Tabs was in our forward setup at start of year and I thought his efforts yesterday were full of merit.
Also he played in both finals last year(not that well) but he was exposed to finals pressure. We all know how well Alex Pearce has adapted to the AFL in his games so far down back and up forward.

Do we go with Pav, Mayne, Sonny, Balla, resting Ruck & Tabs/A Pearce up forward.

it all depends if Dawson comes up whether Alex Pearce is considered down back. But then again he may use Ibbo as his third tall defender and not expose Pearce to finals intensity??

They have Franklin, Tippet/Pyke, Read and Goodes with height to consider.

I'd be more comfortable with AP.

I think you'd get a much more consistent effort from him whereby Tabs would possibly give a couple more highlights but the low lights would be more regular.

I also don't think the finals experience will help Tabs. He'll always be susceptible to brain fades regardless of experience unfortunately.

Why can't we have Tabs in the forward line and Pearce in the back line. Both are going to be good players but in their respective positions. Pearce looks better back and Tabs looks far better forward.

Tabs, has the finals experience from last season as well as presents better as a natural forward. Plus Alex Pearce is in his first AFL season, is battling soreness as well as with limited pre-season. We have plenty down back. It is not the time to blood inexperience in the season in which we are vying for the flag.

Tabs was crap in finals last yr. Always gets subbed out and hasn't been tearing it up in WAFL as he should do if he's as good as you make us believe. If AP is battling soreness then why was he played yesterday? He's like everyone else this time of year I suspect, a little bit sore. Didn't we not play 11 on Saturday for various reasons? Soreness being the main reason. I think you'll find Alex had limited pre season in his first year but did full one this year. And I suspect Heeney won't play if going by your analogy that it's his first year and you don't play inexperienced players in finals. I reckon there's a chance neither Tabs or AP will play.

The decision on the second ruck/forward is a critical factor here. If Griffin is out we don't have pressing options, and one I think should be considered is that Dawson follows Tippet into the ruck, with A Pearce moving from forward line back onto Pyke. I also see Pearce having a bit more roaming ability which could be useful and create mismatches. Just a lot more versatile.

As a chance to put a knee into him too?

Pearce is a mile ahead as a forward, and light years ahead as a back.

Taberner is a WAFL player at best.
Well he actually just showed that in a relatively unsupported role as a tall in our forward line he had something to contribute against a decent AFL side. And he still has heaps of development time in him. But if your player evaluation skills are really at that level then you are wasted in whatever occupation you are currently plying

Lyon, earlier in the year admitted that Taberner was getting a game by default, simply because he was a tall forward.

Not a ringing endorsement.

The main reason is that Lyon prefers Dawson, McPharlin and Johnson in the back line. CHF is the only spot available.

To my mind it depends on what we expect from them.

If it's marks then I back Pearce to take more grabs in the same situation as Tabs.

If it's registering scores then I think Tabs has that covered but if half the chances aren't marked to start with and half the marks turn into shots then its actually elite so we are miles off that.

The general efficiency going through each player isn't too high but Alex, in my opinion, retains possession more.

Not sure on either but we need to pick one.

Both in the side increases our forward/defensive capacity but reduces our midfield potency.

Could work against the Eagles midfield but not Hawks.

Doesn't matter if Tabs doesn't mark, as long as he's bringing it to Walters & Ballaz at ground level.

There's a fair chance we'll play neither. That would be a mistake but it's a mistake we have made plenty of times before so I wouldn't be too surprised if it happens again.

I'd like Tabs up forward as a foil for Pav, but only if conditions suit - would rather him sit out if it will be wet on Saturday.

And given Luke Mac and Johnson will be back, I'd prefer A. Pearce down back instead of Dawson. Not a Dawson hater at all but I think Pearce is the way forward. Although for this week in particular it's a tough call, because Dawson has done very well on Tippett.

Poor game by Alex Pearce on the weekend, seems to be really suffering from first year soreness.

So from a strength point of view Tabs is probably the better bet.

However, if we are talking a talent comparison then Alex is miles ahead. Just a much smarter footballer who knows how to get those clever knocks to advantage. Alex seems significantly better below his knees as well.

So for mine, Alex Pearce if he is fit but Tabs if he is not.

On current evidence it looks like Alex is sore and Tabs would probably contribute more, I hope I am wrong.

If Pav retired after this year, which is a possibility, and going by our previous history of recruiting Talls, we should
be happy that we have Tabs on the list.
You can change the names to Elvis, Pearce and at least we have several key position players to choose from.
Several years ago we had no depth in this area at all.
This draft, free agency period, we need to be ruthless, and is arguably our most important recruiting drive.

I reckon both might play with Griff out and Clarke out of favour. Sandi to ruck 90% with support from Tabs. Or potentially go smaller.
