Some of the Marx Bros movies are classic, but I actually prefer Charlie Chaplin, & some of the Keystone Kops material.

Laurel & Hardy had their moments, but they didn't know when to quit, lapsing into pale self-parody

Ted Healy & his Three Stooges were innovators, they split in 1934, with the Three Stooges probably being my favourite.

Abbott & Costello, probably made the most, and spent the most money.

Martin & Lewis probably had the most acrimonious split, which speaks volumes.

Naturally all the above were inspirations for:-

Monty Python, & the various spin-offs of its members
Not the Nine O'Clock News, & the various spin-offs of its members
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
Till Death Us Do Part, and all the various Pommy comedies to come

Chaplin was also a huge inspiration for Benny Hill whose earlier work before the smut took over in the late '70's was considered top draw. Chaplin in return stated before he died that Hill was indeed his favourite comedian of the modern era at that time.

Truth be told, Benny Hill blatantly ripped off just about everything he ever did from other comedians, including some of his most well known characters such as "Chow Mein".

Seinfeld probably my number one, the Simpsons has too many seroius episodes to be an out and out comedy - and the first series of blackadder really lets down the other 3 which were a cut above.

nah too many marge/lisa 'serious' episodes. i've gotta say all the recent stuff, say 2000 onwards has been really bad and unfunny too. ever since they got celebrities to appear as themselves rather than actual characters (ie steve martin as the garbage comissioner)
