This is a thread for supercoach players to discuss issues of strategy. No posting of teams in this thread and if these issues have been addressed elsewhere, my apologies.

Some thoughts to ignite discussion.

What proportion of experienced, proven supercoach scorers do you want in your team compared to up and comers?
I would suggest a break down of say 10 quality players (460k+), perhaps 6 up and comers (under 460k), 8 or so rookies (under 100k) and perhaps the rest can be bargains or players with potential (i.e. those returning from injury). What is your opinion?

Do you have a strategy for trading?
The '07 prospectus recommends trading heavily in the first 3 weeks to take advantage of the price changes in round 4. Do you agree?

Is it advantageous to have money in the bank going into round 1?

How long will you persist with a player before trading them? 2-3 rounds?

With the change in Supercoach team structure (more centres, less rucks) mean that the overall score you will need will be higher than last year?

Is it better long term to have one expensive player, say 500k+ and one cheap player, say under 150k; rather than have 2 players at around 3-400k each?

Do you have a strategy at all? Or just pick the best players for the price?

Cheers

i would tell you but then i would have to kill you........;)

i think its crazy leaving money in the bank.....you have to spend money to make money........think of it as an investment.....

I personally think it bad news to already have trades in mind before the season starts, which is why I will avoid injury prone guys even if they are cheap. I think the cheaper/younger your centres are the better off your team will be in the long run, because you are able to spend money on better backs and rucks, of which there are few.

Part of the reasoning with leaving some money in the bank is that when time comes that you do have to trade (which is inevitable), you don't necessarily need to trade 2 players to free up any cash, when you only want to trade 1.

Not at all, you make most of your money on players who start around ~$100K. It's more like you don't spend money to make money...

Which is the point I was going to bring up. I have so many players where I can see money being made at the end of Round 3. Is it worth keeping a couple of million in the bank and just load my side with rookies who will increase in value soon, and trade away after that to get a gun side by the point end of the season?

I guess if you invest in speculative players, it will certainly free up more cash later on for when you have a better idea about which stars are firing. Its a bit extreme to fill your team with rookies, but I'm finding that there are a lot of value players to be had in the midfield, which allows me to invest more on having a solid backline and forwardline. You need to have a balance, enough solid players that if your young guns don't fire, you still score reasonably, but enough young guns that your team has room to increase in value.
I'm looking at undervalued players at the 350-400k mark.
Here's a free tip:
Moody, Rischitelli, D. Bell, Montagna, Griffen, P. Burgoyne, Monfries, C. A. Johnson.

Yeah so you can really see the teams for Round 1 and make sure the rookies you have are playing etc.

I had Boak but apparently he won't be playing for a while - who do you reckon has the best value out of those players you mentioned? I already have Monfries.

Defenders:
Daniel Bell good value, possibly Josh Gibson and James Walker (depending on whether they're named in the round 1 sides)
Mids:
Look to Brisbane, Matthews has his young mids tackling a lot which really ups their scores. Matthew Moody is often overlooked and Rischitelli will be consistent. Moody, if he's in the team from round 1 is great value.
Griffen has a lot of potential and Montagna and also Salopek will be consistent for a decent price.
Forwards:
Hard to find decent value.
An unpopular choice amongst a lot supercoach players will be Cam Mooney. However, it is unlikely he will have as many suspensions as last year, he knows he will be the pivotal fwd along with Ottens (also a reasonable pick).
Not much decent stuff going in the forwards for cheap. Try save money elsewhere to spend in your forward line.
Russell Robertson if fit will go up in value, Nathan G. Brown is a given.

In the end trades are more valuable than cash. Yes! its nice to have some cash tucked away just in case, yet if you trade too heavily you can have all the cash you like, you just cant get extra trades.

Very true. But the majority of the cash will be made after Round 3...

Thats another person who has mentioned Salopek, is he worth looking at and can someone give me some background and stats on him?

How was his pre season etc.

After a number of midfield restructures, I keep returning to Salopek as the best quality 400k-ish mid going. He was real quality last year in not heaps of game time. Will get slightly more this year. Averaged 85 last year in 87 mins a game. Had a strong NAB game against Adelaide, scoring 122, which suggests he's fit. Value should improve, was very classy as a junior.

Arrhhh i really want him now! But i would have to sacrafice Black which i doubt i could. He sounds like he is ready to explode, but i just cant fit him into my team, not that i dont want to though.

I can't agree, I've a player in my team's midfield who's better value (a little less) and better performed IMHO.

Franklin and N.Brown close to best value buys in game.... I expect Higgins to go up over from 246k to 450+k after this year!!!

Thanks TRS for your post. It's made me really re-evaluate the mids available around the 400k mark and I'm definitely curious about which player you're thinking of. Perhaps I was hasty in dubbing Salopek the best quality when you have players of the calibre of Selwood, Peake, Hasleby, etc. around the same price. I still rate Salopek highly though and at this stage of the season, you basically have to take an educated punt on these sorts of players. If anyone is strapped for cash though, you can definitely find the most value in the midfielders.

N. Brown is probably the best value player around.

Shaun Higgins looks good in pre-season, should do very well this year. My only query is his role in the team when they have some solid small forward type players already in Johnson and Aker and a wealth of young gun mids.

Buddy's a risk. Will have a couple of stand-out games in the year but I reckon might lack consistency.

i pick players that i know i can trus to have a good game each week, then i just pick the best players i can with the rest of my $
