Carlton have Bolton on a one year rolling contract.

Don't know if it's been renewed for 2018 yet but assuming they have done that already.

Just don't know if that would work with us, for any coach. We are a weird club, different to anyone else. The media attention we get is always at a hysterical level so to allow our senior coach to have no contract at all for the following year is always frought with danger.

If we did reappoint Bucks though 2 years is about right, it allows 2018 to be a stress free year of sorts, then 2019 to be the year he is really tested, for the third time anyway (in regards to coming out of contract).
On this one, you are ready got the Emotional Nourishment guy has a rolling contract.
If all clubs did it they'd all be better off.

Contracts are designed to keep Robbo types distracted

At least Walsh is not providing a "recommendation".
This I'm pleased with.

The board will have more than enough evidence and facts to deal with- which if actually assessed properly should have more negatives than positives for Nathan.

Time will tell as to what kind of leader Emperor Ed really is.

The board won't be making any decisions that are not Ed's idea.

Dew and Caracella for example will be involved in finals and I believe opposition teams now respect the clubs they're at and wait for them to complete there season before engaging in serious discussion.

This has nothing to do with sacking Bucks really. A decision on him would be made 'before' they start such a process. They won't string him along till after finals to sack him.

So if they don't do anything till after finals my guess is he is being offered another contract.

Sorry these are just a bunch of retrospective observations. They are essentially meaningless and you have tried to find a significance in them that doesn't exist.

These are cold hard stats that create facts surrounding the recent history of premiership coaches.

If you want to look for any indicator of what the future most likely holds for your side under a coach then what better way than to explore the record of premiership coaches over decades.

You think it's just a coincidence that of the 14 coaches 13 of them were able to turn there teams fortunes around in 3 seasons or under or produce consistently high levels of football from teams over many years, sometimes across multiple clubs that lead to finals, grand finals and premierships?

This is exactly what separates the best coaches from the rest.

On seven they said Walsh said that we need to improve our coaching and skills

I see the 125th logo has had a redesign. That sole magpie looks rather lonely all of a sudden...

Regardless of the ultimate decision, I simply can't fathom how an intelligent and articulate man like Buckley can possibly expect to have his contract extended yet again. Maybe he doesn't and the rumours that he will resign at years end are correct.

Speaking of "improving the coaching", Jake Niall suggested on AFL Tonight that, out of all the assistant coaches out of contract this year, not all of them will go, on the grounds that you can't let everyone go all at once.

I only raise that because, again, Niall tends to get good Collingwood mail...

Burns can get one last chance then

Coaching?

This surely is an indictment on the senior coach…

Or way of passing the buck to everyone bar the main man.

Crikey if they're relying on Richmond to sell that dream couldn't they have at least chosen a club who has made a grand final in the last 30 years.

LOL using Richmond as any type of blueprint for success.

How the mighty have fallen.

What isn't working though?

Sure patience is running thin for everybody, but unless you can identify exactly the areas that aren't working in the football department then you can make things worse before actually seeing any improvement.

You need to take into account the cyclical nature of football and football lists.
Clarko and R.Lyon find themselves in a position similar to that of Buckley circa 2013, after a period where their club was contending they now have to rebuild.

Freo appear to have gone the real long term, going for youth and draft picks.
Hawthorn have tried to circumvent the real bottoming out by trading draft picks for established guys like Mitchell and JOM.

But how do you judge them next year? If Hawthorn finish 12th, which is similar to what Buckley has delivered when trying to rebuild, is Clarko a failure?
If Freo remain out of finals contention for another two years, that will be four years without finals, would Lyon then get the sack?

How long do clubs take to rebuild when they hit the draft is ultimately a result of how quickly and how good the kids they selected actually end up becoming. Nail your kids and you can have rapid improvement, but that is our biggest problem our top kids haven't developed that quickly at all.

For mine, I simply cant hold Buckley accountable for that, it is recruiting, development and conditioning guys that are most important in selecting the right kids and then getting them ready for senior footy. If Buckley himself hand picked the recruiters and conditioning guys well then he should be held to account, but I doubt that would be the case.

How do you know changing the senior coach will improve the circumstances?

If you haven't identified the actual problem's in the football department, and narrowed them down to being a result of failures of Buckley himself, then it is simply change for the sake of change.

That's a very disingenuous and deceiving comparison if Buckleys first year of the rebuild was 2013 then you are comparing his 4th year into said rebuild vs Clarksons 2nd year in. I'm sure If clarko keeps slipping down the ladder each of the next 3 seasons, the knives will come out just like they did in 09....1 year after he snatched a flag and then missed the 8!

Oh and btw I am not sure moving Buckley on is right or wrong answer but at least do apples and apples comparisons to back up your point.

To me nether. There is only one coach l could not stand in the end, weideman.
Great player though.
The comments have been over the top in some regard, but that's life.
If bucks goes so be it, if stays the same to me
If goes do not won't Lyon Roos or rattan, but don't mind Blake Caracalla for some reason. Smart footballer though
If bucks stays ( not sure) the melts will be pretty funny, a lot of kids throwing their toys out of the cot.

I actually think that some on this blog site will get a great deal of personal pleasure when the melts kick in if and when Buckley is extended. Almost a form of personal and perverse justification - "I told you he would be extended".

Had a bet with a mate early in the yr that if we sign Buckley.. I'd do chap laps with my subwoofers at breaking point and my backside hanging out the window wearing fluro red g bangers.. looks like imma lose the bet.

I think I might actually enjoy it as a matter of fact.
There are times I am glad I live in the deep south.

I.e., dont just go and hire people you like Eddie, consult with your staff, who are experts in their chosen fields, and can alert you to the potential issues of hiring someone like Gubby Allan - including impact to existing key personnel, or letting go of / undermining somone like Balme. If you want to cultivate a strong culture... respect it

COLLINGWOOD coach Nathan Buckley is safe — for now.

Pies president Eddie McGuire and his board met last on Tuesday night to assess a report into the club’s failing football operation delivered by veteran football boss Geoff Walsh.

McGuire emerged from the meeting to declare that an announcement on Buckley’s future was “not too far away”. “Tonight was a scheduled board meeting ... and Geoff Walsh tabled his preliminary findings and his recommendations of the blueprint for the football department,” McGuire said.

“What’s happening now is we’re going to reflect on what was a sizable document, some interesting and strong discussion, about where we think we need the club to go and we will reconvene in the next few days and discuss it further.”

Asked when Collingwood supporters would know the fate of Buckley, McGuire said: “When we tell them — but not too far away. “It’s in play now. We’re not going to say one thing and mean another.

“He (Buckley) is coach until the end of the season and that’s what his contract says ... we are pretty firm on that at Collingwood. And that contract ends at the end of this season, which is Saturday, unfortunately for us.

“We haven’t come to a position yet. Seriously guys, there is nothing tricky about this ... there’s a lot to digest and then we’ll make the decisions.”
Buckley took training on Tuesday night ahead of Saturday’s season-ending clash with Melbourne at the MCG. Magpies acting chief executive Peter Murphy, who is conducting a separate review into the club’s entire operation, also attended last night’s board meeting. Buckley was not required to attend.

If the club were to sack Buckley, he would not be the only casualty with sweeping changes expected in the assistant coaching ranks, and in the recruitment, list management, high performance and medical departments.

The Pies have slipped to 13th on the ladder, the lowest in Buckley’s six-year reign since taking over from Michael Malthouse at the end of 2011. The club has an eight-win, 12-loss and one-draw record this season. McGuire has not rules out the return of suspended former football boss Graeme “Gubby” Allan.

The club’s other directors are Alex Waislitz, Alisa Camplin, Christine Holgate, Mark Korda, Paul Leeds and Ian McMullin.
