I would think if you're trying to focus than music would be as big a distraction as any.

No music means I can actually get some work done.

I've always gone without music for the last year of high school and the first couple in uni but now that I study a lot at uni I need to have something as noise to drown out people talking and even just the distraction of people walking past.

Was just listening to Steel Panther's "Balls Out" album. I find I study really well to stuff like "Just Like Tiger Woods", "If You Really Really Loved Me" and "I like Drugs"

Brian Eno and kind of ethereal, atmospheric pieces are good. Melodic music tends to be way too distracting.

I usually listen to electronic music while studying, but preferably ambient (Tangerine Dream are excellent) or some brain-food electronic like Autechre. On the other hand, Flying Lotus has way to much going on in his music, so no go. Also, some solo bluesy/adult pop stuff is good as background music if need be, like Annie Lennox, George Michaels more ballady tunes (basically anything after Faith album really), etc.

The Bladerunner soundtrack has worked well for me in the past.

Back in high school, I did a lot of my final HSC study listening to Pink Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here' album.

Basically, atmospheric sound worlds and moods, kind of like what SA was saying.

Mount Kimbie, Shulman, Heyoka, Luke Vibert, Salmonella Dub. There's some to start you off and some sort of variety. Mostly lyric free which is a requisite for study IMO.

If you go to www.grooveshark.com and start with one if the above artists, their 'related artists' lists are great. Hours of free streaming radio.

Usually nothing. If I need to cover noise, ambient classical music is usually the go. I quite like Ludovico Einaudi's stuff - calm and minimalist and therefore not very distracting.

The Lord of the Rings soundtrack. Perfect, 2+ hours of bliss.
I also listen to Video game music. Anything without lyrics should be the go.

What are your go-to video game OSTs to listen to? Pretty keen to check some out.

Not studying at the moment, but anything with minimal lyrics and albums that flowed from one song to the next were fantastic. Passion Pit, Fleet Foxes, Crystal Castles, TV on the radio all good. Used to find I'd do my best work when the album had finished and there was just silence. Play the music to get me concentrating, but then have the music end.

Got right into classical music at the end of my studies when I was doing my masters and stressed to the max. Even started listening to white noise like rain or waterfalls.
