Our backline looked totally dysfunctional this year and it wouldn't have got any better with the same personnel in KP roles, nor can it get much worse without them. Best to reset it entirely now. Stay away from Mitch please.

There are a couple of different scenarios they are going to have to cater for.

The first is an opposition which is kicking towards a dominant big forward (or more than 1). For these games they are going to have to come up with a gameplan which can make sure the opposition doesnt get easy possession through the midfield, and which can free up a smaller back to come over and help out the way Hawthorn have used Gibson over the years. I reckon the main dominant forward sides are Adelaide and GWS. The Crowds midfields isnt going to be that flash, so I can assume that the gameplan will revolve around overpowering their midfield with our. The GWS side has potentially a very good midfield (maybe even better than ours) and if they can work us out in the midfield then we have major issues and trying to close down 3 big forwards is going to be a hell of an ask.

The other scenario, however, will be the scope to slip a far more mobile defensive lineup behind out mids and essentially run, run and run some more - and that isnt far removed from what the Doggies did this September. It will require a mobile game plan of course, and will require a lot of work on disposal (by foot certainly) out of defense and through the midfield - and all without stopping to think about how our forwards could stuff things up.

But those days where we are being cleaned up in the middle and the opposition is kicking to big forwards could be horrifying. But if we get a little slick with ball movement those days may be compensated for by days where we are running rings around oppositions - seeming as though we have about 15 midfielders firing.

Ball movement down back is going to have to come real good. I cant recall Keefe impressing me with his movement by foot skills, but I do recall him as evolving into a man who could scream at other defenders to get them into order.

The one thing that sticks in my memory with Keeffe is him having absolute and total meltdowns in several games down back.

Based on what I've seen he has precisely zero ability to lead or organise a backline as a cohesive unit.

Can we wait until Brown actually decides he wants to leave before saying he's gone please?

As far as I can tell, all I've seen is that North are chasing him and he's excercising his right to consider offers as a free agent. That doesn't actually mean he's gone. In fact I'd be surprised if he left unless he got a ridiculous offer that we wouldn't match, in which case we'd get decent compo.
Well it's appropriate now.

You were right with the OP, kind of (I didn't see it at the time). I don't believe tall timber, or lack thereof, was actually our biggest problem down back this year. You are right with this post too. Outside of Reid there is not much to get excited about in terms of KPD. Keeffe is a risk worth taking but not something we want to rely on paying off. We need to invest in some tall talent but I can't see it happening this off season given our lack up forward. Reid or bust.
Thanks least you've understood my frustration many many months ago.

Yes. Isn't it yours?
no its not, and never has been. l have always believe there is a chance the following year and l have as long as l can remember.
l dont know what the plan is, it's not plain yet from allen, except to say not to many are safe.
l will wait and see what trade and draft picks we get before l can make any informed judgement
on our chances is
it's a wait and see

He needs to stay and become a backman with us.

He's not staying. There is no possibility of him staying. Everyone really needs to understand this. He's not staying!

Cheers mate. You get a hard time around here generally, though you do fish for it, but this thread in hindsight was prophecy and should silence a few posters who scoffed at your opinion.

I admire the positivism of many posters. It has gone from we don't have a problem to Brown, Frost or Marsh being all we need to Keefe with Scharanberg/Goldsack as KPD when required. If the events that have transpired, with Marsh, Brown and Frost all out the door, according to the greater plan of the CFC then we need a new planner.

Exactly. So many crying over spilt milk.

Hey guys as i mentioned earlier. So far we have released bit of salary cap space but we dont have to draft picks to trade for a top line key position defender like a Mcgovern from West Coast or Talia from Adelaide either one would be ideal but no can do at the moment.

At the moment we really have 1 kp defender available......Keefe 204 cm but hasnt played for 2 years and to a lseer degree Ben Reid who is serverly always underdone with continual re occuring injuries......we can rely rely on these two we need depth.

Goldsac can play on talls and smalls but has big trouble on the gorilla forwards like Paton,Buddy, Hawkins

We really only have a few picks left we need to secure WHE brown and Daicos

Witts, Cloke ,Williams will be moved on but these players will gives us picks to secure the above 3 mentioned.

So we need a few stop gap kp backmen who wont cost us much whos available ? Mitch Brown but injury prone, Sam Reid also injury prone and will cost a bit,Eric Mackenzie he would do nicely also Tom Longergan not happy with what Geelong have offered him 1 year deal.Lonergan will suit our needs to

Another very good rebound defender but not kp is Corey Enright.I would go for either Mckenzie or Lonergan and get Enright on a 1 year deal give him an assistants coaching role

Also with Witts going we need another ruck option in reserve if something was to happen to Grundy

These are our best options i believe

Your thoughts?

You need the pieces to reset with.

Enright - NO

If we are going to go into a season light on in one area due to players wanting to leave, I'd prefer it to be the area we were hopeless in anyway.

Didn't the Bulldogs get Hamling as a delisted free agent? What about Fletcher Roberts in the PSD, or a 23 year old in Marcus Adams. Those guys may want to leave as well but they'll just reset it again the same way and that's what we should do too.

We don't need to trade in a star defender or get a top 5 pick, we just need to be astute with our drafting and we will be fine. We can put together something that will not be any worse than what we had and could potentially be a lot better.

Aparently on the table for the right price.

Wonder if this is where Greenwood comes in to play.

Port want a 2nd round pick might be our 28 plus Greenwood for Talia.

Port wont get anything near that because Talia plays for the Crows...

If we land him hed be handy for Swans games inside info

They will if we get Adelaide involved in a multi club deal.

Adel are after Gibbs

Carlton after 1st rounder.

Port looking to trade out Hartlett.

Ahh Gotcha

Only catch there is nobody wants Hartlett for the money he is on .

Can totally understand the Crows wanting a clean break and distancing themselves from Talia though.

Need a good experienced key defender desperately now that Brown, Marsh and Frost are gone.
