Firstly, Adam has to go! He's way past it!

After watch the GF agian and he's just plain terrible! Had this opinion last year but WCE will never win a flag with this guy in the best 21!

Push the guy into coaching, if he's well liked at the club.

Mr.Waters...I love the guy...put his body on the line and save many goals with his courgous marking. But his kicking, really hurts us.

Sam Butler isn't a defender, he has poise with the ball.

Last week, we looked so good with Wilson, Brennan, Stevenson with their run and disposal. Their defensive work was just as good, if not better than Selwood and Butler.

Going forward for 2012 we can't have Selwood, Waters and Butler in the one defence! Woosha must stick only for experience and hardness (Waters).

Back 6.

Scofield Glass Waters
Brennan EMac Stevenson.

HB: Schofield Emac Stevenson [Hurn loose man in defense - pushes up into the midfield/HF]

Agree Phil, but Butler has been great defensively. Gets some times punches in.

IMO Waters should be our 'everywhere' guy. Be a sweeper in to chop off balls in the backline, going to the forward line to add hardness and defensive pressure, then having stints in the midfield to just crash packs and slam players.

Edit: I forgot Hurn..

OMG, how could I forget Hurn.

I like to see Waters moved forward. With the loss of Niko.

Back 6:

Brennan Glass Butler
Schofield Emac Hurn

Forward 6:

Waters Lynch Hill
Shuey JK Darling

My opinion on our best backline is:

Stevenson Glass Butler
Schofield Emac Hurn

I would also have Smith on the bench (note I have not seen him play this year but he was impressive last year so am willing to give him the benefit of doubt.)

Watters I would play across half forward line or forward pocket - the old Daniel Chick role

Adam Selwood is working P/T for the club in Recruitment Administraton ,..... I think his time is at hand , last season anyway , and if he doesn't recruit Joel he should be sacked .

I am struggling to understand your logic. First you go to great lengths to give reasons why Butler is not a defender and he should not be played as one and then the next backline team you post you have him included and Stevenson excluded.

It seems to me that you have not really thought this through very well.

nah see he has got you on a technicality there. Selwood was the 22 player chosen for that match so the "Eagles cant win a premiership with Selwood in the 21" still stands :D

Jaymine Graham out, Wirrapanda in would have been the last change. Selwood was, at some point, best 21

Was thinking about this earlier today and thought about making a thread. It is a interesting point.

I dont see how you can have a backline that contains ASelwood, Waters & McGinnity. Throw in Priddis from the middle and we have a small collection of very ordinary to crap kicks. Cause I was thinking that you can hide 1 or 2 in a good team ie Luke Ball but really how many crap kicks do Collingwood, Hawthorn & Geelong have in their teams. I think we would have more than them combined.

Just a thought. Really liked last year having both Hurn and Butler there for the ability to guide through the zone with well waited / accurate passes. Also as mentioned before by other as well that I really enjoyed the NAB this year seeing Stevenson, Brennan & Wilson with some quick ball movement and penetration with the kicks.

Now you've done it. Let the Ploddus debate begin! Selwood and Ploddus are just terrible, terrible players holding back our young players for years.

I really don't see why Brennan couldn't play Selwoods role? He looked to be able to play as tight and tackle just as hard as Selwood. Also it's not like he's 18, he's played wafl for a few years so the experience gap isn't as huge as putting a kid back there.

Woosh dropped Lynch eary in 2009/10 didn't he? Just short of 150 straight games? Can't see why Selwood would be treated any different.

My theory is you need one of the following:

McGinnity or Waters
Butler or Selwood
Smith or Brennan or Stevenson

To complete a backline around Glass, Schofield, Hurn and EMac, with one starting on the bench. The first group gives you the toughness, tackling pressure and intensity, the second (supposedly) gives a bit of poise on the ball and the ability to take a small/medium forward and the third is to support Hurn and Schofield in rebound.

It's a balancing act at the moment, and I feel like we've just got it a little bit wrong.

Stevenson would be ahead of Brennan in the pecking order IMO.

I actually think Adam Selwood is on the verge of being dropped tbh. Getting older and there are a few young ones pushing for first 22.

We know Woosha does tend to play favourites so I think for the time being he is a lock for Round 1.

This is my preferred backline:

HB: Stevenson Glass Hurn
FB: Waters Emac Schofield

With Smith, Butler, McGinnity and Brennan rotating through.
