T20 World Cup Qualifiers

Sixteen teams vying for two spots in the next T20 World Cup.

I don't see why all nations don't have to qualify for it (the full members get a gold pass to the WC).

In any case, today's results so far:

Afg d. PNG by six wickets
Nam d. Ire by four runs
Italy d. Oman by nine wickets
Ugan d. USA by four wickets

Namibia are a side on the way up. They'll qualify for the 2015 World Cup. Scotland a huge chance as well IMO, along with Ireland and Afghanistan to be there.

Scotland d. Kenya by 14 runs
Nepal d. Hong Kong by 28 runs
Netherlands d. Canada by 42 runs
Denmark d. Bermuda by 7 wkts w/ 5 balls remaining

I suppose the Denmark and Nepal results are upsets of sorts. Canada have been nothing but horrible for the last 2-3 years.

Or at the very least Bangas and Zimbabwe. Ireland and Afghanistan have shown a fair bit of promise not to be in with a chance against those 2.

It is very difficult to 'towel up' a team in a T20 match, and given Afghanistan is ranked 10th in T20Is, and Bangladesh is not ranked at all, I doubt that would occur.

Bangladesh are actually a pretty handy team, just very inconsistent.

Having said that the Afghani's beat a pretty handy Netherlands side (minus ten Doeschate) which has some Australian state players in Swart, Cooper, van der Gugten and a county player in Kervezee.

Some players of interest... Di Venuto only made 6, Geraint Jones made 39, Tom Cooper made 7, Michael Swart made 22.

Good day for the "Australian's" playing for the Netherlands yesterday. Michael Swart hit a 50, then took 1/8 off 3 and Timm van der Gugten destroyed Bermuda's lower order taking 4/22 with all wickets being bowled.

Went today and saw both Abu Dhabi games. Uganda were actually pretty decent against a Namibia side who has been very impressive in this tournament so far, I think they've beaten Kenya and Ireland or something? Not sure.

Also Italy's batting was quite impressive, even with DiVenuto failing.

Just saw Alex Obanda bat up close for the second time. He's a very solid talent. If Kenya qualify for the WT20 I hope he takes the opportunity to showcase what he's got.

Him and Duncan Allen are an excellent opening pair.

Showed a bit of ticker in the 50-over World Cup last year if I remember correctly. Collins Obuya is also a solid no.3 (98no against Australia) but probably not a T20 player.

Would love to be seeing some of these matches, lucky you.

Yeah, Collins is quite a handy all rounder. With the talent Kenya have you'd think they'd certainly be WT20 quality, but it might be tough for them to make it from here. The the gradual improvement though of Ireland, Nambia, Holland and Scotland and the emergence of Afghanistan it looks as though we've got a strong set of associate teams these days.

I am very lucky. I live five minutes away from the stadium, and it's free admission.

In Ireland's defense, they were beaten (?) by a red hot Namibia team and the Italian side I saw the other day against Kenya are no easy-beats. I'm sure they'll find their form in the preliminary stages later on. Italy put away a Ugandan side that's actually been pretty good (outplayed Nambia for 80% of the match the other day), so it's great to see a big improvement in Italian cricket. DiVenuto may be failing with the bat (agreed, that's quite embarrassing) but perhaps his professional presence is having an impact on the squad.

Shame I won't get to see the rest of the games, there are no matches beyond tomorrow in Abu Dhabi and I'll be out of town for the next couple days. Has been great fun to watch so far though.

Ireland appear to have been saving their best performances for when it matters - crushed Netherlands yesterday, and Namibia are 2/20 after five.

Restricting the red-hot Namibia to 6/94 in a Twenty20 is a crazy effort. Namibia must've batted pretty poorly though.

So I think the winner of the final goes into our group, with the West Indies, and the loser goes into the England/India group. I hope we draw Afghanistan, not because they're easy beats (hell they're probably a better Twenty20 side than us), but because we've never seen a game against the Afghanis before.

same happened a couple years ago, afghanistan qualified for the final and won the final on the same day iirc

karim sadiq hitting a six off the first ball of the innings and later getting bowled off his helmet, interesting to say the least

and yeah, i got all excited after afghanistan beat namibia because i thought that was it, they're in our group...i forgot there was another match for them to win

Haha yeah. I think they'll be a bigger challenge than Ireland to be honest though. No disrespect to Ireland intended, Afghanistan are just on fire.
