It wasn't pick 8 mate, I believe it was pick 10 who they then used on Ben Reid, who is one of the most promising young defenders in the league and together with Tarrant and Maxwell form probably the best defense in the AFL. Ably assisted by Shaw and O'Brien of course.

Yes, it ****ing stings :( Hopefully trades like that are a thing of the past.
It was pick 8, unfortunately.

2006 was slated as a super draft.

Players Freo have on the list from that trading and drafting period: 0.

Yes if we had kept all our toys instead of trading with the big kids we could have kept Medhurst & Polak, drafted Reid & Rheimers (for a start), can't be bothered looking through the rest of that draft it hurts too much.

I love how in draft talk season Collingwood fans were saying "he wouldn't even make our best 21". He is a terrific defender and still has the ability to go forward when needed ans kick goals. He has matured as a person and I'm still shattered he left Fremantle.

I'll be happy for him though if he wins a premiership. I'd rather he didn't though ;)

Any of Reid, Brown x 2, Riewoldt, Tippett, Dawes, Goldstein. I mean, if key talls were so important to the side, a veritable feast was on offer there.

Wasn't that the draft we picked up Clayton Collard as a second rounder?

Collard was a very talented footballer. On football ability alone he probably could've gone in the first round. It was all the off-field stuff where he let himself down.

Still dont really a problem with Tarrant, he didn't do us any favours when he declared it was the pies or nothing but other than that, he came over, fullfiled his contract and didn't complain, in the process turning himself into an AA defender. He made it very clear he wanted back east after 09 but he was told that he had to finish the last year of his contract and he did.

Croad never did jack while playing for us and maybe that was just bad luck but at least Tarrant gave us some value for money. It'd be nice if every person that came to Freo fell in love and tattooed the anchor on but this is professional sport and not kids picking mates in a backyard.

tbh with his injuries I'm still not convinced that Tarrant moving on was bad for Freo. Elvis and Grover are in great form and we need to be preparing younger players to establish themselves in the 22, not holding on to a backline that could retire in one off season.

This :thumbsu:... You could tell Tarrant had a gratitude and respect for our club, in the end he just wanted to return to Melbourne and saw out his contract. Sure he would have been happy to stay had he not longed for home...

On free agency, I'm a little worried it'll actually hurt WA clubs. How many Eastern state players would be willing to relocate to WA only to travel every second week if offered the same money at any other club? Will more Victorian drafted players be looking to chuck a 'Chris Judd' once the uncertainty of being traded is taken out of the equation? Wouldn't pretty much everyone want to run out for Collingwood in front of 50k+ screaming fans every week?

In one way, Tarrant did do something for the club. By taking the opportunity to reinvent himself as a defender, and turning his game and career around, he helped build Harveys reputation as a coach, and helped stop Fremantle's trading and player development look completely woeful :o

Always thought he was a bit of a tool but was an important player in his last two seasons.

Imagine adding Barlow, Morabito and Tarrant to last weeks 22.......

He certainly didn't help us get a good compo deal/trade, so stuck it up to us then too.

I never understand that view point, what did you want him to do differently ?

I'm pretty sure Croad scored more goals in 2002 as a 21-22 year old than Tarrant ddid in any season at Fremantle.

Don't forget All Australian James Frawley :(

Although early speculation had us taking Jetta with pick 13

Faulks was drafted in 2006 :p

People have short memories. I can distinctly remember the jeers and boos that Croad and Tarrant and McPhee faced, the latter been the mentally tougher. There was an article about Tarrant breaking rules by buying the paper and reading it in the car with a fresh latte or whatever.

Point is, the player cops these decisions and they are entities that abide by business rules. Supporters are emotional crackpots that speak words of stupidity at times. A player out of form that gets picked will get groans, a player coming back from injury not hitting their once high standards will get booed. Example after example after example.

We need to loosen up, enjoy the ride. Players are discarded and find form. We get them so what. Is Griffen a traitor? What about Lower?

Sure, I was disappointed Tarrant left, but we did well enough in the end with the trade back and probably got the best out of him. He is injury prone afterall. Good luck to him. Good luck to any WA players that find their way home at a suitable price.

Great post. Pretty much my thoughts. :thumbsu:

You would like to hope that we have seen the error in our ways now with these kinda deals.
I would find it hard to believe that Harves would ever want someone at the club that didn't really want to be there.

I think after we develop Pitt, he will want to go home...not basing this on anything except gut feeling

As much as your argument is logical, supporters are irrational and i disagree.

I'd much prefer to see Fremantle win every game for the next 5 years than a Gold Coast or GWS get up and win a flag. Even though the latter is better for the AFL i support my team. Similarly Griffin is a hero and Tarrant is a traitor. I'll hate someone for leaving our club but to get a player in a similar fashion is enjoyable.

I couldn't care less about other clubs and i'll be booing Tarrant everytime he gets near the ball when he's playing us. By leaving us in the circumstances he did, he's improved Collingwood's chances of winning a flag and dented ours. That is reason enough to dislike him because i support Fremantle and ultimately want us to win a flag. It's compounded by the fact we paid him the bulk of his career earnings and gave up significant picks to acquire his services. Screw him and every other player that crosses us. The more players willing to screw other clubs to our benefit the better.

I do agree with you on 1 point though. I don't like the jeers for players coming back into form.

What I look for when a player leaves, is how the current players react to that former team-mate when it comes time to shaking hands after the match. Is it the customary handshake and not much else, or is it handshake, a bit of a chat and/or maybe a pat on the shoulder etc. If all seems well between the Freo players and the former team-mate, than that's good enough for me.

... He made it very clear he wanted back east after 09 but he was told that he had to finish the last year of his contract and he did...

This is how I recall it too. With hindsight, we should have traded him then when he had more currency and no PSD threat.

Croad copped a much harder time of it from the media, and he left before his contract was completed allowing us to trade him for a decent pick, pick #13. I think the difference between how they handled it was marginal, and if we had actually recruited a decent player with the pick (we got Schammer 127 games) it would not be a massive issue. Tarrant showed zero interest in us as a club when trading came along, and basically shafted us to go home to the team that shafted him in order to line up for a medallion at the end of the year.

We got Ryley Dunn (Pick #10) out of the Croad Trade v2.0.

Wasn't that the draft we picked up Clayton Collard as a second rounder?

It was, and after we snared 3 fairly highly rated players with lowish draft picks there was suggestions that the club should be looked into because we may have been draft tampering, Collard being the poster boy. How did we get him that low down in the draft?

The reality is, our drafting and development was sub-par, along with our trading.

We trade Croad for pick 10 in 2003 which was Ryley Dunn :(

However if we picked Mundy at 10 instead of 19 it would've been a great deal.

I hate looking back at our list in the early/mid 2000's. There is just so many freaking what ifs.

Pick 10 it is then, which at the time was Hawthorn paying beyond Croad's value, and helps soften the whole Croad trade. That Dunn did nothing is irrelevant and just points to the lottery of the draft. Ray, Bradley (pre-reincarnation), Tenace and Dunn the stand-outs* for how difficult it is to get it right in drafting. All looked very plausible. Decent picks and good selections. Very low returns.

* actually just had a look at the draft and there are so many failures that it is not fair to name these players as standouts. Murphy says hi.

The Trade was Medhurst and Pick 8 for Tarrant
