Needs to be replaced. Hastie is not the answer. Not sure the next Liberal PM is in parliament. Josh Frydenberg come on down but probably too polarising. We are basically Victoria now - one party state

Dutton and Ley are the top candidates this country have for one of their biggest political parties? Really.

We don’t have any actually smart people?
Australia doesn't function like the US so the right faction heavy LNP will continue to fail, and the left faction LNP will continue to fail.

Big Josh appears to be ramping up a comeback to the top on the back of the Bondi tragedy.

Susan Ley can have as many outbursts as she wants attacking Wong and Albo for the lack of emotion and demand a RC on her terms, but she seems to be done. Albo will probably fold on the RC terms but Susan can't be taken seriously when she talks at the moment. Most of the pressure on Albo is driven by the LNP friendly media rather than the opposition.

Cant see Frydenberg or Hastie doing much better. Either way, it's not good for the country to have such a pathetic opposition.

Pollster Kos Samaras outlining why the Coalition is dead in the water and bleeding support from their once steadfast conservative, non-university educated 'battlers' to One Nation. Ley is just the latest and worst in a conga line of culture war warriors posing as Liberal leaders that made it so..

For decades, working-class conservatives voted Liberal on the promise of aspiration, that economic growth would create opportunity for those willing to work. That promise has curdled. Housing is unattainable. Job security has evaporated. The wages of work no longer purchase the life that work was supposed to provide. And for older, non-university educated voters in regional Australia, the situation is starker still. Living standards have been actively declining.

These aren’t people anxious about falling behind, they’ve already fallen behind, and they know it.

The towns they live in have fewer services, fewer opportunities, and less connection to the prosperity concentrated in the capital cities. They did everything the old compact asked of them, and the economy stopped holding up its end of the deal.

For these voters, the Liberal Party has nothing material to offer these voters anymore.

So they double down on culture war grievance instead. And a significant portion of them has responded by abandoning a party they have voted for decades, not because One Nation has a credible economic program, but because grievance politics at least acknowledges that something has gone wrong.

100% "It's a story about broken economic promise."

This is 100% a failure of the free market system.

It is a complete failure of governments throughout the west ceding power to Capital. It is a failure of the collapse government policy and regulation that the free market insists on - an insistence by capital that demands that there is no "governing" at all - and if there must be "governing" then it should be outsourced - an insistence that the market can resolve everything.

Good luck finding a politician that is willing to accept that let alone do anything about it.

The Liberals do not even know who they are anymore and Labor has absolutely zero idea how to achieve anything of note.

Capital has the Liberals and Labor squabbling over nothing of particular importance while we all squabble with each other over nothing in particular while Capital does what it does - hoovers up more of everyone elses money and stuff while we are all distracted with zero regard to the social consequences.

The LNP are worse, but it is a story about about both major parties.

They have abandoned their voters and serve only big business, donors and lobby groups.

Hence why the major party vote is completely collapsing. The Greens benefited, the Teals did, and now One Nation are.

So people register protest votes.

The absolute plainest example of this is TV betting advertisements.

EVERYBODY wants it gone. It benefits nobody. It’s simple and a complete political slam dunk.

Even punters are sick of it. They don’t need it, they know where to go to have a bet.

Yet Albanese doesn’t ban it.

Because he’s completely captured by corporate betting and sports interests.

The voters sold out for big business and donors.

The LNP would take exactly the same course.

They long ago stopped governing for the people that vote for them, and are paying the price.

100% right. Two-party systems the world over have broken as a result of both sides being captured by corporate interests.

History has shown us that populism thrives when democracies fail to adequately support the economic interests of the masses, and that's where our democracies are at.

And the neo-fascists have already taken over the populist movement of the day. Democracy needs to realign itself to the economic interest of the masses and throw off the corporate shackles, or it will die.

I would say the ALP are in a position where they are about to see slight rises in their vote share for the next few years.
As Kos has said in the past, it's all about consolidating the left or right vote rather than big reaches across the aisle.

On the left you have the ALP who have pushed through policies that have real impact on people's standard of living, reduced cost of medicine, more affordable childcare, bringing inflation back to within the RBA target band, protecting penalty rates, stable government.

I work with a hell of a lot of people who typically vote Greens who have seen their collapse with their fixation on Palestine to the exclusion of everything else making them a less inviting option.

This is where the News Corp attacks on Albo have fallen flat, they claim Labor is full of Hamas loving extremists, yet the ALP is the only ones that have stuck firm to a two state solution, not overstepping with either side in recognition Australia is a small player in this issue. The party had to send out talking points to its members in the face of intense abuse from Greens members saying that the government's policy is to support the two state solution as the best way forward in the long-term. If News Corp went hard against the Greens I think they could have wiped them out electorally as it's a plausible line that would have taken hold in the community...instead they went after Albo who is notoriously diplomatic, something Australians appreciate in a leader at a time where they see the bin fire that in America.

The vast majority of the left in Australia would see themselves as somewhat centrist, the appeal of the Greens historically has been their messaging that issues like the environment and housing should be addressed more quickly. Yet as things stand I would say Albo is one or two big policy wins away from consolidating 37+% at the next election. If he's smart he'd ban gambling ads twelve months out from the next election.

Pretty biassed view of the Greens. Are you Albo's Chief of Staff?

I just checked the Greens website. Sure "Free Palestine" gets a mention but your suggestion of fixation on Palestine to the exclusion of everything else is not backed up by the facts. With respect to policy, tax reform, cost of living, housing and climate are all more prominent.

They do have quite a few recent media releases on matters of direct or indirect relevance to Palestine but that's more driven by responses to current events like Bondi and the Adelaide Writers Festival than being a one issue party.

You suggest News Corp is easy on the Greens? Yep Rupert's sure given them an easy ride over the last 25 years. You must be living on Mars.

At least you have the reasonableness to suggest Albo does something about gambling. The major parties have both been disgraceful in their servitude to the gambling lobby.
