In round 1 GG played a top up player on the Saturday after he played Crows Ressies on the Friday night against WAFC. GG beat Flinders Park in A3 by over 10 goals. SAAFL got wind of it, points stripped, percentage swapped.

Oh ....thought you should be able to go back AFTER playing for the Crows ? .....strange as they'd be tired, so i can't quite see the advantage for GG there?

Its not stuffing up the competition. The SANFL's job is to assist and develop talent for the big league. The fact they struggle with this concept is just a pathetic attempt to keep an image that has long since passed by. You cant blame the AFC or PAFC for stuffing it up otherwise you have to blame every club who drafts talent out of all SANFL clubs as well. Like it or not they influence the competition just as much. Calling me a parasite is just stupid. Why support the crows then, they stuffed up your precious SANFL?

So you want our developing full forwards playing centre half back if it meant winning enough games to play SANFL finals? What if that delayed his development by a year and he couldn't meet his KPI's to make the AFL team?

??????????? you are comparing apples with oranges. Batting and pitching is batting and pitching and is all about technique. Its the same as state cricket here. The afl is the hardest team sport in the world to play, no contest. Also AFL is one of the few sports that draft players to develop in house. European soccer clubs do it but most sports draft in ready made talent.

you do know the baseball competition in Australia is a development league for the MLB don't you?

I am sure we go to win each week.

Once again we were in front at half time, but then our part time players get exposed for a lack of training intensity and we lost beaten by falling away after half time.

I don't think we are affecting the integrity of the competition at all.

There is no bye now and we are a competitive outfit.

We have been cruelled by injuries and we are also hurt by not being able to play more than one ex Crow player in our side.

The boys that have played for the Reserves look to be playing in the positions that they are likely to play at AFL level and their development to me has been enhanced since they played with the stand alone side. It will also help bring the club together all 45 boys playing for the club on the weekend. I often see the league players at these games so it can only be good for team spirit and camaraderie.

We just need to get him into the team, he can help Jacobs before he burns out, he would be great down back to add some size.
He could pinch hit up foward occasionally.
I think we have too many injuries this year to flog Jacobs into the ground

The SANFL teams better enjoy our shiteness now cos if our injury list shortens, then they'll be on the end of some hidings. Thing is, this makes the competition exciting because our poor start coupled with our likely strong comeback like last year will really heat up the finals race, particularly late in the year.

I'd say they are treated as a reserves comp.

Playing to win and impress in equal measures and there is a heavy focus on development in those divisions is pretty much what any reserves comp is... ever.

Only three Crows SANFL players today worthy of a wrap (going by memory and I have done heaps since then, so my recollections may be a bit off).

Knight. He was the one pre season I was most looking forward most to monitoring the progress of. He revealed today he has every chance of a decent AFL career. Coming back from such a layoff he impressed. Would almost start him sub next week, even though doubtful it will happen.

J-Pod. Seasoned AFL player who could come in if needed. A few mistakes but was generally a cut above.

ROB. HIs ruckwork and disposal was quite OK at times. Does know how to find it. Has a future, but behind JJ at present.

I have been a fan of Kerridge but seemed to be playing to impress today rather than the team game. It backfired. He is probably slightly more of an outside mid/half forward/negator but was forced to play on the inside a fair bit. I know ones company can drag one down but The Kedge just didn't cut it today.

Anyway, this is how I saw it. You may disagree, or agree. Would love to hear your thoughts. We were some mids down and had others coming back so our fading was no surprise.

Have to laugh at the no AFL in SANFL brigade, South have been giving the impression for decades they don't want to win the premiership and there was no uproar.

Now a side comes in and pays 400k a season to do the same thing and the world is ending.

I've no idea of the ages of the posters that profess such disdain but I'd assume they never had much to do with footy pre AFL or were too young to develop an affiliation with the comp.
Whatever your views are concerning the validity and previous or current integrity of the comp it's still a comp that deserves respect and some sort of standing. To treat it as simply a feeder comp or a play thing for either local AFL franchise is naive and small minded. You disrespect every clubs long and great history and fall into the Victorian/AFL brainwashing that the only history to be respected is that of the VFL and AFL propaganda machine.
Personally I hate having both franchises in the SANFL but accept their needs and the current lack of football structures, it's been poorly handled by every level of footy and shows a total lack of vision and management by the AFL.
The minimum I'd like to see is that both reserves teams don't qualify for finals as they don't play under the salary cap. Make more of who finished top after the minor round and they can play for that.
Some sort of respect has to be left for the original clubs.
Disrespect our collective history and you undermine the future of footy in this state, do that and we'll all be worse off for it.
Don't be so small minded to only serve your own needs, if you are then don't be surprised when there's a backlash.

Sorry but this is utter garbage. I was a Sturt member before the Crows and still am now. However I understand that the environment has changed and what was never will be again. There is a core of SANFL diehards who either cannot see this or simply refuse to believe it.

The SANFL clubs had the chance to sever ties with the AFL, to go ahead with their remaining 8 clubs and all their history. Retain the credibility of their competition if that was the most important thing to them. They chose not to.

The two AFL clubs only "crime" was to try to find a competition for their reserves teams to play in. They put proposals to the SANFL which were accepted. If they'd have been rejected they would have played elsewhere.

Nothing has changed. Eg AFL players have always been pulled out early for surgery despite their SANFL team being in the finals hunt. It is exactly the same as it has been since 1991, the only difference now is that the 'reserves' compromise is concentrated over two teams rather than diluted over nine.

There is still wider interest in the competition due to the two biggest football teams in town having a presence there. The (smarter) SANFL clubs realised that without the two AFL teams their competition would decay into a glorified amateur league, with the only differences between the SANFL and the SAAFL Division 1 being:
1) The amateur league clubs being more financially stable
2) AFL talent scouts keeping an eye on which 17 year olds at the SANFL clubs are worthy of drafting

The SANFL clubs got exactly what they voted for. In the end they chose the lesser of two evils:
- A competition compromised by having two reserves teams in there balanced by a financial injection
OR
- Sliding into obscurity with no financial injection

It's a shame but times move on. Test cricketers no longer play much Shield cricket. You can bemoan it all you want. I just find it pathetic bleating which serves no purpose whatsoever. Go Sturt.

Nobody cares about the results of team performances of the Minor League teams in Baseball - just like nobody really cares about the SANFL results.

The SANFL is an inferior competition. Its time to realise it isn't important anymore.
