The Age -

MELBOURNE chairman Jim Stynes has directed his chief executive Cameron Schwab to defuse a potentially divisive scenario involving coach Dean Bailey, who is soon to be out of contract.

The Stynes intervention came after a series of potentially inflammatory comments attributed to Schwab two days ago, which were construed to have placed Bailey under intense pressure as he coaches through his final contracted season.

Schwab told The Age last night his comments had been misunderstood and that he had contacted Bailey two nights ago to clarify an interview he gave with The Australian discussing a recently completed review of the club's board and football department in which Schwab praised the club's directors and its ''young administration'' but did not mention the Demon coaches. Schwab also suggested that the club's on-field progress could possibly be fast-tracked.

Stynes intervened after Melbourne directors were alerted to Schwab's comments. Several directors were disappointed that the chief executive had not made contact with Bailey despite his comments and the potential ramifications of the Andrews review into the club that was dissected on Melbourne radio extensively on Tuesday.

sounds like a bit of a non-issue, schwab defused the situation pretty quickly with his comments in that article, made contact with dean and stated it was a matter of a simple misunderstanding

Must be a quiet week if they are trying to make something out of this. They try to stir the pot & see if they can create a problem where there isn't one.

Yes love the media, love to hate them.

I think it's a fair comment from Schwab, he praised the parts of the board & footy department that were reviewed that are doing really well, in his mind (and plenty of others) that didn't include the coaching staff, haha.

That doesn't say he wants Bailey gone, just he doesn't rate him in the really well group

I wonder if I'm the only one that thinks Bailey will be gone in 2012, irrepective of where we finish on 2011. There is no way the club isn't going to chase both Roos and Malthouse if they're willing.

Roos would suck for us... Malthouse would be AMAZING :)

Brighter news for the Demons is that Jordan Gysberts is on the verge of re-signing with the club. The NAB Rising Star nominee is expected to commit to Melbourne for at least another two years with his manager Alastair Lynch in Melbourne this week to finalise the deal. Lynch also manages the soon-to-be-out-of-contract Tom Scully, who has been touted as a potential Greater Western Sydney signing and the club and Lynch are expected to discuss the Scully situation in the coming days.

Thought that was the most interesting part of the article.

Exactly right Puppet, why would schwab give Bailey A WRAP WHEN OUR START HAS BEEN POOR.I would love Dean to coACH US TO OUR FIRST flag IN OVER 45YEARS,but saying that his game plan and tactics need to find some fire or he is in strife if we start to lose games we are expected to win.
Schwab the goose shouldnt have told the world about our ins and outs at the club in the first place the toss pot, only causes tension which right know we dont need.

We're 2-1-1 and sitting in the 8, how exactly is that a poor start?

The performances have been shit even though we won 2 games against severely undermanned sides. If you can't see that ......

Just wait until the fixture sorts itself out for us.

I agree to some extent, I think I watched the worst 90 point win ever last week but we won & won big as expected. You can only beat what’s put before you & when it comes to poor like the Lions or GC teams we did just that.

We didn’t win pretty but we won & that is the mark of a "good" side. I'm not saying we are good yet but we have won the games we are supposed to win.

Lets hope the break gives us a chance to find form.

Caroline Wilson at her best..

I read with interest in today's Age that Caroline is writing a piece in tomorrow's paper about the the troubles at Demon Land. I can hardly wait for that.

She's like a dog with a bone. In more ways than one.

Is this just a generic "troubles at mfc" in general from Caro or do you know if she's specifically targeting something/someone, could be Bailey, the gameplan, the players either on or off field?

I have no doubt Caro will creatively weave them all together as a sign of a greater malaise within the club.

The good news is she'll probably apologise for the article in a few weeks time...

Maybe the majority wants Bailey out, but the worst thing would be a mid season meltdown. Would throw off our whole season, and the dynamic for the next one. Just play this one out methinks, like Matty Knights, before we make any decisions...

I agree with this. And we don't want to be sacking coaches early and paying out big sums of money for nothing, given our financial history. I'm happy to pay Bailey the respect of seeing out his contract.

Given our soft draw, I think we may do enough to avoid a mid-season meltdown/sack-the-coach circus. We're good enough to knock off the bottom rung of teams and keep our head above water til seasons end, but it's going to be at that stage where our board needs to sit down and assess whether Bailey is the right man for the job.

Just a couple of things on this thread:

1. What tension?

2. What troubles at Demonland?

3. What threat to Bailey?

All a load of bulldust to sell papers . As per usual its a slow news week and things just get made up.

As I said....its all booooooooldust.
