We got Tambling via the priority pick system back in 2004, and even before we found out how ordinary he was as a footballer I was embarrassed by the whole concept. It's a massively humiliating thing in football, to go cap in hand for an extra advantage at draft time. The Blues have always been a very proud club, even through this very tough period. They'll engender far more respect if they resist the temptation to ask for charity.
How embarrassing! How embarrassed are you that you won a flag on the back of a priority pick in Rance.

Keep telling yourself that Ron. It wasn't that long ago that they were giving away tickets to fill up Richmond games at the mcg. Richmond have a powerful base but even you would be the first to admit when things arent going too well , that the supporters will fall away. It's the same with every club.
When Carlton start performing , all this will be a distant memory and the supporters will come out and watch and barrack as hard as ever. Getting kicked whilst we are down we maKe us stronger than ever before. And when it happens, look out .

Yes, numbers drop away for all clubs when the team isn't performing. And when up and about, Carlton has more or less the same level of support as Richmond.

A simple contrast is in order, however. Carlton, in the midst of its bleakest-ever period, has seen four finals series in 17 years, including a club-record finals drought of seven years. Richmond supporters saw two finals series in 30 years, with droughts of 13 and 12 years. And you lot reckon you've seen pain. Hahahahaha!

Struggletown is in Richmond's DNA, yet at heart we're supreme optimists. How else could we put up with so much crap and keep coming back? Carlton remains the province of the wealthy, essentially detached from the supporters who are left hoping that the billionaires can get it right. The source of mirth should be obvious - a silver spoon club, forced to shovel shit!

While virtually bankrupt, Richmond managed to somehow increase its membership every year under Wallace. A minor dip the year Hardwick arrived, then a meteoric climb to the present day. Carlton is seen to be underperforming in this area, which is why our membership guy is now your CEO.

Good to see you've retained your optimism, though I do wonder if you could stand another 10-15 years of rubbish...

PS I can't recall the free ticket thing.

I believe the AFL mentioned the PP is likely to be for the second round (if the Blues applies for one).
Similar to what the Lions received. Although it’s surprising given where Melbourne were ‘in the dark days’ that the AFL saw fit to take control of Melbourne and bring in a CEO and Coach (which they were satisfied with), yet didn’t give the demons a PP. their record was not dissimilar to that of the blues today.

Anyway, AFL can not afford for clubs to be rubbish for a long period of time. Particularly a club like Carlton who just don’t have the member support any longer.

What do you mean by the last bit of this sentence ? They have 55k signed and paid up members. I dont understand what you mean ....

I think that perhaps you don’t actually understand what it means to infer something.

Here’s what you wrote ...

Direct quote. No inference. You made a claim and can’t back it up. I mean, this type of rubbish is a good example of the low standards I’ve been referring to.
Actually I do, you’re inferring that “telling people they’re idiots” can only be done in the most literal sense. If I’d meant it in the most literal way I would’ve put quotes around the word. This post is actually a perfect summation of your posting here you’ve come in at 3am to post that someone has “low standards” (as if you are the basis for intellectual standards and decisions)

Either way you’ve shown you’re just defensive because it’s a discussion on carlton. It’s a fan boi tantrum.

It’s strange that someone who advocates for court room levels of evidence and burden of proof has many posts on the scandals and rumours board though...

Holy shit, had to look this up. FMD that's funny.
It’s actually part of the fabric of the club. The supporters had to put in to keep the club alive.

They had no white knights like Mathieson or Pratt to go cup in hand to. But then again, those guys having such a strong input into a club has shown how detrimental that can be.

And this is the very reason why Carlton is where it is today. Tom Elliot, Jeanne Pratt and Bruce Matheson have been running the club for years.

Pretty sure Alan Bond was hanging around Richmond around these times. Much in the same mould as Doc eddleston for the swans - didn't mind flaunting their so called wealth around footy clubs until the well dried up and off they went.
The 3 you mention regarding Carlton - they dont have influence that people might believe. Mathieson hasnt poured any money into the club for years . Jeanne might donate as part of dick pratt's will , and Tom elliot - well I dont know enough about him to make comment

Yeah Alan Bond was a joke of a president like Richmond were in the 80s. Unfortunately he didn’t give us any of his money.

Those that don’t believe Matheson still pulls the strings at Carlton are deluded.

LoGuidice is a paper tiger and the CEO Cain Liddle was appointed as Bruce and Jeanne went cold on Lethlean. Sos is tight with Bruce so he’s going nowhere.

Tom Elliot continues to agitate through his position in the media and there are rumblings he wants to challenge for the presidency. I’m not sure he has the support of Jeanne and Bruce but if he doesLoGuidice is on a hiding to nothing.

The Blues were once a powerhouse club. The should have at least 75k members. I think the saints even have 50k. Game griefs are probably a better indicator anyway

Yeah ,but , Carlton are like top 4 in relation to attendances in the league . Given that they are shit, it's all the more impressive actually. The support is there.

And if you saw carlton's list 3 years ago and the schmucks that they released, you wouldn't blame them for bottoming out.
Alternatively, they could have retained those players to a degree and hovered anywhere between 6th down to 18th but what's the point in that ?
Clearly they are following Melbournes blueprint for sustained success and have now hit rock bottom, but at least they have a core group of players between ages 18-22 who should help them improve on ladder position. Not all seems hopeless
A massive problem however is that you still have a dozen or so 'schmucks' on your list that you need to release this year, many of which have been drafted in the Bolton/SOS era.

When does the cycle end?

Mate, I am friends with 3 Carlton premiership players. Their sons (5-8 yrs of age), no longer go for Carlton.

I have 2 mates who have owned restaurants in Carlton for years who don’t take their kids to Carlton games because they want to change teams and they are hoping that the blues improve enough to start taking them again. Life long Carlton families and supporters who are devastated.

This is a real issue for the blues. Not sure if you have young kids down as Auskick, but I’m shocked how few Carlton jumpers are out there.

In terms of attendances? Well one of our Pie posters attends every Carlton game because it gives him so much enjoyment to see the Blues get smashed each week. He has only been disappointed once this year. The blues playing on the MCG has been his ‘happy place’.

Well I counted around 14 still to go so will be another few years I'm guessing. Every team has a bunch of duds, yes , even the reigning premiers unfortunate as it is, it will be more about which mature aged recruits they bring in. We want no more mullets or o'sheas. If they are thinking about this 23-26 demographic age group and come up with more rejects, the should change this strategy and go down the youth path.

My little fella 5 years old goes to auskick. Amazingly, there are more carlton jumpers running around than any other . All have a 9 or 30 on their backs . This is down in Macleod. Heartland for collingwood territory. Strange indeed

Sad ,sad, sad individual right there .

Not that that little anecdote is remotely true (and god forbid if it is) but this cooked unit wants to spend 3 hours a week - of an average lifespan of 78 years - watching a team they don't support lose?

Good grief that's embarrassing. Surely they're not far off being slung into an institution.

What a pitiful type of person. Does he also enjoy pulling wings off flies? I'd be ashamed to be associated with someone who gets his joy from other's suffering, not boasting about it

Since the rules were changed, just one club has received one. It's not a type of assistance to be proud of. I'd be horrified if my club were trying to "achieve" one. Was this part of Silvagni's "reset" plan?

Carlton applied for a priority pick in September 2015. It was rejected. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but the AFL should have given Carlton one at that time.

Pretty sure he did contribute something. Would've given us plenty more if we'd supported his plan to move the club to Brisbane. That motion was defeated and he didn't last long enough to preside over a single game.

If another Elliot touches the club, I’m switching to Gold Coast.

To be honest , I'd be more embarrassed about rattling tins up punt road , than asking for draft assistance.

Jeez mate, how far back do you want to go? Of course rattling tins in 1990 was embarrassing, bloody humiliating in fact, and there was always that possibility that we wouldn't be able to stump up enough dough to stay afloat. A sliding door or two and it could possibly have been the Brisbane Tigers, not the Brisbane Lions.

But fiscal desperation and catastrophic list management are two very different issues, particularly in this day and age of billion dollar TV rights and corporate sponsorship.

Yeah nah. MLG might be low profile but he's calling the shots, even if the string pulling theorems are more enjoyable for the tin foil hatters. Mathieson was outspoken about our previous recruiters and rightfully so as the evidence shows . Haven't heard much from him. I heard Jenkins was the one who wasn't down with Lethlean, though Liddle has started pretty well anyway.
