"Statement regarding Colin Sylvia

The Melbourne Football Club late this afternoon was made aware by one of our players Colin Sylvia that he attended the Melbourne Magistrates Court this morning following an incident with his girlfriend. Colin consented to an Order Without Admission of any of the allegations contained in the application. The Club is disappointed that Colin did not advise us of the matter and very disappointed that he has put the good name of himself and the Club at risk.

Colin is a young player, but all players at MELBOURNEfc have behavioural standards to meet and players are provided with plenty of good advice from the AFL, the AFLPA and the Club about their responsibilities and the risks that come with inappropriate behaviour. The Club expects players to be personally accountable for their actions.

Colin accepts that alcohol was a significant factor and is deeply remorseful about his behaviour. Colin will undergo an alcohol awareness program and counselling and has been fined $2,000 by the Club. Colin is under no illusion that if there is a repeat of alcohol-impacted behaviour then he will face more serious action including possible suspension.

While Colin¡¯s girlfriend of two years did not want the court action to proceed, they accept the outcome and wish to get on with their private lives.

The Club and Colin will make no further comment."

Not great from Col, no excuse for that kind of stuff, could have been a much harsher penalty.

Perfect lead up going into a new season.

Also, just on Sylvia. I was at a club called 'Blue' last night, near Crown, and they have a big screen that flicks through photos taken at the club, and guess who was up there? The kid.
EDIT: In fact, go here. No sylvia, but there are other melbourne players, they must've had a night out or something.

Next Blue is the club that Davey also found himself in a bit of strife at

You've got to be kidding me... now they are not allowed to go to Nightclubs?

As for the blue with his missus, i'd hate to go to court everytime I had an alcohol fueled fight.

This whole issue is a disgrace and all of you should get off your high horse.

They have lives too and they are just like you and me.

Was that you in Stanley Kubrick's 2001 Pineapple? Weren't you the ape who discovered that he could use a bone as a weapon. MOST people don't belt their girlfriend's in a drunken rage, and the fact you manage to get yourself into 'alcohol fueled fights' and think nothing of it speaks volumes. Well done to the bystander who saw what was happening and decided to get involved. Lets hope Colin gets the help he needs (and make no mistake ANYONE who hits a woman needs help) and pray that the Big Pineapple remains single.

And could you specify where anyone was up on their high horse stating that football players can't go to nightclubs?

No one here did.

I agree they should be able to.

I couldn't care about their personal lives, as long as they put 110% on the park, that's all i care about.

Nobody really cares about what stuff Kobe does in his personal life since he got 81 points the other week.

That is a pathetic statement.

Heaven help us if we get any closer to being like the USA in that regard.

Well i think we already are.

What is the pathetic about it - I go for my club on the field. After the game, as long as they aren't slaughtering people and dumping them in forests, i couldn't care less.

I have zero tolerance for violence in real life situations, in no way do i condone this kind of behaviour in anyway.

You're naive if you don't think that this sort of crap affects our club on the field.

We've invested the #3 pick on Sylvia, plus 3 years on the track, plus a good salary plus injury managment. Being on the ******** at 4am and hitting your girlfriend won't do wonders for his career, that's for sure.

How do you think his groin felt after he apperantly kicked his girlfriend?
Christ, some footballers lose all their brain cells when they get a jumper.

Not naive, but aspiring for a ideal world. Of course it affects the club, but it doesn't affect the way i look at the player's ability or the club itself.

Yet again, another thing leading into a season after involvement between a footballer and female, atleast it was nothing like the Milne and Montagna incident though.

The club has done nothing wrong, I agree. They didn't even know about it until Sylvia had to go to court! That is just one more mistake he's made.

He may have all the ability in the world, but we've seen too many good players waste their talent and behave like tools. It doesn't look great that he's been struggling with OP for 3 years, is drunk 4 weeks before the season starts and now has this charge to think about.

I really hope he gets the help he needs, and that his punishment is more severe than a $2000 fine. Hopefully this will scare him into pulling his head in.

I dont think it looks to good, I agree that afl players are just like the rest of us and have no problems with them being out and having a big night but I think Col crossed the line. It has prob been blown up but If your an AFL player your in the public eye and have to carefull.

dude they always go there, most footy players do, Danny and Dale run it, same guys used to run Billboards.

most of the melbourne boys I've met out at blue or Billboards, in fact all of them, have been good guys not looking for trouble (even when a mouthy mate of mine tried to have a dip at neitz after we lost that final last year)

Sadly I think it's the issue of Alcohol and footballers that's the problem. I'm pretty Sure Colin wouldn't have done what he did were he stone cold sober and thinking straight. Problem is all these bars and clubs that give footballers free drink cards and a license to get totally smashed.

That's some very kind words celtic, I'm not sure if he deserves them.

I don't think any of us are in a position to judge Colin, and he has denied all allegations.

Not saying he's an angel and that he did nothing wrong, but I don't think it's fair to make assumptions when none of us saw the alleged incident.

He should know better than to be out ********ed 4 weeks before the season starts, that's for sure.

It hasn't even been confirmed that he hit his girlfriend and if he did I doubt she'd stick around!!! The bystander who got involved should be forced to get in the ring with Colin for sticking his nose where it isn't wanted.

What did the bystander do well? Create an ordeal for a kid and a club who certainly didn't need it:thumbsd:

I've had blues with my girlfriend whilst ********ed before, my mates have had blues with their girlfriends whilst ********ed and my old man has had blues with mum whilst ********ed and no one involved ended up at the Melbourne Magistrates Court and in the paper the next day!!!

Mountain out of a molehill:rolleyes:

Getting drunk and kicking his girlfriend wasn't enough, he then kept it from the club until he had to front up to court. What an idiot, did he really think the club wouldn't find out?
If he had told the club straight away, there could have been some sort of damage control. But once it ends up in court, there is just no way you could clear him of any wrong doing.

I'm all for giving people a second chance. He made a mistake (a huge one at that), and it is now up to him to correct it.

As far as I'm concerned, he is a nobody and has a lot to prove. If this happened to a player for another club, all Melbourne supporters would get on their high-horse and call him a weak dog.
Just because he happens to play for Melbourne, doesn't mean what he did shouldn't be taken very seriously.

He should be concentrating on kicking a footy with 4 weeks to go, not women! :thumbsd:

"It is believed the witness, a business consultant, has told police he saw Sylvia appear to kick Ms Whichello."

Sylvia has denied all allegations.

Why don't you believe him? Obviously *something* happened, after all he was in court, but why take some businessman's word over Colin's?

Let's deal with facts only please!

He assaulted his g/f. That isn't a 'regular' thing to do....

My hat goes off to the MFC. Well handled.
