He said as much in his OP. We were always going to throw in some bait and see if we get a nibble.
 
If we got him I could see him being used up forward, purely because that's the area we most need an injection of class.

MJ has been impressive so far this year, if he can actually be consistent we may not need an upgrade.

I do question paying though the nose for a great utility, buying in a mercenary makes the other players feel shortchanged with their contracts. I think cap space is useful when you have an improving young team, let's take players that want to be here for success, not cash.

Yeah I'd like to see us use FA in a Swans type manner - target guys who are undervalued at their clubs and who fill a need for us.

But there might be a window of opportunity there with Goddard. With his former coach here and the Saints looking at a rebuilding slide down the ladder we might be able to get him here for market value instead of a Cloke situation of throwing inflated figures around just to try turn a player's head.

If we could snare Goddard for 800k (which I'm thinking is fair market value? maybe slightly over) it would be a massive coup.

Just because you can get someone doesn't mean you should. I'm fairly comfortable with the state of our list except for our forwardline, and if we are going to throw 600 - 800k for a player, it should be at a key forward.

So MJ has been impressive this year in 7 games but hasn't been consistent?

MJ has played very well for us this year and I'm not sure spending the amount of money it would take to get Goddard should be put into a position where we already have a player.

Goddard looks awfully slow tonight and bothered. He is good and no doubt would add to our side but I'd rather someone younger.

He's been inconsistent in past seasons, impressive in a couple of games this season. I agree with you on paying for a player for a position we do not currently have a player. Goddard has been an excellent player, but I'd prefer they say 'no thanks'!

Chris Tarrant is a free agent. His an All Australian forward. We should make a play.
 
For example, if 800k is being offered to lure Goddard,then the 1mil offered to cloke is to low IMO. Cloke is easily worth another 300-400k a year more than Goddard, especially in our case.If possible we need to offer cloke more than 1mil. a year.

He is 26 years old, oh and its not like you can grab a 21-22 year old free agent.
 
It amazes me that so many posters on this board complain about our players being underrated outside of WA and here we have a genuine star of the game being disregarded as a better version of a player that before Rd 1 people were astonished that he even got a contract extension!
