The AFL is boring now

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

A couple of weeks ago I tried watching some major league baseball on One. My God it was dull. I just don't get baseball.

Mind you, the yanks are probably the same with cricket.

The only sports I follow religously are football and cricket; I like my tennis too, don't mind some aussie rules in small doses, have no time for RL/RU and
Grid Iron and I also have a small interest in basketball.

Hearing you on baseball though, I just can't see the appeal. Those crazy yanks have some strange sporting tastes!!!

They do seem to be nuts on their lingerie football though....which I can't fault them for.

Great stuff! :thumbsu:

Most Australians would have been better off sitting up late on Sunday night to watch Lleyton Hewitt play some fantastic tennis against Roger Federer, rather than getting up early to watch Dad's Army getting slaughtered by the Germans. Hewitt & Federer played some of the best grasscourt tennis I have seen for years

Finally, after 3 weeks of posting, the AFL-fans have understood that ...

... Aussies only get up in large numbers - at any hour of the night or morning- to watch one sporting team -

the National Football Team of Australia

You may all think they should get up to watch swimming, or tennis, or golf, or International Rules, or the Ashes.

But, Aussies, who follow these sports can't be bothered; and the neutrals have no interest.

I can't think of many other major sports that are on at such an ungodly time.

Can't agree that the AFL is boring now, although I don't really care what is happening in the AFL besides anything related to Carlton and Supercoach. World Cup is the main interest right now

Funny, they only do its once every 4 years (sort of like they do for the Olympics). For the rest of the time most Australians couldn't tell you who Mark Schwartzer normally plays for, or who Harry Kewell plays for & wouldn't have a clue who Jason Culina is. How many people watched Kieren Perkins overcome the odds, in an outside lane, to again win the 1500m Olympic Final? And the number of Australians that got up early to watch a yacht race back in 1983.

Of course every year thousands of Aussie Rules fans queue overnight, sometimes in bitterly cold conditions, to ensure they get finals & GF tickets. They also turn up week in, week out in the hundreds of thousands to watch home & away games. What Clive Palmer would give to have spectators actually turn up to watch Gold Coast United play.

I've been having to dig deep for my AFL news lately. Generally just go straight to the AFL site to be sure I'll find it. Quite frustrating when even if I tune into a AFL show they mention the world cup.

Some interesting insights from one of the most successful coaches currently in the AFL.

In particular Malthouse speculates:

1. AFL might be able to bring the occasional player in from other sports but I don't think AFL football will ever become truly international.

2. AFL game time may need to be reduced since "people want a close competition so they are not bored stiff when a team is 10 goals up at three-quarter-time"

Interesting. This is exactly why Football fans have always been convinced that goals are not important. Tension is important and 0-0 can be nail-biting right to the final whistle.

When England was 4-1 down last night the game was over. At 2-1 the tension was unbelievable.

It wasn't designed to be an international sport, thats why it's called Australian Rules Football

When that goal was disallowed I gave up and went to bed. Seriously, I gave up on it and went to bed. What a complete farce.

Good for you. 6.7 billion people stayed awake and kept discussing the event well after the final whistle.

But, you showed them you're a man of principles! Bravo to you. You are a true warrior.

PS: I hear that Collingwood supporters are still talking about the "out of bounds goal" from the 79 Grand Final and St Kilda supporters wonder why a goal was awarded to Hawkins in the 2009 GF when the ball hit the post and the umpire was standing less than 1 metre from impact?!

Not as boring as the World Cup I can guarantee you that

I like the "highlights" they show of the game, they only consist of near misses because no ones good enough to actually score, and the red and yellow cards given which were incorrect anyway...must be hard to referee a game that only has about two rules...off- side and handball

I doubt you would be part of the potential football market so your views on "the product" are irrelevant.

Nothing to do with principles, otherwise I wouldn't have watched any of it. The disallowed goal just ruined for me.

Fair enough. I'm baffled why you bothered watching a game at midnight when you've consistently made negative comments about the Game and the players.

Why not just watch the highlights on the news the next morning?

Or, has the enormity of this global event finally captured your attention, too!

I know it's hard to keep away once you're hooked - welcome aboard.

It wasn't midnight in Perth, we have our own timezone.

I'm opposed to having the world cup in Australia, not against the world cup in general. I watch all kinds of sport. This weekend I've watched AFL, WAFL, World Cup soccer, MotoGP, Formula 1, Basketball.

LOL @ anyone who claims they would have stopped watching the game because of a disallowed goal. Admiral Byng did you stop watching the Grand Final when St Kilda scored a goal that hit the goal post blatantly yet the Goal Ump (standing next to the incident) paid a goal? I highly doubt it, which makes me think you weren't watching the game at all.

If anything, I thought when watching it, sweet, England are going to fire up and really give it to the Germans. FYI Admiral it was a great game of football last night - even you would have to admit that.

Where Im living we get the games from 7am until lunch time, and as much I dislike soccer I watch the Aus games if im home just because I support Aus in all sports.
I found it a bit disappointing that the only time they seemed to have a real dip was in the last half against Serbia when they suddenly realised scoring goals might actually get you somewhere in the world cup.
If all times played like this it would be much more entertaining, not to mention you might have more chance of winning, after all you wait 4 years to play 3 games, the least they could do is give it there all.

If you ever actually play or study the Game you'll realise it's sporting suicide to play like that for 90 minutes unless you have the technique of Brasil or Spain ... and, Brasil in 82 will tell you it's still suicide to play like that and Spain got beaten by Switzerland using that all out attack.

The World Cup is a cup competition - you play for results. Simple as that.

The tactics were always the same. Keep a clean sheet for at least 60 minutes and then bring on the attacking power and rely on superior stamina to win the match.

Against Germany, the plan went out the window when they went 2-0 up.

Regardless, Australia was 1 goal away from qualifying - if Wilkshire scores when he's one-on-one with the Goal keeper against Ghana, we would have qualified and, who knows, it may be Australia - not Ghana - in the 1/4 finals against Uruguay.

All "ifs" and "maybes". But, with football at the WC even the smallest error will be punished.

You can "lol" all you like, but that is absolute gospel truth.

The "goal" in last year's Grand Final isn't a valid comparison, being a different sport.

When I saw the disallowed goal I thought England will definitely lose, but the referee blunder will overshadow the match.

I've found in general most folk who dislike football go out of their way not to watch the Aussies in the World Cup. I remember one bloke at my workplace in 06 trying to convince everyone not to bother wasting their time watching the Socceroos because "Soccer is a shit sport for ****s". I can tell you that in my workplace of 150 employees, he was the lone one out. Oh well, I guess at least he got to get some extra sleep over the rest of us. Didn't help him very much as he got fired four months later as he was a w***er in general.

Bring on the Asian Cup (get the Socceroos on the anti siphoning list too ASAP). I reckon we have a great chance at glory and the whole nation will be celebrating, come end of January. Although the Qataris may attempt to poison our food after we take the 2022 World Cup hosting rights off them :)

Are people trying to compare the incompetence of refereeing in soccer to the AFL?

Folks, let us all be very clear, soccer is stuck in an 1860s timewarp where they are insistent on relying on 1860s technology (fob watches, little flags, etc)

As I have said many times - it's lowest common denominator stuff - that's soccer.

3 years ago, the AFL had to overturn the final result of a game played in Tasmania after the car horn didn't work so no one knew when the game ended!!

I kid you not. The guy blew the horn to end the game but it didn't work. So he started ringing a bell, but no one heard it!! Well, that's "grass roots" sport, i guess.

What technology does the AFL rely on? 3 clowns prancing about trying to umpire a game, with 6 helpers on the sidelines and ... commentators and fans still think they get more than 50% of the decisions incorrect!

In a recent match the umpires were wearing uniforms that closely matched the players, which caused confusion and possible loss for the Melbourne club!
