THE first month of the 2012 season will feature a stand-alone opener between Greater Western Sydney and Sydney and a Ross Lyon grudge match.

The clash between coach Ross Lyon's old club, St Kilda, and new one, Fremantle, was at one stage likely to be scheduled for Round 1, but is expected to be pushed back.

It is believed the AFL's determination to schedule the contest in Melbourne, rather than Perth, to maximise interest means a slight tinkering with the date.

They'd get a bigger crowd in Perth than Melbourne for the Ross Lyon grudge match. Sorry, that'll go down as an AFL fail right there

We would get a decent crowd for the game in Perth regardless hence they are scheduling it in Melbourne to bump up the crowds which are usually pretty low.

I love it though, manipulating the draw for bigger crowds. You don't see that in other sports across the world, only the AFL. Sure you might see a particular team play on say Monday Night Football in the NFL, but they don't make the New England Patriots play every game at home to draw more Crowd do they...

You know why most other sports dont do it.

Because its completely unfair.

Sure try an maximise crowds/tv revenue etc but atleast try an keep things fair.
If we play 1 team 2 times in 2011, in 2012 we should only play them 1 time.
Have the fixtures done in a way that over 3 or so years you have played all teams the same amount of times both home and away(except rival).
ofcourse can keep the rival games at 2 times every year.
eg freo/egirls, collingwood/carlton etc etc.

Atleast try an even it out abit more so that we dont see things like team x has only played team y 11 times in 10 years an only 3 of them were at team y's home ground.

Happens more than you think.

Even the NRL does it.

We always seem to be up and about against the Cats at home, so not upset by that fixture at all. Will be a good indicator of where the team is at.

Also somehow only get GWS once, how does that work?
We got GC once so surely we get to have GWS twice.

The Crows are the only team with four games against GWS/Port Adelaide, with many clubs having only two in total.
