It's pretty simple... really. The people running the place are a combination of: (1) untalented, so they can't tell coherent, complex or elevated stories; and (2) utterly terrified of telling a traditional story.

Imagine a traditional hero's journey, with great effects, positive characters that reflect the audience they have and the world of Star Wars to set it in. That's money in the bank, at least as a one off. But they're terrified of doing anything that appeals to the base. So they try to do "nuanced" stories but can't keep track of the lore and common sense when trying to execute or they try and appeal to a tiny slice of potential viewers at the cost of the expansive core of the Star Wars fandom.

If they did a traditional hero's journey people would complain that it's nothing new and we've seen it plenty of times before. Fans of big franchises are in a perpetual battle with their own expectations of wanting things to be fresh and interesting but also not deviate at all from what they know and are familiar with.

I honestly think this is a defeatist attitude and frankly just wrong. The Force Awakens was a soft reboot of A New Hope and was effectively the same story (i.e a simple heroes journey) and it was something like 3rd all time on box office when it was released. Just checking, even with Avatar 2 and End Game now surpassing it, it's still 5th all time.

Star Wars just needs to:
  • be positive and not pessimistic about the source material; and
  • appeal to the base of core fans (15-65 year old males).

If they do that, they will be successful. Even if its just one to get the franchise back on track and then get more creative from there.

I can't stress it enough, this show cost as much as Dune 2. Money and resources are not a problem for this studio, it is merely the attitudes and philosophies of people in charge.

There’s a fair bit to unpack from this 3rd episode, I’m going to have to rewatch those last few minutes.

Massive spoiler, don’t read until you’ve seen the episode.

The prophecy. So Osha and Mae were considered to be the chosen ones?

This show is unintentionally hilarious. My eyes nearly rolled out of my head with the witch's ceremony.

The set was like something from the original Star Trek series. $22.5 million per episode!

The twins have two mothers. One carried them, the other created them. But they'll be in trouble when the Jedi find out out how she did it. I'm picturing another flashback scene involving a Jedi whose mind has been captured, a pickle jar and a turkey baster.

Did they just redefine the Force?

The plot of the series revolves around Mae getting revenge on the Jedi - when it was all her fault that her family and community were destroyed! What the hell did Torbin do wrong that he needed to levitate without speaking for years then kill himself with a poison?

Astounding... how much are they paying these people haha.

This is almost Ukraine-war levels of "where does the money go?".

Kathleen Kennedy and co. partying in downtown LA like the population of Kyiv.

The wookie is comedy gold.

Hi mate you might have missed my question to you above. :)

Yep he is doing well bashing sh!te movies & TV shows of late. Its not that hard to do either considering the amount of material Disney has thrown their way.

Kind of ironic where Disney Corp has ended up considering the nature of the founder, Walt Disney as a person.

To me it’s like eating a bowl of salt before tucking into a meal at your favourite restaurant and complaining about the taste.

Why you’d do that to yourself I have no idea but in the end it’s your loss I guess.

3rd ep was ok. Nothing lore breaking, as has been made out online.

Witches aren't new to Star Wars. The animated series and Jedi games did a better job than Ashoka though.

Assuming there's a lot more to play out over who did what with the witches being killed.

Massive spoiler, don’t read until you’ve seen the episode.

I must have missed it, I didnt pick up on that being the case at all?

the immaculate conception reference. “There was no father”. Seemed to cause a similar reaction to the Jedi hearing that as it did Qui Gonn in TPM. Hence I was just speculating, did they think similar in regards to that prophecy.

Having said that though, the prophecy was about bringing balance to the force. At this point in the timeline, it’s presumed the Sith are not even around or active. So it raises the question about what balance is there to bring?

Another theory I have altogether. Perhaps Darth Plaguis learned this whole thing about “manipulating the midichlorians to create life” from the witches themselves.

I mean surely this is the whole point. You're supposed to watch that and go "but why does Torbin carry all that guilt? Is there more to the story than what we've seen?"

I feel like I can almost guarantee this is building to a reveal that it's actually the Jedi that killed most of the coven. There's no way that the little paper fire alone caused all that damage.

In fact given that this was supposed to be a "controversial" episode I assumed that this reveal was going to happen. Hell, that would've been a lot better source of "controversy" than the absolute nothing that was actually in the episode.

I'll be absolutely shocked if the idea of the Jedi being more directly involved in the death of the coven doesn't come up before the end of the season.

I like the series, its keeping me intrigued. Again, it's not perfect, but it's got enough here to keep me engaged

It looks like a CW production, the formula for Star Wars is so simple yet Disney has dropped the ball on almost everything

Torbin went from Padawan to Master in around 5 years?

You think that's crazy, Osha and Mae went from 8 to what, mid 20s in these "around 5 years". Bloody Disney. Unless it's actually the 16 years that is explicitly mentioned at the start.

it's almost as if the very start of the episode outlined how long ago the flashback was

Flashback happened around 148 BBY, they said he was Indara's Padawan. Mae found Torbin in 132 BBY in the meditative state he had been in for a decade.

Folks, I've done a little bit of cleaning up (no doubt there is more to do).

This is the Entertainment board, not the Politics board. Derailing threads about a show, by arguing about diversity and 'wokeness', is not the path we want to go down.

If it continues, the approach won't be soft.

Cheers

This episode lost me a little bit.
Not for any of the carry on that the perpetual haters go on about. It just doesn't feel like Star Wars to me. I'm not very invested so far, just mildly interested in seeing where it goes.

I stand by my original assessment that the acting isn't very good.
I don't hate it and I couldn't give a shit about stupid little things like fires in space. It's sci-fi/fantasy, not science fact. If we can believe in plasma swords, laser guns, light speed travel and space wizards with mind control and telekinesis, then a fire in space isn't a stretch.

Not sure I'll end up seeing this one through to the end, but will hang on a bit longer.

yes there’s clearly so much more that happened. There was that loud noise and scream right above Osha as she was going through that tunnel. The women didn’t look burned by fire. Their demise must have happened another way. How did Sol arrive so quickly on the scene? What was he even doing there? Lots more to this story than what was shown from this perspective.
