50/50 for me. He has to at least be serviceable for rest of year to be retained as back up player. If he fails like he did last week then I think he might be gone, but he should be better for the run and perform better this week.

He was really really bad last week. One of three things is happening here:

1. The Eagles quite rightly don't see value in giving developing players who they think have a future, one game.

2. Wilkes is standing in to aid mckenzie's development. Mckenzie's best development path right now if to spend some time in WAFL so Wilkes is just standing in

3. Mckenzie is injured and a risk so Wilkes is standing in as backup

4. Wilkes has been given one last chance to show he's worth keeping on the list

I have my money on 2 or 4.
For a bloke playing his first game at AFL level this year Wilkes did well last week. He was amongst it from the start and did a number of 1%'s that we were all applauding McKenzie for earlier in the year. Sure he made a few mistakes but cut the bloke some slack - he's not the only one doing that in our team this year!

I liked the look of him - a big body with mobility. I reckon he showed enough last week to persevere with him on ability alone. :thumbsu:

And there's a good reason that was his first game.;) He had a string of 12 or so games last year and I think the coaching staff marked him as a backup. A few injuries to the team and some decent form for Claremont and he's getting a run. I'd be very surprised if they have him earmarked for a big future. He'll have to pull one out of the box to do that I think.

Wilkes didn't lose any of his 1v1 contests, and not a 100% but pretty sure he didn't have a goal kicked on him

18 disposals(7 contested), 7 marks(2 contested), 5 1%er's, 5 tackles with 70% efficiency. Not a bad effort for his first game back.

Talk about unsolicited hate... I do forget the general level of intellect on bigfooty though and see how supporters latch onto commentators opinions because they struggle to form their own

Hi Mrs Wilkes....

Honestly, you have absolutely no idea. He was abject. As usual he had his 3 or 4 brain farts that lead to goals. The funniest part was the first time he was in the action he fell over - which is a classic Wilkes trait!

My father was in Melbourne on the weekend, so my brother (a Saints fan who lives in Melbourne) took him to the game. Spoke to my brother on Sunday, he enjoyed the game - one of his first comments was "who is that big clumsy guy, umm, Wilkes?, he's hopeless, seems like a Richmond type"...

Wilkes is ordinary. He played poorly on the weekend.

sTeeL, our resident bogan, disagrees..... fair enough, I can't think of one insightful observation he has ever made on this board, but fair enough.
:)

Yeah, I guess it's best not to judge Wilkes too harshly just yet, we'll see how he does on the weekend and for the rest of the year.

No doubt the coaching staff are playing him for a reason, but whether that's to increase his trade value or to develop him a backup role is uncertain at this point.

Why?

After about 5 AFL pre-seasons and his dozen or so games last year he is exactly the same player he was last year ...tries hard.... modest mobility .... average decision making and skills AND prone to 3 or 4 complete brain farts every week ... same as last year ...

Good WAFL player based on size and modest (at best) AFL player. Depending on who we trade may be useful as a depth player who covers injuries .... at best ....

At what point can we start making judgements on players? I mean he has been at the club for 5+ years.

Basically just saying we should let him adjust to AFL pace again. Trust me, I'm not a fan of Wilkes either, but if the match commitee sees fit to play him, we might as well wait and see if they're right to do so.

Spangher and McKenzie are injured, right?

Id rather talk about tanking then have a discussion about either Wilkes and/or Priddis. God forbid we ever have a thread about how we are tanking because we aernt playing Wilkes and/or Priddis... wait we did! lol

What is with Wilkes hair btw?? does the bloke own a brush?

Apparently they are.

Mackenzie has been struggling physically for a month or so.

Wilkes just seems to be the new breeds Trent Carroll. :p

And boda, I agree on the hair ....

Spose I could be like you and want to trade away every player who isn't starting 22 for an 18 year old kid. It's more like at worst Wilkes would be a solid backup Mr Glass Half Empty ...

Or like anyone with a clue. As soon as you establish a player is unlikely going to be up to AFL you need to have a look and see if he's needed as a backup, if not, turn him over. Get another late pick and repeat the process until you get one of those rare late picks who steps up.

If Jordan Jones plays good footy in the WAFL then I think Wilkes will be turned over. I think he's only playing as a backup.

Not sure if I should post this here but didn't really want to create a new thread on the subject.

Is anyone else nervous about which Eagles team mindset will rock up for the game? The one that has a fair dinkum dip against sides ranked higher/better than them or the one that falls to the absolute sh!tty class of the teams lower/worse than them?

Except for the Saints game we've had a real go at teams who you would think could've sunk the boot in and came away with at least a decent effort. The games where we've been considered better than even (or even money) at pinching we have played absolute shit football (I include the Collingwood game because at the time they were in hole and had so many major outs we were considered a decent chance to topple them, we ended up playing some f***ing ugly football that night).

I'm just a little bit nervous about this one because we should be too strong for North at home.

Very nervous. Haven't been in this situation for a few years, so hoping we win it. :thumbsu:

Your comment has substantial merit. North are coming over after flogging the Tiges last week and we have preceisely 2 weeks of ok form. We arent good enough to beat sides by just turning up and if the players have got even slightly comfortable we could have an issue.

North have some players who can cause us problems and McIntosh is one of them....

I am hopeful but far from confident that we will win. Our best should be fine but we are only 3 weeks removed from the Freo game - serve up that tripe again and North will win by 5 goals.

Absolutely.. just about everyone of our wins has come about because the other blokes didnt show up till half time. And allot of our losses have been due to not kicking straight or fading for a period and allowing the opp to get back into the game.

Worsfold said it well (paraphrased) "they know how hard they have to work in games during this stage of there development" meaning we aernt good enough to win on pure talent alone yet and require a solid 4 quarters v any team (bah Melbourne).
