goddard gets more ball across HB than swan (nothing wrong with that BTW, but a lot of those can be cheap), swans a much better clearance player, especialy CB clearances. swans a power onballer, much stronger in the contest than just about anyone really (benchpress of 145kg)
swan averaged more
disposals.
tackles.
clearances.
contested possessions.
uncontested possessions.
Inside 50s.
goals are 1 to 0.9 in goddards favour but swan has more shots on goal.
critical errors are 2.2 a peice but swan kicks the ball more often and longer.
GAs are 1 to 0.9 in goddards favour, but the saints have a better fwd line and dont kick anywhere near the amount of points we do, scoring assists im guessing go to swan (without knowing them)
turnovers are 7.2 to 9.8 in goddards favour (but as i said, swan kicks the ball more often and averages more disposals overall), swan also gets more ball in high pressure situations and has to dispose quickly, goddard has the better skill set though.
goddard averages more contested marks and is the better up and over marker IMO but body to body they dont come much better than swan (pound for pound)
very close, both would complement each other wonderfully in the same team IMO, very different players, happy with either, i reckon a better poll would didak V goddard.
didak V goddard

just depends on what stats you value more really.
the stats tell me that goddard is rarely used in the engine, even didak averages more CB clearances, not really sure what to make of that TBH.

If both players were lined up next to each other and I had to pick one to play in my side I'd take Goddard.
The stats make Swan look better, but stats are misleading. Despite what they say, we know from watching the game that Goddard is a far superior kick to Swan and he hurts the opposition more. We know that he is more versatile than Swan, Swan is better purely as a midfielder, Goddard can play forward, back or through the middle at an elite level. Pretty much anywhere you play him he can dominate. We can't say the same for Swan (maybe he could, haven't seen it). Goddard is also a far better contested mark.
These guys were probably 1 & 2 in the comp this year for mine, but I'd pick Goddard, just, based on kicking skills & versatility. You are right in saying they are very different players, one is a clearance midfielder, the other is a utility. Both do what they do at an elite level. However I think someone like a Goddard is more valuable than a pure midfielder.
Didak v Goddard? Goddard 100%. Even the majority of Collingwood supporters would take Goddard over Didak I reckon.

pretty much what you say about goodard you can say about didak, didaks versatile, either up fwd or in the middle, all 3 could play HB, didak hurts teams more than goddard with ball in hand, he's possibly the most damaging player in the comp when he gets it.
back to swan V goddard
as a midfielder swan wins hands down, goddard is more versatile but we dont need swan to play anywhere else (im sure he could play HB/FP if we wanted him to), as i said, look at the clearance rates and goddard isnt anywhere near him and i wouldnt even call swan an inside mid, he's an inside/outside player but clearance work isnt his specialty, also look at the CB clearance rates, those are telling, they tell me goddard lines up a lot at HB, bryce gibbs lines up a lot at HB too, lots of easy ball is won there, rebound 50s also support this.
swans just won his 3rd or 4th copeland in a row, all pretty much for top 4 teams, i wont mention his other awards, goddard's more the hodge type, you put either those boys and tell em to do what swan does and you'll see just how good swan is at what he does.
swan went to goddard after HT of GF2, goddard was given a football lesson!!
swan had 7 disposals to HT and goddard had 19 to HT, swan ended up with 26 and goddard 27, owned!!
If you take Swan out of Collingwood & replace him with Goddard, I'm uncertain we would have won the flag.
Swan was largely criticized for his performance in the drawn GF. In a game that is the pinnacle of contested football, he was the leading clearance winner by 4.
Had a quiet Replay until the 3rd when ironcially, he was moved onto Goddard. He tore the game apart.

Swan was hardly sighted when the game was still in the balance, he only got a run on once Collingwood had the game won. Goddard on the other hand was the only Saint who kept busting his balls and trying to get them back in it.
Hence why he's winning this poll 25>3.![]()

I don't think we really had the game won until Didak kicked that goal.
The contest was still in dispute after half time. That's when Swan was moved onto Goddard after Clint Jones had the better of him.
In the period of when Swan was on Goddard, Swan tore the game apart. As I said, if you take Swan out of the Premiership side & replace him with Goddard, I'm not certain we win the flag.
Hmmm....oh gtfo.
Hmmm....
The one-eyed supporter, they can be either amusing or annoying, never both. You take a swing at Goddard, but fail to mention the "cheap" possies swan picks up in the back pocket.![]()
I think you'll find Goddard is rated as highly as he is because he nearly won a grand final off his own back as well as being a superstar throughout the season. He was much more effective than Swan on Grand Final day. You cannot overrate big game players -Collingwood supporters would have to agree given how they talk up Sidebottom (FWIW i rate him highly also).
