matter would've been done and dusted by now. The fact the prosecution had three months between when Stokes was arrested and the time the matter came to court initially to mount a case, yet had to ask for more time to find more evidence, means to me the case against Stokes was flimsy in the first place.

Re: Tuesday - D Day for Stokes

im stunned that the trafficking charge hasnt been downgraded or thrown out alltogether... this is a misdemenour, nothing more..he'll be fined for possesing and that will be the end of it..

Was he actually caught in possession? Admission of having possession at some time is not possession.

The trafficking charge is a joke.

Re: Tuesday - D Day for Stokes

Not that you'd expect any different, but here's what his lawyer had to say at the last hearing:

Mark Dean SC said:
It is difficult to imagine a more tenuous or weak case in relation to a charge of trafficking

The prosecution can take the reasonable course, the fair course and the appropriate course, of not proceeding with the trafficking charge.

There was also this reported about the case against Stokes:

Prosecutors asked for more time to review a large number of telephone intercepts they say may provide more evidence against Stokes, but Mr Dean argued charges had already been laid and prosecutors had ample time to review their case.

Make up your own mind about how strong you think the case against him is based on that.

Personally, I think we'll see Stokes running out at the Gabba in Round 8.

Re: Tuesday - D Day for Stokes

Isn't Tuesday merely a contest mention or something of the sort, rather than the final hearing?

Re: Tuesday - D Day for Stokes

Bump??

When will we know? It's apparent to me that after yesteday's insipid performance it would benifit the club to have alternative options for the match committee. Come on matty! Hopefully he can rejoin the team with the form he had in 07.

Re: Tuesday - D Day for Stokes

We'll know by 5 pm, its hard to imagine a prosecutor will come up with more evidence in the next couple of hours, either way it is a pretty amateur prosecution. What was the excuse for not being ready?,

Judge: So, Mr prosecutor, what is the case the case for the prosecution?
Prosecutor: M'laud I'm sorry but the dog ate my notes, can I have an extension?

Re: Tuesday - D Day for Stokes

Didn't the prosecution ask for more time at the last hearing as well?

Yes, they asked to delay till the afternoon the last time he appeared as well and then for further time to examine the intercepted calls rubbish. I am guessing the judge will not react kindly to a charge of 1 gram wasting their time again.

Re: Stokes to plead guilty of possession if trafficking charge dropped

Sigh of relief.

Bring on Round 8... hopefully the little bugger gets a couple more BOG's in the Magoos and proves himself.

2007 Stevie J eat your heart out.

Up your ass police, up your ass indeed with your bullshit charges.

Correct decision and simply ridiculous that such a fanciful charge was allowed to hang over him for nigh on three months.

If he wasn't a public figure he'd have been done for possession, put his hand up straight away, taken his right whack and moved on, but because of who he is they threw in a stupid, guaranteed to fail trafficking charge and stretched it out for three months.

Stokes walks away looking like a dill, the police walk away looking incomptent.

I think that given his behaviour since this all came out has been exemplary, as has his form in the VFL in the last two weeks, the leadership group should extend an invitation for him to return to senior contention.

NO

I'm glad he got off because the trafficking charge had no basis, but the club punishment was right and it should stay that way.

It's much easier to behave yourself when you have the burden of a life ban from the sport you love hanging over you. Stokes has stuffed up, and needs to be punished.
I'd prefer that he serves the suspension regardless of how much the side needs him. There is a bigger issue here than just Geelong winning games in 2010, and that is the sustained culture turnaround that the club has managed to initiate since the end of '06. Stokes, and the entire playing group, need to understand that if you behave in a manner that breaks the law, no matter how petty the charge would seem, you bring the entire club with you, and to an outside eye the club is judged as a whole along with that player. There will no doubt be ongoing accusations of Geelong being drug cheats and junkies etc., something which the club had tried to leave behind with the very public fall from grace of Ablett Snr. All you have to do is look at how spectacularly the Eagles imploded at the end of 07, and draw some parallels with Geelong now to see how precarious the situation just might be.
