Myself, family members and a number of Lions supporters at work have been discussing what could of happened between round 4 and round 5 2010, to bring on such a turn around in form.

What we saw on display against Melbourne was such the polar opposite to what we did against the Bulldogs, it really makes you scratch your head.

One or two players having a bad day is expected, but a whole team!

So i am asking the BF Lions family if you have had asked yourself, "What did happen between round 4 & round 5".

Brown injured, thats what

IMO Brown was injured late in the Bulldogs game in round 4, carried the injury into round 5 where:

he couldn't turn properly
his agility was poor
he struggled to kick very far

the powers that be in the club then run him into the ground until, after weeks and weeks of denial, finally confirmed he was indeed injured and would be out 'indefinetely'

Browny is our best player

He was looking sensational in the first 4 rounds

he should have been rested for 2-3 weeks until 100% after round 4

just my opinion as a physio and a proud Lion supporter who felt terrible to see our champion run into the gound

We beat the Dogs by 4 goals in Round 4

We lost to Melbourne by 8+ goals in Round 5.

So are we arguing that we became a 12+ goal worse side from one week to the next due to Brown becoming slightly injured???

Sorry...I don't buy that.

The performance against the Dees was abysmal.....we looked complacent, disinterested and totally out-coached to boot.

If we can't lift when our captain (who was obviously out of sorts) is not dominating, then questions have to be asked about the resolve of the side.

That smashing at the hands of the Dees is where the rot really set in.

If we had gone down by a goal or two and fought it out to the death, I could have lived with that...................but 50 points to a side that couldn't beat time for 3 or 4 seasons!!!

Something went horribly wrong in that one week and it wasn't just Brown's injury

The team didnt want to play in a shocking jumper in front of the Vic Lions supporters...:thumbsu:

So it was the jumpers fault and the people that made that decision to change.

After that Demons game, it was clear that we hadn't 'improved' from previous Melbourne outings and would struggle to win any games away. I may have even posted a comment to that effect. It was back to the bad old days pre 2001 ( well pre mid season 2001 ) where it appeared that, unless the opposition fell over, the team just couldn't muster the interest in actually competing with any of the intensity that seemed to come thru' the TV from the Gabba. And JB was clearly injured.

Another long season beckoned for Melbourne based fans - and so it came to pass.

We showed what we could do in the Collingwood game, I thought we had turned the corner. But it just got worse.Almost got over the line after the shocking start ,against North. Once Brown was out of the side with his injury it was like all the heart had gone. I don't understand why.

Agree. The game plan was exposed for mine as was the inability of the players to rise to the occasion and show maturity when challenged.

I agree with this as well.

I think we were completely shown up by North Melbourne in the first half and we looked as if we'd come down with an overconfident mentality after beating Collingwood and therefore didn't put the required effort in.

The subsequent loss by a point (or whatever it was) after having got ahead totally shot our confidence and you could see that the game overall frustrated many players (an example was Black cracking it at the umpires).

The injury situation from this point on became critical as well.

as per, besides browny being/playing injured....since the bulldogs round 4:

the players who rescued us in the past (power and black) have dropped right off, which is very sad to see

others, who you would have expected to take up the slack, like Redden, are well down, and Rich is well down on last year as well (maybe that head injury earlier this year dented some confidence)

add to this recipe players coming back too early/playing injured Brennan/Sauce

this has been our lot, bar the collingwood victory, for the remainder of the season

as an aside, you would never know TJ was a number 1 draft pick.....talk about not pulling your weight or showing leadership out there

I luckily had the night off work and thought i would nip down to the pub for a counter meal and watch the game... Could not believe what happened and am too scared to set foot in that pub again!

Yeah it was the WHITE JUMPER OF SURRENDER and the CURSED PADDLE POP LION.

Put them together and there was obviously no stopping the fall!!!

I am not sure, but what if this 'intense' pre-season put us physically ahead of the opposition for the first month, but then the opposition was able to surge ahead with their fitness etc.

Leigh always seemed to play the game with the idea of peaking at the end of the season. We seemed to peak in April:o

After four rounds we were 4 zip - player confidence sky high - playing Melbourne so called bottom 4 side.

We came into the game over confident - expecting to just turn up and win. Brown was injured but we tried to bluff our way through.

Melbourne jumped us - under pressure we froze and we had no one to dig us out - The penny dropped with a few - the bluff game had been exposed - we retreated into our shells. Injuries have mounted.

Save for Collingwood, we've been there since.

Does anyone know if Phil Jauncey still counsels the players? He did brilliant work with them.always walked round after a player went off , talking to them, I dont think that happens now. In my opinion it is all in the head, get the head space right ,the confidence grows. They have none at the moment, it is so hard to watch them now.

^^^ This.

Plus, as someone else said, if Dr Phil is no longer with us, the psychology of playing professional sport is not being taught to the lads.

Maybe there's an element of tongue in cheek, but I wish those who are banging on about our crappy year being all the fault of the Paddle Pop Lion, would just give it a rest!

It's superstitious nonsense.....akin to believing in putting stick-pins in voodoo dolls, reading tea leaves or events being influenced by the alignment of the planets.

From memory, the "PPL" didn't receive universal acclaim, nor get credit for our first 4 wins out of 4.....so how the hell can he be "blamed" for the subsequent 9 out of 10 losses?

Don't get me wrong...I for one would prefer the "old" Lion but "blaming" the new logo is just being silly.

Obviously it's not the Paddlepop's fault. However to be successful at this level you do need everyone pulling in the right direction both on and off the field. This whole saga is something we could have done with out.

Exhibit A: 1998

I think that we all, as a united group, should pledge to eat a Paddle Pop a day until the curse is lifted - or until we all die from clogged arteries and a lack of teeth. Whichever comes first.
