Symonds passed fit for South Africa clash

Australia have received a boost ahead of their Group A showdown with South Africa at Basseterre on Saturday, with the news that their key allrounder, Andrew Symonds, has been passed fit to play in his first match since tearing his right biceps on February 2.

Symonds, who has been steadily working his way back to fitness during Australia's three weeks in the Caribbean, described himself as "95% fit" after coming through his final practice session at Warner Park. "I wouldn't go out there if I didn't think I could last a full 100 overs," he said.

Symonds' return means Australia have dropped the man who came in to replace him, Brad Hodge, who was named Man of the Match after scoring a century in his last outing against Holland. "There's an argument that Brad Hodge should be in the side," Symonds said. "He's played very well and is very unlucky to be dropped.

"I'm feeling for him right now, because it's happened to him before. But that's the way it goes. I spoke to him earlier and he hasn't given up by any means. He'll just have to wait and if he gets an opportunity, he's the perfect man to come in and take over a batting role."

The other alternative would have been to remove the spinner Brad Hogg, a man whom South Africa's stroke-making top-order are sure to target given Warner Park's small boundaries, although that decision would have put too much of a burden on Symonds's own offbreaks. Though his batting has looked pretty uninhibited in the nets, his bowling and throwing are the areas that have not yet been adequately tested.

"Today, I threw very firmly with relatively no pain at all," Symonds said. "The only thing I haven't done is had a full game and match-fitness is probably the only thing that is an unknown. The adrenalin of being back out there in this competition will probably be enough to get me through it.

"I guess we're expecting a good old-fashioned Australia-South Africa showdown. There will be no love lost. I think it's a game that everyone is looking forward to watching. We're certainly looking forward to playing it. It's nice to play against the stronger sides. We've had a couple of games when we haven't been pushed or tested, so now it's really time to see where we're at."

Australia 1 Adam Gilchrist (wk), 2 Matthew Hayden, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Andrew Symonds, 6 Mike Hussey, 7 Shane Watson, 8 Brad Hogg, 9 Nathan Bracken, 10 Glenn McGrath, 11 Shaun Tait

Dropped Clarke?

People seem to forget that over more than 100 games, Clarke has one of the best averages and strike-rates of all-time.

Yes, let's drop him for a bloke who's played a few games and went minnow-bashing last game.

What a brilliant idea.

Im all for a fully 100% fit, in form Andrew Symonds replacing an in form Brad Hodge.

However wat we do have is a 70% fit bloke with out being able to perform one of his major assets: fielding cos he is gunna field at second slip! and another one of his handy assets in bowling. Plus his biggest plus his batting, well he hasnt played for six weeks and is playing against the no.1 team in the world.
I was under the impression that Symonds would miss the early games but would be back to 100% come South Africa or Super 8 stage. It appears that we picked him all along on the knowledge that he would only be around 80% fit at best. Very disapointing. Keep Hodge in the side!!!!

Symonds said he was 95% fit. Hes a better batsman, bowler and fielder than Hodge anyway.

Symonds said he was 95% fit.

Like he's going to say anything different. "Yeah, I can hardly throw, have to field in the slips because of my weak arm, can't bowl and haven't faced competitive bowler for almost two months. Other than that, I'm 100%."

Panic move by the selectors, nothing else.

Good on Roy for recovering so quick, but once again Hodgey has been robbed.

In great form and IMO the key to us retaining the cup.

When will the selectors start picking the side rationally instead of with the heart. There is a long history of matey selections that is rotten to the core.

It would actually be a bonus for Australia tonight it Haydos' toe is re-broken or Robot does his hammy again. We would have more chance of retaining the cup.

I can't see this ending well for anybody involved. When Symonds gets dismissed for a duck and doesn't have any accuracy with his throwing in the field, will people still think this was the right move?

Hate to see him come back early and worsen the injury. I know he'd be keen to play but since we have made it through why not rest him for this match with view to playing in a more important one when he has complete fitness!

You're slsectively not including two matches where Hodge failed.

He was recalled to the Australian side on 19th January 2007.

No. I am completely correct.

Hodge since recall: http://statserver.cricket.org/guru?...edhigh=;csearch=;submit=1;.cgifields=viewtype

Hayden since Hodge's recall: http://statserver.cricket.org/guru?...edhigh=;csearch=;submit=1;.cgifields=viewtype

I have the actual stats to back me up.

Thank you for playing.

No you are selectively including 1 off games, his current stint in the side starting with the game at the G v NZ, he wasnt in the side for the previous game so obviously wasnt his current stint  He was recalled for the NZ game at the G

Give it up Eddie, Haydens stats are better. It should be Watson that is dropped anyway.

Just out of curiousity.... who has been the best player at the world cup in your view?
