Why do you rate Hussey ahead of Maher? They both average around the 40 mark in shield cricket. And I think Maher's recent form - in Australia - has been far superior.

Hussey would be a better option both Long Term and in terms of reliability.

Got another one for you. He's also 16, watch out for Marc Murphy. Has Dean Jones written all over him, averaged over 60 with that bat at U16 Downling Shield, and was just chosen for the Victorian U17 Team to travel to Perth for the Aussie Championships.

I would be surprised if he eventually didnt get a game for Australia, he is a talent I have seen very few of, so watch out for him come maybe...06-07 possibly.

What grade of Premier cricket is this guy playing now? Watch out for him in 06/07, you are suggesting he is gunna go from Dowling Shield, to Premier 1sts, to State 2nd XI, to FC, to Test cricket in 3 seasons. This kid must be able to play.

Tasmanians get forgotten so easily - this guy will open for Australia A in 3 weeks IMO. A year younger than Hussey too.

I really, really doubt that.
He scores are not all that great this season or any other really

2006

Test side 2006 (assuming S. Waugh's retirement is used as a spur for renewing the side).

Hayden
Dighton
Hussey
Ponting
Clarke
Gilchrist
Clingellefer
White
Lee
Innes
Rofe

- Hayden will stay in the side until he retires.
- Dighton is a solid contributer.
- Hussey will get his chance and has to bat high-up the order.
- Ponting can drop to 4 to add stability to the line-up.
- Clarke is the heir-apparent.
- I can see Gilchrist playing for a couple of years as a batsman, especially if he has any leg / knee injuries as he gets older.
- Clingleffer gets the keeping spot.
- White is more of a batting all-rounder, but makes the batting line-up incredibly potent.
- Lee has the golden ticket. He should be the leader of this attack.
- Innes deserves a chance.
- Rofe is a fine bowler.

The above side is light-on for bowling, to be honest. Clarke the only batsman who can roll the arm over(with any success), but there are only three front-line quicks. White is a good bowler, but has a lot of responsibility placed on him.
Without the exceptional skills of McGrath, Warne, McGill and Gillespie I could see us struggling to bowl-out teams.
To this end, I could see Dighton losing his spot for another bowler / all-rounder. It depends on how good White is. The all-rounder spot would be Watson or (from left-field) Jon Moss. The bowler would be Wright / Noffke.

2nd XI

Maher
Katich
Love
Marsh
Hodge
Watson
Haddin
Hauritz
Bracken
Wright
Noffke

These are the next 11 in consideration (unless the use the 2nd XI as a proving ground for young talent, as opposed to older players).

I've stuck to players with established 1st class credentials, but could see someone like Mitchell Johnson, or Adam Crossthwaite (sp?) bolting into consideration.

Well done BT.
Great write up - don't agree with it all - but still very good.

Another name for you in Theo Doropoulos - Young bat from WA who like Crosthwaite and Ferguson has been around u/19 for a couple of seasons and has shown good first grade form in Perth.

I saw Doropoulos score a huge century for the Australia u/19 side last season.

A very attacking innings. He pulled and swept magnificently. But he strikes me as a bit one-dimensional in that regard - didn't see many shots that weren't through the leg side. Plenty of room for development I guess.

Martin Love
Matthew Hayden
Ricky Ponting
Mark Cosgrove
Michael Clarke
Simon Katich
Adam Gilchrist
Brett Lee
Shane Warne
Brad Williams
Paul Rofe

Next in line:
David Hussey
Cameron White
Ashley Noffke

May need to play a batting all-rounder who bowls medium pace instead of Cosgrove (Watson/Carseldine/Thornley/Cleary/Worthington) as the pace attack's a bit thin without Waugh and Martyn as backup.

Another good youngster would be James Harford. Is about 18 and has a tonne of talent, was captain of SA under 16's I think a few years or at least one of those underage teams...He'd be in contention for Aus under 19's surely.

*C. Ferguson
B. Schlicker
J. Pratt
L. Oswald-Jacobs
M. Cosgrove
M. Littlewood
+M. Crook
C. Bailey
M. Cleary
D. Francou
S. Tait

No bias.

Thunderstruck: Harford is a potential U19 candidate, next year, I would think. If Lachie Oswald-Jacobs keeps up his form he's a shoo-in, as is Ferguson, obviously. I'm also expecting Mark Littlewood to crank it up a notch with the bat and bowl. Excellent player. Cullen Bailey also, if he can actually get some overs.

I know both Harf anjd ossie....generally at school ossie dominated bowling and played some great games with the bat lower down the order, basically all-rounder status...he aint bowling very much atm, at grade level or under 19's I dont know why...injury?? Yer Harf is still young, I think he is being swapped around in the batting to give everyone a go...IMO he tends to get out early or go on to make a solid score...he is pretty short tho, about 5ft6or 7.

OJ doesn't bowl any more... I'm sure he could, I don't know the reason why, but he doesn't. Probably because he's elevated his batting considerably, that his bowling wouldn't be up to scratch for "all-rounder" status at the level he's playing (A grade).

Harfie will probably get a go in the middle order at some point, but with Pratt and OJ making runs it'll be tough. If he batted at 3 or 4 for the entire series he'd probably deliver a century or two, but as you said it's hit and miss. SA's problem is that it has 7 or 8 genuine middle order batsmen, with only 1 full-time opener (Shlicker) and 1 part-time opener (Pratt). So you've got those 7 or 8 blokes fighting over the 3, 4 and 5 positions.

A question for everyone - why do we assume that Matt Hayden will still be around at this time (around 35) and basically none of that age of the Australian team will be. Surely Martyn, Langer and McGrath are as fit as Hayden......

I dunno, but I do get the feeling that Hayden will be around for quite a while.

Especially cause there isn't much pressure coming from the opening batsmen.

Added the fact, he's generally recognized as the fittest guy in the Australian team.......

I would be suprised if he wasn't around in 3 years, and I would even say it's not out of the question he'll play as long as Tugga did.

Ill take a stab:

Hayden
Hussey
Ponting
Katich
Clarke
Watson
Gilchrist
White
Lee
Gillespie
Noffke

12th man: Cosgrove
