News Suns to ask for Pick 1 as a priority pick

Great news as a dogs fan.
Same with North and StKilda, our futures are very reliant on the growth of the expansion clubs.

And why would that be?

To all those jumping up and down, remember, without overly generous priority picks, Lance Franklin wouldn't have played for Hawthorn and Scott Pendlebury wouldn't have played for Collingwood.

Those priority picks had objective criteria and weren’t handed out for three years in advance. As to whom Collingwood and Hawthorn would have taken 15 years ago with one less pick, it’s speculation. Hawthorns PP (Roughead) jut retired.

And suns will still botch it up.

Logical reason would have been to fold GC and the AFL to admit it hasn't worked.

Agree with you, no way will they retain personal in the 5 year cycle, especially talented youngsters unless the chain them to a post.
Whom would voluntarily play footy in the environment with just a few thousand spectators, its like playing in extended junior competition, not inspiring.

On behalf of Carlton FC, I again want to thank the AFL for unfettered access to two state league players after our 2 win wooden spoon season last year.

I can't help but feel they wanted to do this for the Suns last year but couldn't because of us.

Pathetic. They should have got 2 mid range picks at best. 3 more years of compromised drafts.

The Draft is always compromised due to Father Son Picks and now Academy Zone Selection

I wouldn't have even given them a priority pick this year. There is no way that the AFL needed to commit to 3 years of priority picks for them. What if Gold Coast finished top 6 next year. Imagine how laughable the priority picks would seem in hindsight. The best thing the AFL ever did was stop doing priority picks in the first round, this is a big, big step backwards for fairness.

What they should have had to do is buckle down, work hard on building a successful culture. Instead they are going to be the beneficiaries of the biggest handout in history. If Gold Coast get success now, I'll just feel disgusted. Not to mention the AFL is giving the middle finger to all the planning and hard work that list managers of all the other clubs have been doing so far this year. Particularly the ones with top 10 picks.

Anyway its pretty clear the AFL want the Gold Coast onto the GWS cycle where they had so many valuable players that even when they lost a few they get multiple first rounders and it clears up their salary cap space. Rinse and repeat. They knew it wouldn't happen naturally any time soon because there isn't enough senior quality, so they are trying to artificially make it happen.

One interesting side affect will be the benefit that clubs who have players who want to go to Gold Coast will suddenly have. They'll be loaded up with picks and eager to get some senior leadership to support their new ranks of top draft picks. Somebody will definitely get some huge bargains.

But at least teams know about it.

How about doing pick 1 next year and then teams can account for it when it comes to trading future picks.

Or better still, do something about their retention rather than just giving them more players to lose. They have done nothing at all about dealing with the problem, which is retention. Below are their top 11 picks in history, most of who are still playing and acceptable from talent perspective to be drafted in that range.

The * ones are the players they couldn't keep - How the incompetent 'leaders' at the AFL can't see it's not a matter of getting more talent in the door - IT'S ABOUT KEEPING TALENT THERE. The corruption of the draft at the last minute does nothing at all to solve this problem.

I read somewhere recently hat the vast majority of clubs were opposed to the Suns getting kind of COLA/Player retention allowance.

Not sure how this assistance package will be any easier to sell tbh :)

I can't even see how it helps them overcome their problems. It's another example of the poorly thought out policy of the AFL, knee jerk reaction that will only cause more problems than it solves.

They should have given them better off field support, including player development and welfare, plus a decent footy manager.

Pushes our pick 24 to 26 and Melbournes pick 22 to 24 which Fremantle most likely get for Langdon.

If B Ellis and Tomlinson get 2 level compo, it will push pick 24 to 28 and 22 to 26.

Not happy Jan.

Already spend the most in player welfare in the AFL.

All the off field stuff has been set in motion like it should have been in 2011, good football department and welfare division with actual proper facilities. This is a full club reset.

FWIW this is a sink or swim from here, this is it as much help we get, we won't get anymore, we will have 5 years to get this right, if we don't then the club has no one to blame but itself and the future is in severe jeopardy.

if everything else is right, why do they need the picks? They already have a stack of talent, it should be onwards and upwards. Plus they have pick 1 and 19 plus 1 from next year (likely) too. They don't need more talent undermining plans other teams put in place last year. They have completely changed the deal after it was signed.

Image the government said to you - we want you to go and get solar panels because it looks good on our green paper.
You pay $10k for a new system
The government then says, some people can't afford it, so we are going to charge you $5k to help your neighbour pay for their system

Fun fact, Essendon has been waiting longer for a finals win than GCS has for a flag....can we have some picks now?

FFS this is too much
Fully supported Pick 1 this year in an attempt to get Rowell and Anderson committed up there (a la Rankine/Luko)

If this works, and the Suns rebound and go on to win 3+ flags, the backlash is going to be enormous.

Dees, Saints, Dockers & Blues fans well within their rights to ask WTF of the AFL here.

I think some people forget the Dees, Saints, Blues have all had multiple bites at the PP apple as have Hawthorn and Richmond so any outrage is a bit rich with this in mind and the fact that some of the above clubs have raided the Suns and GWS of elite talent

It is almost certain that they wont from the public comments and pushback from the other clubs regarding compromising live pick trading that I have seen

Gee wiz, I guess the AFL didn't value the opinion of the the Crows list management team over getting a return on the $20m pa investment that they are sinking into the Suns each year to get them up and running.

Who wouldn't have thought that? 🤔😉
