From Roby's power player rankings thread on the main board:

"Thompson I think must be underrated. Ranks:
  • 4th in the league for average clearances per game
  • 6th in the league for average contested possessions per game
  • 7th in the league for average tackles per game
  • 3rd for average inside 50's at Adelaide
  • 1st for average disposals per game at Adelaide
  • 2nd at Adelaide ranked by Champion Data"
Not bad for an old, slow, on his last legs midfielder.

Have you seen that guys Team Power Ranking threads over the years?

Drool.

Almost considering getting the monday rag to grab those stats... but do they put them in again Monday if they were in Sunday? I'm not THAT keen to buy every advertiser :p
I may be able to access these stats shortly :D I'll keep you informed.

Not sure what thread to put this in.
Top 5 predictions in our B&F in the halfway mark.

Mine is:
1. Danger
2. Laird
3. Betts
4. Jacobs
5. Talia

Interesting stats re our contested possessions vs our uncontested possessions in the league...

Only 3 in the top 99 for uncontested possessions, Rory Laird at 72, Matthew Jaensch at 80 and Tom Lynch at 86

http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_rankings?year=2015&rt=LA&st=UP

Yet for contested possessions we have 3 inside the top 10...

Patrick Dangerfield at 3, Scott Thompson at 4 and Rory Sloane at 9.

http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/ft_player_rankings?year=2015&rt=LA&st=CP

Does this tell us we have too many players not working hard enough to get off their man and find space or maybe our game plan needs tweaking???

Not enough spread from the ball ups and boundary throw ins??

or we need some good outside players

Funny thing is a lot of the players way above our blokes aren't anywhere near what you would call "outside" players.
Interesting that the 10 Hawthorn players in the top 100 all had their highest uncontested game against us.

Does that point out some of our players aren't working hard enough or our game plan needs tweaking to compete with the top boys?? Good pick up btw.

Bit of both, didn't seem we got at the ball carrier (manic pressure) as much as we have done.
Also probably need to know what constitutes an uncontested possession.

Think this has more to do with the fact that Walshy has us playing a fast game. Playing on, and kicking long.

We don't just sit back and chip chip it around like some sides. Also ties in with our disposal efficiency being low.

Uncontested possessions is a bit of a low value stat, as its too dependant on a teams game style. A team can be really crap, but still have high uncontested possessions by trying to play safe by chipping it around in the backline, and not pushing forward.

Hence teams like North, Essendon, and St Kilda having more uncontested disposals, but being low on the ladder.

Crows are trying to play a high risk game which is working well in some areas, and not so much in others like turnovers.

Not sure if we want or need this, but seeing as I'm the self proclaimed Statman, I decided to do it anyway. I'll update our stats every week.

Some interesting team stats;
  • Added goal ratio per i50. We're ranked 11th for conversion, though ahead of the curve due to outliers Suns and Bombers. We're also going at worse than our direct opponents. Our defence appears to be suffering from lack of midfield pressure to me.
  • Our DE has fallen below our direct opponent comparison for the first time this season. Stats reflect something we've all seen as obvious.

UPDATED POST RD 10
Quoted for truth.

Our UP stats not too big a deal IF we are still transitioning the ball effectively down the field…I'm not convinced we are, and I do believe we need our outside receivers to improve.

- Mackay had one decent game and now is a lock down defender!!
- Smith concussed x2
- Grigg now injured
- Henderson has been injured
- VB rubbish

There's our 'outside' players, as well as Sloane who occasionally gets on the wing.

Absolutely love to see Atkins and Knight get a crack.

Some interesting team stats;
  • We are now officially ranked 17th for DE above only Gold Coast. We are the only two teams with a season DE below 70%.
  • We are kicking 4 more behinds per game than average this season. This leads to a 47.1% score ratio once inside 50, ranked 7th, but only 24.5% goal ratio once inside 50, ranked 11th.
Some interesting player stats;
  • Non scoring shots on goal added this week. I gather this includes out on the full, shots resulting in rushed behinds, shots resulting in opposition take-away, shots resulting in stoppages, shots resulting in Crows possession. ADJUSTED DUE TO INCORRECT FORMULA
  • Clearly puts Tex's goal kicking more clearly on the radar, 51 shots on goal with only 27 goals while Eddie has had 52 shots on goal for 33 goals.
  • Score involvement added this week. Eddie, The Chief and Tex leading the way here.
  • Effective hitouts added this week, along with effective hitout %. Jacobs is going at just under 9 effective hitouts per game at a rate of just over 25% effective hitouts. JJ is going at 21% effective hitouts.
Stats updated post round 12.

So I've been thinking about the correlation between team list stability and ladder position and decided to look into whether it's real or not. I think it's all pretty spot on, and the outliers, as you'll see below, all have pretty good reasons for why they are outliers.

Team|Ladder position|Players played every game|Players played all but one or two games|Total players used|Consistency rating||Used minus every game||Revised ladder position||Notes
\Fremantle|1|13|8|27|21/22||14||1||1=1
\Sydney|3|13|6|27|19/22||14||2||2~3
\Collingwood|4|13|5|30|18/22||17||3||3~4
\Adelaide|7|11|7|29|18/22||18||4||Have been criticised (mainly on this board) for carrying underperforming players.
\Essendon|13|14|3|32|17/22||18||5||Have been in the media about carrying passengers due to Hird's reluctance to drop players loyal to him.
\North Melbourne|11|11|8|30|19/22||19||6||Again often in the media for not making a statement by dropping underperforming senior players.
\Richmond|8|14|3|35|17/22||21||7||7~8
\West Coast|2|11|7|33|18/22||22||8||Have performed above expectation despite losing numerous defenders.
\GWS|6|10|7|32|17/22||22||9||Will likely drop down the ladder due to recent LTIs.
\Geelong|10|10|6|33|16/22||23||10||10=10
\Hawthorn|5|8|7|32|15/22||24||11||Depth shining through. Surprising they haven't had more players playing close to most games. Though 7 more players have missed either 3 or 4 games.
\Port|12|10|4|35|14/22||25||12||12=12
\Brisbane|17|10|2|36|12/22||26||13||I'd put this to a lot of youth, inexperience and trade-ins in the side getting used to the club.
\Bulldogs|9|6|9|33|15/22||27||14||Have uncovered some fantastic youngsters, inconsistency of these guys is probably at play here. Perhaps should be higher on the ladder?
\St Kilda|14|6|11|34|17/22||28||15||15~14
\Melbourne|15|8|5|36|13/22||28||16||16~15
\Carlton|16|7|6|36|13/22||29||17||17~16
\Gold Coast|18|3|5|40|8/22||37||18||18=18
So what am I getting at? Probably something everyone knows anyway, but I like when stats back up an argument. Basically either we should be higher on the ladder because of the stability in our team list, or we should have tried a few more players to suit our current appropriate ladder position. Essentially, by maintaining a stable team sheet, you're more likely to be a better more consistent team across the season.

you need to consider the age and experience of those lists though. Even though ours is stable, its been stable with inexperienced people. Whereas say hawks or geelong(just getting that off the top of my head, not going to check actual list age) might have had more rotate through, but those that came in may be more experienced than even the ones we've had continually in the team.

Interesting stats re our contested possessions vs our uncontested possessions in the league...
Only 3 in the top 99 for uncontested possessions, Rory Laird at 72, Matthew Jaensch at 80 and Tom Lynch at 86...Yet for contested possessions we have 3 inside the top 10...

Does this tell us we have too many players not working hard enough to get off their man and find space or maybe our game plan needs tweaking???
Not enough spread from the ball ups and boundary throw ins??

cant fkin kick

Some interesting player stats;

My mucking about continues ...

As the ladder adjusts (and it's fairly volatile at the moment), it shows how impossible it is to setup a draw based on last year's ranking:

Our team in order of DE%. At least no one was below 50% for a change.

I'm almost bored hanging crap on VB, Wright, Mackay, Thommo. Whatever. Maybe Knight could take the skills coaching this week. Or perhaps he doesn't have the leadership skills? Fingers crossed he isn't given a role.

Ladder related stats after Round 15 are below.

I guess by now the things that show up the loudest are the teams that have it relatively easy so far and have a hard run home or visa-versa.

In for some harder times:
Collingwood - easiest first 15 rounds / 6th hardest remainder of the year
West Coast - 2nd easiest first 15 rounds / hardest remainder of the year
St Kilda - 3rd easiest first 15 rounds / 2nd hardest remainder of the year
Sydney - 4th easiest first 15 rounds / 3rd hardest remainder of the year

Maybe come home with a wet sail:
North Melbourne - 3rd hardest first 15 rounds / 2nd easiest remainder of the year

Port and Geelong are in another category - Hard start to the year and not easy of the year! Port have 5 "upset" victories and only 2 "upset" losses which to me indicates they are probably sitting lower than they should be.

Expect the Giants and the Bulldogs to finish strongly.

Not sure if we want or need this, but seeing as I'm the self proclaimed Statman, I decided to do it anyway. I'll update our stats every week.

Some interesting team stats;
  • We are now officially ranked 17th for DE above only Gold Coast. We are the only two teams with a season DE below 70%.
  • We are kicking 4.4 more behinds per game than average this season. This leads to a 46.9% score ratio once inside 50, ranked 7th, but only 24.5% goal ratio once inside 50, ranked 13th. We're also ranked 15th for goal accuracy.
  • Included effective hitouts (ranked 8th) and effective hitouts % (ranked 7th).
