The 3 best and 3 worst performers of draft day

West Coast - NickNat, Shuey, Swift and Ash Smith. The Coasters are clearly top for mine.
Port Ade- Hartlett, Trengrove, Banner, Davenport and Broadbent. Second, just.

I personally think Freo did quite well. They got their man in Hill, who i think will be okay. Fantastic athlete in all aspects. They got a big slider in Walters who should live up to hype. I agree they picked a bolter in their 2nd pick; but there is nothing wrong with that at all. Clubs rate players different to others. They obviously have faith in Ballantyne, in that they think he will live up to his selection number, and they backed themselves. I think it is the right way to recruit.

Essendon got a beauty at pick 67 in Slattery. If we only picked Suban over Zaharakis at 23 i would have rated the Essendon drafts slightly higher. I rate us around the 6 or 7th mark. Behind Carlton, Freo, Melb and Ade in no particular order.

Ade had to choose between Davis, Trengrove and McKernan at 10. They took Davis which was a suprise to me. I ranked them Trengrove>McKernan>Davis.
But they got 2 out of the 3 which was a suprise but a great result for them.

Adelaide did reasonably well, stole Trengove and went tall when they needed too. Makes sense to me.

Bulldogs also did well, picked up Cordy who was touted as a top 10 pick otherwise, and addressed their needs of talls.

Richmond was odd, we got two talls and two smalls (Thomson added) it's a balanced draft yet 3 seems little. PSD may hold something.

funny felt sure pafc drafted trengove with their second pick

I'm amused by the Carlton and Collingwood supporters criticisng Essendon's drafting. Everybody has forgotten to mention that Hurley who incidentally like Rich was rated as a likely top 3 pick mid year before the emergence of Watts and Hill.

Additionally, these so called experts referring to him as only a key defender obviously haven's seen him play. The beauty of him is that he can play both ends very well. Essendon have well and truly sured up their KPP stocks before the introduction of the expansion clubs. To further support my point, click on the link look at Hurley stats over the last 2 years. He is arguably the best contested mark in the TAC cup and can most certainly go forward and kick a bag of goals:

Very impressive I would have thought, I know most defintiely that Carlton were desperate for him. I'll concede that I was all for taking a gun midfielder, however, they rated this guy too good to pass up.

Best: 1. West Coast (got some massive steals. Swift is a risk but could pay off massively)
2. Melbourne (did very well and got plenty of pace, coupling with natural footy smarts)
3. Port Adelaide (for their picks they did very well)

Worst: 1. Freo (for their picks they could have done much better)
2. Hawthorn (went to tall, how are they going to fit them in their side) 3. Adelaide (disappointing for their picks, i can hear PIHL screaming)

Yeah it sucks starting with pick 16...

Since 2004 we've drafted better than any other club.

I'll trust Pelchin and Clarko know what they're doing!

Yeh, if your trying to turn Schoenmakers into a CHB then i wouldn't have you bottom 3.

**** i just really wanted the Schoe at 17! Bitches!

I'd prefer to give my opinion in a years time, but even then it would be premature, however;

Port Adelaide did very well getting Trengove with their second pick and to compliment the fact they got a skilled mid with their first pick, well done.

I also noted that a lot of clubs seemed to select local talent, I know clubs say they don't pay much attention to the go-home-factor, but the proof is there. Top 5 all stayed in their state. And aside from obviously Sydney and Brisbane, only 2 clubs chose an interstate player in the first round.

Nick Natinui + Tom Swift = WC #1 Rank

Port, Collingwood, Carlton, Freo, Melbourne had great drafts - not in any particular order.

John Reid was just on 5AA radio

He said that the Crows got 4 of the top 18 players in the draft, he said that Tom Lee was the 18th ranked player in the draft.

Their selections were --

10. ADELAIDE - Phil Davis (North Adelaide)
28. ADELAIDE - Shaun McKernan (Calder Cannons)
44. ADELAIDE - Rory Sloane (Eastern Ranges)
60. ADELAIDE - Thomas Lee (Claremont Tigers)
72. ADELAIDE - William Young (North Ballarat Rebels)

So Davis, McKernan, Sloane & Lee were in the top 18 in the draft

Does anyone agree with the Crows rankings?

This is the 2nd year they have said the same kind of stuff

What reason would they have to lie about their own ratings, post the fact?

I doubt anyone agrees with the rankins otherwise the guys would have gone in the top 20. That's teh beauty of objective judgment.

Now it comes down to luck and player development.

The petiness and biterness on this site are depressing.

Excellent draft for Port by the way, on paper, IMLO.

Ive never seen Walker play and knew the others didnt have the agility for CHF hence that comment. If Tippet plays CHF, Hunter will kick 10. Tippet gets tired playing FF never mind CHF. He needs to improve endurance tenfold.

Shaun is a courageous, strong-bodied ruckman who plays in a similar vein to his older brother – former North Melbourne premiership player Corey

You should tell AFL.com.au to change there info....

just lol that is all

Natanui will be a disaster, I'm looking forward to watching that train wreck. Plenty of laughs in store for all non - WCE supporters methinks.:thumbsu:

agree nata is an athlete not a footballer

and swift is injury prone hardly played in the last 2 years

HUUUGE RISK TAKEN BY THE WEASELS

Interesting to read in the Herald Sun today, Brisbane's South Australian recruiter apparently rated Jack Redden as the 2nd best South Australian in the draft. Apparently they were absolutely stoked to get him at 25.

Graeme Hadley - also in charge of our WA decisions.

Certainly has the runs on the board.

I cant imagine any other club would've used a second round pick on Ballantyne.
I doubt that we would've even considered him.

NickNat consecutive All-Australian, played in a senior WAFL grand final as an 18 year old.

Sounds like a real disaster by the Eagles.

Next time take the time to have a look at a player before you offer your opinion.

There is no point in wasting your valuable time responding to idiots.

I'm sure anyone would admit to the fact that NicNat is always going to be a bit of a risk. He is very raw and will take quite a bit of polishing.

But just looks at the tools he already possesses and you would be crazy for passing on him. I wouldn't have been one bit surprised if he had of gone #1. He is just a talent you can't afford to pass on. Will love watchng him blossom and develop.

Cant really understand the criticism of the bombers trading. So, we went with arguably the best KPP in the draft rather than arguably the best midfielder in draft(who 5 other teams passed on). For those that say he is too slow, he has beaten the number 1 pick Watts who is faster and Taller at TAC cup and has played on the best young KPF in the country last 2 years and been AA FB. He has elite kicking ability either foot and great composure and decision making. We also have Pears developing as another option if he is finding it difficult to handle the pace of a Fevola for example, and he can just as easily play CHB. The other upside is he is a player that has a big body, loves the contested situation and can take a grab, and could kick goals from 50+ m either foot. Not a bad option to send forward if required. This pick has added to our brigade of KPP players to take over from the 3 greats who will retire in next 2-3 years, and given that we have a raft of young developing midfielders, it could easily be argued that the quality KPP is of a greater need for our club. I personally was happy either way and would have been just as dissapointed missing Hurley. Pretty sure plenty at Carlton are disappointed not to get him.

I don't think Wayne Hughes and the Carlton footy club would be too disappointed seeing as though they believe we got the 2nd best player in the draft. ;)

Yarren is a great get for Carlton, not knocking them at all. Was simply saying there are plenty of carlton supporters that would have liked to see hurley in the navy blue. Dont often get KPP like him come along. Mind you i rate Yarren highly too and he could be a star. Point is, cant see why bombers would be talked down for taking such a higly rated KPP considering the we lose 3 quality KPP players next few years.

reading alot of posts here quite a few saying we needed talls... thats a load of crap.. we have got enough talls yes we do need a chf but late picks your not going to find a good KPP...
im rapt with our players that are picked

as for the winner i would say Port

nobody is talking about richmond, how does everybody think they went??

they got their man in vickery which is great and there is a bit of speculation amongst richmond supporters over whether we should have taken mckernan instead of post. i thought it was a bad move at first but i realised vickory and mckernan woud be competing for the same spot in the richmond team ruck/forward. post is more versatile and will come olong a bit quicker than mckernan i feel despite mckernans size.

winners: blues- robinson huge steal- one of my favourites
crows- mckernan will be a good solid player and so will davis
port- trengove and hartlett- they will see that as 2 top 10 picks
Wce- swift a future star
brisbain- rich cheap as chips
losers:
freo- taking hill over hill was a shocker
dogs- why did they take 2 ruckman

probly a few others but cant think atm
