Thought I'd start a thread for the Tour Down Under 2011 as news starts to surface:

Cavendish coming to Tour Down Under

Tour de France star adds more lustre to sprint battle
The opening round of next year's ProTour, the Santos Tour Down Under, received another boost overnight as organisers announced that Mark Cavendish will ride the 2011 event.
Following the news that both Tyler Farrar and defending champion André Greipel will compete, Cavendish's appearance is a massive coup for the South Australian capital of Adelaide and Australian cycling fans.
It will be the first race for Greipel and Cavendish to race each other on opposing teams, after the German announced his departure from HTC-Columbia this year in search of leadership status at Omega Pharma-Lotto.

HTC-Highroad for Santos Tour Down Under: Mark Cavendish, Bernhard Eisel, Bert Grabsch, Matt Goss, Hayden Roulston, Mark Renshaw and Danny Pate.

It will be interesting to see Matthews have a go against the big boys, wonder how many stages it will take for Brown to crack the sads that his team mate is faster?

One I reckon.

Matthews would be my early selection for the Stirling stage (assuming it still has that steep ramp at the end). I don't think they have changed that stage finish.

Edit:

They do have that same stage. Need to see the list of other riders though but that stage finish suits him. It also could suit Richie Porte too.

Team RaioShack for Santos Tour Down Under: Lance Armstrong, Markel Irizar, Sebastian Rosseler, Jason McCartney, Gregory Rast, Ben Hermans, Manuel Cardoso. Team manager: Jose Azevedo

Looks like McCartney got the chop for McEwen.

McEwen suits Radioshack. Falls in their criteria of old farts. :thumbsu: If you're in your late 30's and want a contract, RetirementShack is the place to go. :D

Look forward to seeing Haedo match it against the best sprinters in the world. With it being the start of the season, he has a good chance to finish high in a couple stages as Cavendish and co may not be in good form.

The only way Cavendish doesn't win is because he's not in form being the start of the season.

With that said, he is targeting these early races to get points for GB for the World Championships so he has more than 2 men support him on a sprinter friendly course in Denmark.

So he will be out to win what he can in January. I would peg him for stage 1, stage 2, stage 4 and stage 6. Stage 3 is an uphill finish in Stirling - could be okay if he has a solid leadout. Stage 5 is Willunga. 4 stage wins would be a target for him I think. Whether it's good for the overall, who knows

I have only ever been to one leg of the TDU in its history and that was early on before it became a World Tour event and only because it started at Port Adelaide near my house.

But I will definitely go and see Cavendish ride this year. I couldn't care less about Armstrong, but as soon as I saw Cavendish was coming down I got excited. Watching some of his stage wins over the last few Tour de France's has been great to watch. Got me interested in cycling again.

I love how he is so appreciative of the work that Renshaw and the boys do for him. He always acknowledges their hard work.

It will be great to see Cavendish in action live - going to be a great race!

I always go to stage 6 and the the Cancer Council Classic - pre race, race as well. Always try and get there in time to get a seat at the start/finish line but never manages to

GREAT careers are drawing to a close at the Tour Down Under.

When Lance Armstrong, Stuart O'Grady and Robbie McEwen roll their wheels on to the start line for tomorrow's Santos Tour Down Under prologue, the curtain calls on their stellar careers will edge a little closer.

Armstrong, O'Grady and McEwen, legends of the sport, will be out to impress when the gun fires at the Cancer Council Classic in Adelaide's East End tomorrow afternoon.

The trio's farewell - certain to be in front of hordes of passionate cycling fans on January 23 when the Tour comes to a close - is expected to be one of the most emotional moments in Australian cycling history.

Armstrong, one of the greatest athletes on the planet, already has declared the Adelaide race will be his final ProTeam event and his last professional race on international soil.

O'Grady and McEwen, who also are in the twilight of their careers, have said they want to continue racing "as long as the body is willing"- but they are much closer to the end of their racing days than the start.

Time is running out for the pair but their lives on the bike have changed the landscape of Australian cycling, perhaps even more so than the pioneering feats of "Skippy" Phil Anderson. Anderson turned the cycling world upside down after becoming the first non-European to wear the yellow jersey at the Tour de France in 1981.

His courage had broken new ground and appears to have had a profound influence on the careers of O'Grady and McEwen.

Retired South Australian rider Patrick Jonker, himself a veteran Tour de France competitor and winner of the 2004 Tour Down Under, believes O'Grady and McEwen's eventual exit from centre stage will be the end of a grand period for Australian cycling.

"When this last generation finishes, it will be the end of the golden generation of cycling," Jonker said.

"Once Cadel Evans gives it away, that will be it. He's the one we thought could win the Tour de France.

"Very clearly he's the greatest ever tour rider to come out of the country, even more so than Phil Anderson.

"I think 2011 is the last time for a long time that we'll ever get close to producing a Tour de France winner." O'Grady tasted his first serious road win when he claimed a stage in Spain's Vuelta a Murcia in 1996 after winning silver at the Barcelona Olympics on the track four years earlier.

O'Grady then owned the Tour de France's yellow jersey for three days in 1998 before he claimed the first Tour Down Under general classification in 1999.

The parochial South Australian managed to fight the Hell of the North -- Paris-Roubaix -- and won in 2007, becoming the first Australian to win a classic.

McEwen is the fastest cyclist on the road with more than 200 career wins.

He has claimed 12 stages in the Tour de France, 12 stages in the Giro d'Italia, 14 stages of the Tour Down Under, is a five-time Paris-Brussels champ, Scheldeprijs Vlaanderen winner and has stage wins in the Tour de Romandie, Paris-Nice, Tour de Suisse, Eneco Tour and Tirreno-Adriatico.

While McEwen and O'Grady may not be part of the roster in 2012, the pair has forced the pending birth of Australia's very own ProTeam.

On Monday, Australian cycling history will be made when Green Edge Cycling is expected to announce it will be applying for a UCI ProTeams licence.

"Robbie McEwen is the greatest sprinter Australia has ever produced," Jonker said.

"Robbie had very little lead-out train with little help and assistance and he won races with just sheer power.

"Stuart O'Grady is the only Australian in history to win a monumental classic.

"Will we ever see riders like this again?

"We've been spoilt with these guys and what they've left behind - their legacy - will be an Australian ProTour team. They'll leave us with a team on the world stage. That golden generation did that."

Armstrong and McEwen i dont really care for that much but when Stuey retires I am going to be a mess :(

IIRC, Uni-SA teams of the past dont strictly qualify for entry since the last upgrade in tour status.

So they have to appear as a sort of quasi national team to get a wildcard entry.

Could be totally wrong, but I thought that was the gist of it.....
