Analysis The Awkward Captaincy Problem

This’ll be an unpopular opinion but Steele doesn’t jump out to me as a captain. If he had leadership skills surely he would have been in the leadership group and if he is to be captain he’ll need some media training going off his AA acceptance speech. Didn’t look comfortable being interviewed compared imo

He's definitely a quiet humble type. I haven't met Dougal Howard but have met Wilkie. I reckon those two could be a good duo with Steele as VC. Otherwise Hill does all the publicity stuff already, make him a captain.

Then again Lenny captained us and he was a quiet humble type too. Lenny the humble consistent warrior with the rock star name, Jack Steele the humble consistent warrior with the porn star name.

He hasn't don't a lot of media yet in his career. The more he does, the better he will get.

If you look how far Billings has come in the past 2-3 years at interviews, there is hope for anyone. JB use to look nauseous every time and his eyes would dart everywhere. But now he is one of our best on camera interviews. It just takes practice.

Yeah that’s a good call.

Marshall to me wouldn’t be the worst option.

Hard to know looking in from the outside though, happy to trust those in charge and if that’s Steele I’ll bsck him in!

I can see Marshall being in the leadership group next year.

But he has such a happy, light hearted personality that I don't know if would be demanding enough to be captain. But that would probably match up well as VC to a Steele or Howard who both seem to have a more serious nature.

Not often I disagree with you Gringo but....
Making a bloke who wets his pants when he hears footsteps approaching as captain?
Were you extracting the urine perhaps?

Nah, just typing without thinking as usual.

Captain - Steele

Leadership Group - Membrey, Howard, Hannebery, Hill

Think Steele has picked himself to be captain going forward and Membrey seems to be next in line purely reading from how it sounds at the club. Howard in there for his leadership down back, Hannebery and Hill for the high standards they set in training and professionalism. Geary still an unofficial leader. That's how I look at it for next year.

The timing kind of sucks , we have a few , but its just a tad early to make the call.

Gresham, Steele, Marshall, Coffield , Clark. Jones, Wilkie, Howard.
With a group like this i wouldn't be opposed to a GT style rotating captaincy.

We could start next year with Membrey.

Gresham: Too soon to tell.
Steele : Possibly good. Question Marks?
Marshall/Coffield/Clark/Howard Too soon.
Jones: Been with the club 5 minutes.

Membrey as a long term captain concerns me, as he strikes me as a one position player, who could be down the order if his form drops.

Steele isn't ready IMO, probably 2 seasons too early. I feel the same way about Marshall.

Hanners would be my go to, but i'm worried if he will be fit

Ross would be my next go to, but i'm worried his form will not warrant it

he's one from left field, what about Wilkie?

Howard.

he might be a bit too competitive and too temperamental, like beej

which is where i think Geary really succeeds as captain i think he gets the balance right especially for the younger guys

although maybe Captaincy would help him adjust to that. maybe he needs time in the leadership group first? maybe all these candidates do?

possibly. So maybe a co captaincy with Membrey who is already in the leadership group?

It's time for change though, and 25 is a perfectly good age for Steele with a young team behind him.

They've already kept Gears on for support, plus there's Doogs, Membury, Hanners.

No point pissfarting around any longer.
If Jack says he wants it, then he should have it..

I honestly think we need to do what we didn’ with Rooey either this season or next start a transition to the next captain not saying it has to be Steele either needs a another season at this trajectory before I would make him skipper

Interesting that the Saints wheelchair team got SM messages from two St Kilda people leading up to their finals campaign: coach Brett Ratten and random player Jack Steele.

Why? I get he’s a fantastic player who had a great season but I think it’s a bit rich to say it has to be him
