We are now 7/7 and our destiny is in our own hands. I believe one of the biggest areas we need to look at is our intent. Some weeks we are sharp and others not. On the weekend we were terrible for much of the game and when things began to flow played the last quarter the way we should play every week.

I believe that one of the major stimulants to how we ended up playing was Judd. This is obvious but for me it was his 2 last quarter tackles that were the most inspiring. I believe he set the tone for others to dig deep and find intensity and integrity. St.Kilda AND Geelong play with old fashioned honest integrity. They seem to have a passion to do the hard things and place tremendous pressure on their opposition.

On many occassions Carlton and Judd show little passion in putting pressure on their opponents. Against Freo many players just sheparded their opponents when they had the ball instead of really pressuring them. Betts is an example of a player who does continually pressure the opposition and looks like he enjoys being out there. So many other Carlton players have Nick Stevens disease where they are in the zone sometimes but seemingly disinterested other times.

Think in general that Carlton has a higher degree of self absorbed personalities in their side than other teams. As such our players are more likely to be lacking in passion and when this is the case they become undisciplined. Also as part of discipline I think it is relevant to bring up the right foot kicking or lack thereof with Grigg and Austin. Cannot understand how the coaching panel allows a player to not develop both sides of their body.

We have the list to go into the finals and be competitive. However until we find the secret to playing with consistent intensity we are going to keep experiencing some very lack lustre performances.

I actually put it down to youth.

Watching the game on the weekend, what stood out was the fact a lot of Carlton players did not want to take on the opposition player when a Freo player was in possession. A little too much waving arms in the air and filling space rather than playing the man, and applying physical pressure.

Apologies to Judd, Fev and Eddie who were outstanding in this area.

I remember the Richmond game, round one - we were relentless with pressure and tackling. Every game we have lost this year, this pressure has been absent for large portions of the game.

As we build confidence you will see more Carlton players running the lines when in possession, and taking on their man when they have the ball.

We'll get there.

There's no doubt that Judd definately lifts the team and there has been no better example of this than the weekend.

His sprint across the half back line in the last quarter to tackle a player shows that he is definately back to his best. The ground he made up in the time that he did was amazing and back to what we witnessed in his glory years at the Eagles.

The point I'm trying to make is, yes Judd is back to his best but he can't do it on his own.

Gibbs and Murphy were outstanding on Sunday and we are starting to see Grigg get back to peak fitness as well.

Having T-Bird back in the backline settles us and Carlos up forward adds another dimension.

Guys like Joseph and Army have been good as well and have really earnt their spot. They are important, as is Aussie and Hammer because every game we get into them this year is a bonus.

We need to keep the intensity and pressure up and play consistent footy for the remainder of the year to really give our boys the confidence to go into the finals and maybe even cause an upset or two.

It's up to them.

If we didn't have Judd I'm ssure we would be lucky to have won 4 matches. So, IMO we haven't come very far at all. We got Judd and we started to win games.
But it is a dangerous situation we are getting ourselves into.
Unhealthy reliance on two players...Judd & Fevola.:(

That shytes me to no end! I hate that crud... I just sit and fume, yell out.. "Just f'in move forward and force the player to make a decision.. don't give them time to think!"..

I blame the Hawks and their disgraceful cluster for that... they won the premiership with it and so many teams trying to copy it (like us)... when we try to emulate Geelong by moving the ball fast and trusting ourselves we are brilliant, but FFS that dumb-arse arm waving has to go!

May be right about youth but I think much of it is club culture and leadership. Glad you mentioned the waving arms thing. This was the main inspiration for this thread. I felt like throwing a brick through the tv when I saw players doing this.Such a bullsh*t thing to be doing.

Agree. We do too much corralling of opposition players while waving our arms instead of looking to force the mistake. We are scared of over committing and being sidestepped and that might be fair in our defensive 50 out on the boundary line, but we do it all over the bloody ground. The opposition still get their disposal away, the ball is still 40 metres plus downfield and our defenders are forced into 50/50 situations.

If you are midfield and the opposition has the ball running forward, sure it increases their chances of a successful forward delivery if they get around you, gain time and space to spot up a forward, but the flipside is that if you force a turnover, you generally have a chance to run it up the other end because they are out of position.

I understand we would rather them go to a contest than find an easy target but I think maybe we have taken this too far and have gone too conservative without the ball.
