IMHO I would now cut and run for season 2007.

Now before you all go " every game we play we should be in it to win it "..ofcourse you are all correct .

But my thoughts are these....

1/ We will not win a premiership this year

2/ Apart from those already on the injury last, we are playing with several senior players who are obviously being hampered by injury...
Goodwin....Burton to name just 2.

So lets say from now on any player who has a niggle ( eg. our skipper ) is ordered to rest for the remainder of the season. Even give a rest to some of the older guys so they get a real chance to recuperate before the pre-season.

3/ Let the young blokes like Gill, Griffen , Douglas and many others stay in the side and really show us what they have.

4/ Get a couple of good draft picks, even a pre-season draft if its worth it.

Enter into a new pre-season with most of our list completely refreshed and biting at the bit, we have had a good look at some of the lads waiting in the wings, we get back some huge names and zero in on 2008.

Thoughts ?

I would assess who will and who wont be on our list next year. I think when you look at the injuries you need to look at recovery time and medical recovery time

Is it worth resting Burton for 4 weeks if the 8 weeks he has off will be enough

If it is time to send Rutten and Goodwin to get knees cleaned up then wait till after the Port game.

My thinking is that we rest Reilly and bring in Pfeiffer. His form is good in the SANFL and Reilly is struggling. I do think we still go for wherever we can finish but the urgency isnt there as much. Go for the 8 but dont hurt the long term prospects for 2008

Agreed

Lets put Roo in cotton wool for the rest of this season and let him have one more shot at it with a full pre season under his belt. he can relinquish the captaincy and just play next year while mentoring the new captain

Bring Griff back in and rotate he and Maric through the forward lines and backup ruck to Huddo

Leave Gill in and see if he can get some confidence with his kicking

Try Perrie up back for the rest of the season and see how he goes

Put Johncock into the middle for some game time there

Rest Reilly until he is 100% fit

Any player who is not 90% or better should not play.

Leave Douglas in for rest of season too

Drop Doughty

Put Mattner on a wing, or don't play him

Massie's confidence is shot- you would think his time is about up

anything else ive missed?

We should be aiming to beat Port next weekend. The last thing we should be doing is tanking a showdown!

If we are no chance in 2 weeks time of making then, I would agree we should be looking towards 2008.

At least then we can have SOMETHING on them ;)

So leave basically the same team in that has lost 6 of the last 8?

Port played a very young team at the end of last year and beat us. I think people fear the youth.

What I'm saying is that we should be waiting til we are out of the finals race before we make mass changes with a view to 2008.

As I mentioned in another thread, I would be making a few changes this week. eg. Pfeiffer in for Massie, Vince/Porplyzia in for Mattner.

Yeh, I think I misunderstood.

Still, I think the inclusions of Pfeiffer (I'm going to have trouble with that for years), Porplyzia and Vince wouldn't make us a worse side. In fact, it may make us a better one.

Agree with this Kane. As much as Rucci and Port would love us too play kids this week, we have to play our best 22. Can't gift our mani rivals 4 points and confidence leading into finals. If anything, I would like us to try and touch them up abit heading into their finals campaign,, ala Hudson, Trent H.

I was at that game and we were flogging Ports young kids like a demonmonkey.

Then Hentschel went down with a knee injury so sickening bad the crowd was stunned, everyones heads all dropped as they watched this top young guy driven off the field with an injury that looked like he might not walk without a limp again let alone play.

Ps, those 20-30 Power fans down on the boundary who laughed and jeered as he was driven past in the stretcher, I hope you all get ass cancer.

Try all the young kids by all means, but in my mind its because we need to find replacements for the Fab 4 sooner than later. The problems from this year stem largely from the constant Chinese water torture of injury after injury to key players distrupting our lineup and system. We are left with playing players out of position to cover gaps.

Having said that, the seasons now shot, so lets find out who can play and who cant.

I’m sorry but when I hear people saying “let Ricciuto have a big pre-season so he comes back firing for 2008” it screams of delusion. Don’t you remember you lot were saying the same thing about his 2007 pre-season? Ricciuto even said he was in great shape and ready for a big season, and look how it’s panned out…

His body is in tatters and he should retire at seasons end.

Yeah, my gut feel sadly is that this is Roo's last season.

If so, I hope he can get back for the last few games to lead his side.

I agree but to be honest, I just can't see us beating Port. They are 2 notches above us at the moment and they would be licking their chops at the thought of putting a final nail in the coffin for our finals aspirations.

Port will rip us a new one IMHO so I am thinking if giving these youngsters a tase of it in the showdown would do them any long term good in their development. Craigy has a bit of a tendancy to debut players in showdowns (van Berlo, Maric, Douglas??) so it wouldn't surprise me if someone like Pfeiffer or maybe even Sellar came in this week.

I think you might be being a little pessimistic there Stiff. While we've got no points to show for it, we haven't been terrible in the last two weeks. We've come up against two teams who've played out of their skins due to different, highly motivating factors and we've been far from disgraced.

How confident are we talking - "dream final" confident or "Port don't lose finals" confident?

:thumbsu:
Lets hope their players are just as confident. I think its going to be pretty wet this weekend, we have to hit their kids like have never been hit before.

I agree with Kane and the rest, make a couple of changes this week. Pfeiffer deserves his spot and Porplizia is the crumber we need.

If we lose that game, then pull up stumps and mend some sore bodies.
