Even if there is no future for Shannon Byrnes at Geelong, it does no harm to beef up his trade value. He is a premiership player after all.

Byrnes has had his chance, 50 of them in fact. Stupid decision, he's had the chance to play out of his skin for his spot and he's failed to do it. He is 24 years old and has shown no significant improvement so far, in fact he seems to be getting worse. This is what should be his peak.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Almost lost my tea when I saw the team, not because Shannon was named but because I just knew there would be pages of the usual claptrap on here bagging the guy.

Can't believe some are saying give Djerrkura a go [ hardly touched the footy last week ] or Hogan; what's the bloody point, when Chapman and/or Wojcinski return they'd be straight back out again, and if we happen to have an injury [ touch wood we don't ] leading into the finals we want someone playing now who will have a realistic chance of keeping his spot, and that player is Byrnes.

Varcoe deserved to go on his form over the last several matches and Shannon was the obvious replacement.

I'll give a few reasons:

1. By not playing a Davenport or Hogan now, you absolutely rule out the possibility of playing them in the finals. The only chance we have to see what they're like at AFL level is now. There's nothing to lose by doing so.

2. Rewarding performance. Shannon was woeful in the VFL at the weekend Davenport and Hogan were two of the better Geelong players on the day. It sends the wrong message to promote players who play poorly in front of players who play well.

3. We know what we get with Shannon. We could not play him between now and the Grand Final and if we really wanted to we could bring him in for the big one because we know what we'd get from him. I'd argue that playing him now actually provides no benefit. Is he going to improve his kicking? Is he going to gel better with the team than he already has after 50 odd games? I'd argue no on both counts.

Meh, I dont like Shannon in the team but ultimately the guy was BOG in the magoos and I think preserving a culture of 'work hard and you will be rewarded' is more important than the extra two efficient disposals we get from keeping him out and Varcoe in.

I'd argue "there is no possibility" of them playing finals, so bringing them in now is pointless, we play our next best/experienced player and at the moment that's Byrnes.

Given a full list to choose from he won't play finals either, but if we have an injury it's down to Varcoe or him, and right now Varcoe's form doesn't warrant him getting a game.

Same answer as above really.
Of course he's not going to improve his kicking [ for goal, his field kicking is okay ] but if there's a chance someone is needed come finals it's best to get game time into him now IMO.

I see where you're coming from, what gets me fed up is the constant, repetitive stuff that comes up from a lot of posters every time he's named in the side.

Um, do you mean WOG? Because he was far from BOG.

The only reason there's no chance of them playing finals is because we don't know what they're like at AFL level. By not playing them we're ensuring that will remain so. The alternative is to take a look now and potentially give yourself another option in the event of injury.

Oh, and Shannon's field kicking was he worst thing about his game at the weekend.

OMG are you people still arguing about Byrnes????:eek: I am totally flabbergasted, he wears his hoops with pride and doesn't deserve this. He is not the best player in our team sure but not everyone can be Joel Selwwod. Shameful all of you.
