I'm bored so I thought I'd look at a team I'd like to see rd 1 with an eye to who the selectors like. Obviously early days and we still need to see what happens in the preseason.

B: johncock rutten Stevens
HB: otten Davis doughty
C: tambling Vince mackay
Hf: Knights henderson danger
F: porps Tippett walker

Ruck: Jacobs Thompson Douglas

I/c: reilly, vb, moran
Sub: sloane/Martin

Near miss: callinan, sellar, jaensch, symes, maric

Could see vb and doughty swap especially with vb captain.
Chf could be either of Tippett, walker or hendo.
2nd ruck went for Moran just ahead of seller. Maric misses out.
Personally I would prefer Martin over doughty, or otten instead of Stevens and Martin to the hbf but with doughty that's two short hbf.

Depth: Armstrong, petrenko, mckernan, gunston

What it shows is that at full strength it's a pretty good side but issue is if we cop more than 6 injuries and not to our best players

summary

I have Tippett at CHF and Walker at FF and both Knights and Hendo using their huge endurance at HF running their oppenents into the ground....

callinan makes my round 1 side, i just sense that he was drafted to fill a noticable gap and if he has an injury free pre-season this may be enough to give him first crack at that small forward role.....

some may be  that I have left out Radar and he is desperately unlucky however I can see VB, Doughty and even Sloane sharing the defensive midfield duties

otto is my super sub for round 1, perfect role to ease him back into the fray and I sense that if SMACK can have a big pre-season and hit some early form in the NAB cup the club seems as eager to get him into our best side.

maric, radar and jaensch head my emergencies pushing for selection, however don't count out petrenko, symes or even a young smokey over pre-season to push his name in front of selectors

B. Johncock Rutten Stevens
HB. van Berlo Davis Tambling
C. Mackay Douglas Vince
HF. Dangerfield Tippett Knights
F. Talia Walker Porplyzia
1R. Jacobs Reilly Thompson
IC. McKernan Otten Doughty
Sub. Henderson

EM: Sloane Callinan Jaensch Martin

Only surprise Talia starting, to ease him into the side and give the forward line some size. But could be replaced by any of the emergencies.

I'm toying with the idea of moran at chf, to play a similar role that robran used to. Ie straighten us up and provide a contest. His height would be a concern for opposition teams especially when you factor in tippetts height. He is reasonably agile as well. He could also ruck from centre to half forward and allow Jacobs to play one kick behind the play like rehn used to. The alternative is sellar in that role, I just don't know if he is up to it which is a worry considering how long he has been around.

I was reading Rendells comments in our year book and he thought shaw would take a hbf role. He also said he thinks Jacky could still make it and will keep an eye on him, eek!

Making some massive assumptions on form over PS and NAB games. Don't agree with Tex at FF Sloane Ranger, much better suited to roaming CHF. Tippett will play the goal line 35 metres out for a majority of the season with a crumber around him.

Callinan, Tambling and possibly Jacobs will be in the side round 1, most others such as Radar, Symes, Doughty and Stevens will be there. Maric won't give up no 1 ruck without a fight and in round 1 I would expect him to still be there.

B Johncock, Rutten, Stevens
HB VB, Davis, Otto
C D-Mac, Vince, Tambling
HF Knights, Walker, Danger
F Porps, Tippett, Callinan

R Maric, Thompson, Douglas
I, Doughty, Radar, Smack/Sellar/Moran
Sub: Sloane

Emg: Jacobs, Jaensch, Hendo, Martin

What will be good however if injuries are kept to a minimum over the PS is that competition for spots will be at an all time high and this should help immensly with how Round 1 plays out. Martin, Jaensch, Hendo, Sloane all very unlucky, but this could be the theme of the year. Not everyone will stay fit so they will get their chances.

...hoping for a repeat smashing of the Hawks 20 years on.

I am comparatively a Moran optimist. He could provide a bit of x-factor for us and works perfectly with the sub rule. His future lies as a KPF/2nd ruck imo, remember those 4 goals he snatched against Carlton?

However, I'd like to see him in the pre-season before I even consider putting him anywhere near my 22. Hasn't played footy for about 18 months.

Pretty much how I would have it SC. Interesting to see who we would match up on Buddy & Roughead.

Love to see Davis on Roughhead as roughie regularly troubles truck. Davis woudl give roughie a bath I think with the way he currently plays.

That leaves Franklin.... I'd be tempted to try Otten on him... Bock still leaves a hole of someone with the size and pace to play on guys like franklin (not that there are many in the comp that match up well against buddy love)

Now I'm just putting this out there for discussion but one thing I've been wondering about the way we line up is how our defence will be structured. All year in 2010 we only ever played three talls, so does anyone else think we won't play all of Rutten, Davis, Stevens and Otten in the same defence? I know the mobility of Otten allows him to play on both smalls and talls but in defence he would still be classified as a tall. I can't quite remember, but did we ever play the four talls in 2009 when we had a fit Otten? This could very well mean more midfield time for Otten (should he be fit and ready to).

If Rutten isn't going to take one of th two key forwards, who is he going to take?

To anyone who has left Doughty or Stevens out of the starting 21...stop dreaming.

I agree

both stevens and dogga had a strong finished to 2010, have been included in our leadership group and considering the loss of experience I can't see Craigy leaving them out of our best 21....

unless injured both dogga and stevens are absolute certainties

No it was still three talls, Otto, Bock and Truck..good point. Stevens was played more as a forward. Otto would probably be in the mid mix as well as that was the plan before he was injured last PS. I've got both in my back six and in the 2011 best team thread I think I wrote something along the lines of fit Otto may mean Stevo doesn't get a gig in the back 6. Now he is in the leadership group hard to see him not getting a game every week.

I'll live with that as long as Symes doesn't get too many games. The review on afc.com.au a while back said he didn't have the best of years, + we can't have too many clanger kings in one team. Now hes out of the leadership group his spot is up for grabs.
