Competitions The AFC Ladder Game

Hi people,

I have a game which I created for another forum, and it is a bit of fun that does not require much effort (except to me ;) )

It is called:
Big Bad Bov's Ladder Game

The game itself is simple. You (whoever wants to play) give me their ladder prediction for the end of the Home and Away series.

Each week I compare the actual ladder against your predictions. You get a score accordingly. Now the scoring is like Golf, so the smaller the score the better you go.

So how does this work Mr Bovo, I hear you ask.

For every ladder position you get correct you get a score of 0. For every position that is not correct, you get a point for the difference of that position.

So lets say you pick (using 4 just for the example) as your ladder prediction:
Adelaide
Brisbane
Sydney
Fremantle

Round 1
Sydney
Adelaide
Brisbane
Fremantle

For round 1:
Sydney is 2 spots from your prediction so you get 2 points
Adelaide is 1 spot from your prediction so you get 1 point
Brisbane is 1 spot from your prediction so you get 1 point
Fremantle is 0 spots from your prediction so you get 0 points.

For round 1 you get a total of 4 points. Each week there is a round winner, and the scores are concatenated each week to reveal and end of season winner.

Hopefully that all makes sense, and feel free to ask questions. I will only set it up if there is a good number of people interested. It does take a fair bit of time for The Bov (although I am more than happy to do this).

Who is interested?

Well kids there is only a couple of weeks to go before the beginning of the season, so here is what I require.

Simply start giving me your ladders. If you change your mind, please use the edit. By the first game I will grab all the ladders and put them in my nifty gizmo application and will provide a weekly to fortnightly score.

Getting the ladder right for round 22, may not mean you win. It will be the person who has the ladder correct for the majority of the year who will win.

Okies people, start your ladder prediction for 2011.....

No points allocation for the bye?
Nope. They'll be 0 for, 0 against, 0 premiership pts, 0% after R1.

Similarly, you can almost guarantee that Adelaide will be no higher than 6th or 7th after the bye in R2 - the top 5 or 6 teams will all have 8 premiership points (2 wins) to our 4 or 0 (depending on the R1 result).

It all balances out after 24 rounds though, with every team playing 22 games and having 2 byes.

This may be true, Vader, however you only give the table for the end of the home and away season (not each week). You may be correct that GC will be 17th after the bye, but they may be 11th after the home and away season which means you probably don't want to base it on Round 1 etc.

Gotcha. Thought this was a week-by-week competition, not just a "predict the final H&A ladder" competition.

Seems a strange idea for a competition then.. Players are asked to nominate how they think the ladder will look at the end of the H&A season, but points are based on how this differs from the weekly ladder for each of the 24 rounds?

Players must be torn between where they think clubs will be for the majority of the season, versus where they'll finish the H&A season. This makes a big difference for teams which start fast but fade towards the end of the year, or clubs who start slowly but surge up the ladder during July & August.

My suggestion would be to pick one or the other, but not both. In other words, get people to nominate their ladders on a weekly basis for comparison against the real weekly ladder; or, nominate & judge solely on the end of H&A season ladder.

I thought about doing a week by week competition, but the administrative overhead for me (having to submit everyone's pick every week), would be a nightmare.

I May allow for a mid update....but that would mean re-programming my code....
Let me think on it.

FWIW, I think that a "predict the final ladder" game is a really good idea. My suggestion would be to keep it simple though - do the calculations once only, after R24.

Turning it into a weekly competition would involve far too much overhead for you - and the alternative (final ladder vs weekly ladder) is just plain silly.

Not easy, thinking Adelaide a little high.

That part is okay. I already have written the program to do this. I simply put the real ladder in each week, and it automatically gives you a golf like score. I post this weekly to show you who the weekly winner is, and who the overall winner is. No problems whatsoever!

All you have to do is give me your round 24 ladder prediction ;)
