I was thinking about this the other day...
I remember in 2004, Mark Williams did a lot of talking early in the season and preseason about empowering the on field leadership and also the wider playing group and almost taking a slight step back in terms of constant pressure and micromanagement. When we won that year, I remember thinking that was an early indicator and a hallmark of a team about to hit it's absolute peak. I think generally, the path of a coach and a playing group tends to go like this:

Tough love & breaking bad habits > Establishing the news norms and "style" > Leaders emerge and establish consistency > Trust between coach and playing group is 100% embedded > Coach empowers playing group > Success > Either the fire still burns or group is satisfied > Players grow too comfortable and abuse trust > Because of the success and established relationship the coach's judgement is compromised > Gold passes, playing / staying too long, downhill from here

I expect that to a degree, Josh will need to start from stage one. We call this a succession plan, but it's not really (at least I hope not). It's basically a way for the club to do what it's too compromised to do in a way that it saves face. I would hope there's a little Josh can carry over, but I really hope there's a lot he doesn't. Pragmatically we need to treat Josh like a year 1 coach while in the long term judging the club for decision and method.

Of course he is, he’s not a fool.

he’s a fool if he doesn’t, which is exactly why this type of thing is stupid.
He'd better not acquiesce to the current Ship of Fools down at Alberton.

No suffering them lightly.

Be blunt. Be his own man.

If Carr is ghosting Kane as the kids say, then that is the best news since Hinkley moved out of the coaching box on game day.

Carr won't take any rubbish from Kane and he won't leak to him.

It is also more than likely that Chad is gone too. Chewy has mentioned it a couple of times that he is more than likely out the door when his contract finishes up at the end of the year.

Start the Carr.

I'm over all the negatives of how this came about now and I just want Josh in there and going, whatever happens it's part of the next step. The player he was and the approach to the game he had gives me hope on what he can impart to the group when he has full control and the stale air out the door.
you are on the wrong forum if you are not looking for negative comments. It's all anyone on here posts about.

#sackcarr! (j/k)

My worry is that anyone who's agreed to be part of this stupid handover and stupid gameplan isn't the coach we need. But I'll take anything over Ken right now so I hope he's letting it be known that he'd be happy to take over at a moments notice. He could take 10% of the bump in membership revenue when Ken leaves to cover any gap in pay for the rest of the year.

Going into 2026, we can't have a coaching panel that still looks like this:

Chad Cornes - Forwards
Tyson Goldsack - Defensive
Hamish Hartlett - SANFL
Matthew Lobbe - Ruck/Development
Jason Williams - Development
Cameron Sutcliffe - Development

This would be close to the worst coaching panel in the league and an indictment on Koch, who in 2012, said what this Club needed was a fully-funded football program.

So who can we go after to support Josh?

I've seen Hodge's name mentioned - would be great to have someone with a hard edge that was actually successful on the field to look after the midfield.

It might be a good idea to have an experienced Senior Assistant, similar to Richardson in 2013 and Walsh in 2014.

I would go after Don Pyke, personally but others may not agree.

Who you got?

Yeah, I think Hodge and Pyke would have to be braindead to leave their current jobs to be assistants to Josh Carr.

HH seems to be guaranteed to be here next year, according to Chewy

Goldsack is fine.

Williams is fine.

I can be convinced of Chad Cornes, but not as a main line coach.

Lobbe and Sutcliffe can leave.

Yeah. It is absolutely wild that after Primus was hung out to dry with next-to-no support amidst a bare bones rebuild, we’re gonna expect Josh Carr to pick through the ashes of this boondoggle with a murderer’s row of D-graders.

Whereas Kenny™ was given an assortment of quality guys such as Darren Burgess, Alan Richardson, Phil Walsh, Michael Voss, Matthew Nicks, Brendon Lade, Nathan Bassett, Brett Montgomery, Jarred Schofield and of course Carr himself over two stints.

For a start Carr could construct a gameplan based on sound principles, I suggest a good defensive underpinning should be its foundations. Forget emulating Hok ball and look at the clubs who have had sustained success and take elements from them. Take the plan and consult widely with knowlegable people both within and outside the club. You may not entice people of elite quality to come, but there are plenty of good footy people who Im sure would be happy to review his plans. Even if the club has to pay for peoples time ie a Buckley type review of his thinking would be invaluable. To me this is Carrs key challenge , get it right and things can turn quickly, the list will evolve and cant be changed quicky , but a brand or gamestyle can be launched from 2026.

He wasn't my top priority, I wanted us to talk to everyone available and cast the net far and wide.

But I can fully get behind Josh Carr because he already feels like one of us and not an imposter like Hinkley, and for all of these reasons:

- Kane Cornes, Rucci, Whateley etc. and all the happyclappers will be extra harsh on him because he's not Ken Hinkley.

- He'll get no such protection from the Victorian media mafia that Hinkley enjoyed, because he was a "thug" who played for not the one, but the TWO most evil interstate teams, and never lived, played or coached inside their Mecca.

- The SA media will be extra harsh on him, not only because of his history in Showdowns but because they all loved Hinkley holding us back as coach for so long.

I'd sack Lobbe, Sutcliffe, Hartlett, Williams, Cornes, Westhoff November 1.
Hentschel has been there a long time. Our skill level is poor so he can go too.
I would approach a successful SANFL coach for the maggies such as Darren Reeves.
I'd like Jimmy Bartel as Head of Football. Bye bye Davies!!
Schofield or Dew for midfield / senior assistant.

Hoping we get a Senior assistant like a Richardson and Walsh type. maybe Adam Simpson, Matthew nicks(if leaves). Cornes goes and find new midfield coach.
