Test Cricketers Stats - Win %, Loss %, Draw % and W/L Ratio

I have been slowly building up spreadsheets to calculate the win % and loss % of first Oz cricketers and then all nations' cricketers after an article in The Roar by their stats guru about 3 years ago, about the winningest Oz cricketers and found that there was no easy way to find the data on publicly available cricket websites, for all Oz and international test players.

The once free Cricket Archive website run by many of the official statisticians of national and state/provincial/county bodies and people who work for broadcasters might allow you to find this info via a query, but as its been behind a paywall for about 4 or 5 years, I don't know if they provide this info, but I suspect that is where Jarrod Kimber got his info from for the video I have linked below.

They do have a free website with basic info, and at this link you can see the list for;

Test Players Records

Back To: Records->Test->Overall

These links show players who have 30+ wins, losses and draws at the individual links. This was my starting point 3 years ago. Cricinfo's, Statsguru Query lets you list players by each nation for, wins, then for losses and then for draws from 1 to the highest for each category, but that is a slow processing after dumping the data into spreadsheets.

Jarrod Kimber between the MCG and SCG tests put up a video linked below, discussing the Winningest Test Cricketer and showed several graphs including 2 - one by win percentage and another by Win/Loss ratio for players who have played 50+ Tests.

I was able to reconcile his graphics from my spreadsheets for both lists, so I thought I should do if for players who had played less than 50 tests and have nearly finished between 30 and 49 for most nations.

I have a list of wins, draws and losses and their percentages and their W/L ratio for the 233 Oz test cricketers who have played 10+ test.

10 tests was the median number of tests played by Oz Test cricketers when Nathan McSweeney was the 467th Test cricketer picked for Oz last year v India. Ie its the mid point, as 233 have played 10+ and he was the 234th who had played between 1 and 9 tests.

Ok it wont let me cut and paste the info like prior to the Big Footy upgrade, so I will paste screen shots from my spreadsheets.

This is Kimber's video from the other week.

I have added the SCG Test win for Head, Labuschagne, Starc, Smith and Khawaja, but left them in same order as pre the Test as the list is reconciled to the Jarrod Kimber video. Kimber stopped at Desmond Haynes, and I have included those after Haynes down to a 50% win record. The SCG Test was Test #2616, if anyone wants to up date this down the track.

I have used data from several sources so that's why sometimes I have full first names and sometimes just initials and surname and sometimes just surname.

Alex Carey at 48 Tests will enter the list between 5th or 8th placed if he plays in the 2 tests against Bangladesh in August in Northern Oz and Oz win 1 or both tests.

Edit: After 2616 test 324 players have played 50+ Tests and 71 of them have achieved a Win % of 50+%.

Oz dominates this list with 32 of the 71 players and they have had 57 players play 50+ Tests.

England only have 6 of their 73 players who have played 50+ Tests make the list.

The West Indies have 9 of their 38 players who have played 50+ Tests make the list. All from the 1977-95 era.

India have 9 of their 38 players who have played 50+ Tests make the list. All of them played the overwhelming majority of their career. or 100% of their career, after MS Dhoni was appointed captain.

South Africa have 12 of their 26 players who have played 50+ Tests make the list. All of them played the overwhelming majority of their career, or 100% of their career, after Graham Smith was appointed captain.

New Zealand have 3 of their 25 players who have played 50+ Tests make the list. All current or recent players - Nicholls, Latham and Wagner.

Pakistan's highest win percentage player is Mohammad Hafeez who has won 26 Tests from 55 Tests for 47.27%

Sir Lanka's highest win percentage player is Samaraweera who has won 35 Tests from 81 Tests for 43.21%

Test Cricketers who have played 50+ Tests and have a W/L Ratio of 2.50 or better.

The Aussie players. Head and Labuschagne have the SCG win included, but left in the same order as Kimber's graphics.

11 players + Mark Taylor = 12 are from when they played the majority of their Tests between 1995-2007, when Oz knocked off the Windies for #1 status, and 2007 is when Warne, McGrath and Langer retired and Oz won 3 ODI World Cups and lost 1 final in that period.

2 from today's era, Head and Labuschagne

1 Hussey played the majority of his cricket in between these 2 eras.

4 from post WWII and played with Bradman ( inc Bradman)

1 Wally Grout played between mid 50s and mid 60's.

The West Indians have 10 players - all from their dominate 1977-1995 era.

They didn't dominate winning as high a percentage of tests like Oz has since 1995, but their loss rate was a lot lower as teams fought hard to draw matches against the Windies, especially on the sub continent. Plus they never had a world class spin bowler to take advantage of all the scuff marks their bowlers made, on day 4 and day 5 pitches like Warne and McGill and now Lyon were able to take advantage of. They had 29 consecutive series where they didn't lose, but had 9 drawn series in that stretch.

Having said that, spinner Roger Harper who played in that dominate West Indian era and was 12th man maybe 30 times, has the best Win % and Win/Loss ratio of any West Indian who has played 19 or more Tests.

The other nations - 9 players - 5 from England, 2 from South Africa, 1 Indian and 1 Pakistani. Apart from Yadav, who played between 2011-23, the other 8 players are from eras where lots of draws were common.
