Fremantle defender Roger Hayden is recovering from surgery on his left foot that will delay his return until early to midway through season 2011.

Hayden had the operation on Monday and will be on crutches for six to eight weeks.

General manager of football operations Chris Bond said today that Hayden had not recovered as well as expected from a fracture in his foot and that surgery was required.

“At this stage on medical advice, we believe that Roger should be available early to midway through the 2011 season,” he said.

Let's just cross everything and hope that rog is the only injury this pre-season. the difference between a good and bad season can be how many blokes miss pre-season.

Draw the positives - he can be put straight on the long term injury list and if we want we can pull up another rookie. It's looking like the deck is stacked against him for a mid-season return though, especially if he has any more complications.

Just when I was thinking how amazing it was that for the first time ever Roger played a season without doing his hammy.

Why do we get so many foot stress fractures?

Is it just us or is every club getting them and I obviously only notice ours?

And it seems to be only since Webber has joined us that we've had the plague of them?

What's going on?

Petrie, Egan, Croad to name a few

I thought it was 50/50 for Roger playing 2011 before he re-signed for a year. He might not be able to make the team again now but nowing Harvey he will put him straight back in when he is ready. Mzungu just got a break but it was probably inevitable that he take Rogers place anyway.

Roger will be a very handy sub player come late in the year. Imagine having him come in during the 3/4 and being fresh & mopping up across half back. Here's hoping for a full and speedy recovery.

On another positive note - an inspired NAB Cup performance by BBB could see him as our elevated rookie, likewise for Sibbo

I don't consider this a huge loss. He's not a big performer. Inconsistency is as big a chance as a moment of brilliance with him, and we've come to expect more than that from senior players.

Very very easily replaced IMO.

He was one of our best this year.

I hope you're right about him being replaced. I felt we really missed him when he was unavailable this year.

He has the ability to beat his opponent as well as be creative on the rebound (even though he did turn it over with his kicking a bit). Other than Broughton we didn't have anyone that could do that this year. Maybe one of the young guys can step up and fill that role next year? Here's hoping.

I do think we can replace his forward line work with any number of players though.

Wow, that's selling him a bit short. Super creative player when he's on. The most elusive player in our team, can work in a phone box. Great mark for his size and a great playmaker. Has been a real lightening rod for success when he's on.
Granted he started to have a few wtf moments in 2010 prompting me to say to my wife, "I think he has a brain tumour" but at his best he's a superb footballer.

I'm glad you said this at the end of your paragraph. He has as many of these moments as he does brilliant ones. He's certainly worth having on the list, but there's plenty of better prospects out there to replace him.

Opportunity is amarvellous thing. no game has ever been won by the players sitting in the stands.

Tough luck for roger. I'm surprised he played 23 out of 24(rest for tassie hawks game). he usually misses a few games due to soft tisue injuries- maily hammys.

now it opens his spot up- bring on the competition.

I hope Roger makes it back. Wouldn't mind using him in the forward line later in the year. He at least deserves to play again, even if he has dropped off he has still been one of our best players over time. And I think a crowd favourite ... how could you not like him?

I remember the days (not too long ago) when it was "just give it to Roger, for heaven's sake, and he'll sort it out" as the likes of Dodd, Head, etc bumbled their way through the backline. I think now he is now more replaceable not only because of old age catching up, but also because we have guys like Duffield, Roberton and Broughton who can move the ball out of defence effectively. Before it was only Roger, and he seemingly had to take the opposition on entirely by himself. Some people seem to quickly forget how good he was.

The stress fractures worry me as well, I swear we get more than all the other clubs.

Damn, this isn't good news for one of my all time favourites. Must be a serious foot fracture (if it is that) to be out 'til June next year at best.

Yeah, it's a bit frustrating. Balla, Sandi, Mayne are three I can think of getting foot injuries these past three years.

... and a couple more as mentioned. We've certainly had our fair share, but you need to chop Sandi out of that list to be fair. His foot issue was/is plantar fasciitis and is different to a foot stress fracture. ISTR that tall heavy sportsmen who play 'explosive' type sports are particularly prone to it. I know from my basketball days etc. that a good number of taller basketball players have had to deal with it.

... just to clear that one up.
