Stratton: Dislocated Knee

The key question is what is meant by dislocated?

The most common form of "dislocated" knee is where the patella (kneecap) displaces laterally. Looks horrible but is put back in pretty easily; treated with physio/ strapping/ exercises to reduce recurrence - another thread mentioned that Darren Cresswell used to get these and would put it back in and play out the game (the pain is worst the 1st time as thats when the kneecap ligaments get torn). This injury doesn't involve any ACL/ PCL/ collateral ligaments

The other true knee dislocation is a massive injury tearing multiple ligaments (of ACL/ PCL/ collaterals) and usually requires very high energy eg car accidents.

Unfortunately there are no hard and fast rules until we know the severity of the injury, a slated expected recovery time, and take into account his fitness base or 'training age' and how long it will take him to get match fit.

Put it this way, I don't think it's season ending but it's not a week either.

Yet somehow I have some sort of calm about it all (don't get me wrong, I am shattered for the guy) but I reckon we can, and will soldier on and not lose games we shouldn't.

Lot to like about the Hawks at the moment.

I'm listening to a bit of moginie's favorite music to calm me and keep it real atm:

Dislocated knee doesn't sound good. It put a damper on the whole night, 'pardon the pun', we didn't realize the seriousness at the time.

Watching Carkos press conference this morning he looked down when talking about it. He already mentioned 'Murphy' as a replacement.

Let us all hope it is not a career ending injury for the lad and is back in time to play finals this year.

When I dislocated mine, it took three months to recover. That was without surgery. Depending on the damage to knee as all the ligaments would be severely stretched. Also their could be Meniscus damage from the ligaments.

The problem is the knee is now unstable as it dislocate takes quite a lot of force, and taping the knee won't prevent it from happening again.

It is just like the shoulder, after you do it once, you are most likely to have it happen again.

He'll be right. :thumbsu: :)

It's what appeared to be a severe hyper-extension of the knee thats got me really concerned. That just can't be good.

Happened just in front of us at the G last night and then I watch it on After The Game last night when they replayed it over and over again. Hard to watch. Tough kid too! Hardly showed any sign of emotion.

His absence will surely be a factor. And Murphy, Schoenmakers, or whoever, will really need to step up to fill his role.

Fingers crossed the results are better than it looked.

I must admit that when he did it I felt as sick as I did when Bailey did his knee (again) in 2009. I just hope he makes a full recovery.

I'm glad that someone is getting the benefit of the musical equivalent of a bandsaw, TAITA. :D

For what the commentators declared was the most painful injury you could receive Stratton didn't even seem to change facial expression, not even a famous Hodge like grimace.

In summary I support your view.

Clarkson has just said on ABC radio that they are not sure of all the damage but they do not think he has done an ACL, however it is a significant injury.

They are hoping he is out for 12 weeks or so, rather than season ending.

would be able to play next week, will be rested as a precaution, and we will have him back vs geelong

Hey MM, is this wishful thinking or is it based on info you have?

Just for the record I'm a big fan of your result rather than the 8-12 weeks that seems to be roughly the general feedback.

I reacon he would have watched the footy show last week and in seeing the overplayed Gary Lyon thing - tried to show no pain. Very tough!!

Depends on alot of things. Firstly is there any structural damage to the ACL or PCL?

If no then he can either have surgery or rehab without it. This usually takes up to 6-16 weeks for the normal person. Proffessional athletes are likely to be 7-10 weeks if the news is good on the above sentence.

Worst case scenario he won't play until 2012.

Fingers crossed.
