If the girl said to the boyfriend that she tried to have sex with another bloke but didn't because he knocked her back, is the outcome of the relationship any different to whether she actually did it?

There is a subtle difference. In both cases the intention is to cheat, but if you are rejected, that's it - but if not, then as you escalate toward the act it becomes more real and you are presented with more opportunities to wake up to what it is you are actually about to do.
